Claims
- 1. In a device for filtering and dispensing fluid, the combination of: first pumping means; accumulator/second pumping means in fluid communication with said first pumping means; and filter means between said first and second pumping means, whereby said first pumping means pumps said fluid through said filtering means to said accumulator/second pumping means, in which said fluid may be collected and/or dispensed at a rate and/or intervals independently of the rate and/or intervals that said fluid is pumped through said filtering means.
- 2. The device in claim 1 wherein said first pumping means and said accumulator/second pumping means are both relatively non-contaminating and suitable for handling high-purity fluids.
- 3. The device in claim 1 comprising a computer controller to activate and/or monitor said first pumping means and said accumulator/second pumping means.
- 4. The device in claim 1 wherein said first pumping means and/or said accumulator/second pumping means include diaphragm-type pumps.
- 5. The device of claim 1, including valve means to direct the fluid selectively to said first pumping means or to said filter means.
- 6. The device of claim 1 in which said first pumping means includes first incremental pump advancement means, and said accumulator/second pumping means includes second incremental pump advancement means, whereby said first and second incremental pump advancement means may operate their respective pumps at finite, controllable rates and intervals independently of each other.
- 7. The device of claim 6 in which said first pumping means and said accumulator/second pumping means include diaphragm-type pumps, and in which said first and second incremental pump advancement means comprise hydraulic stepper assemblies incorporating relatively incompressible fluid, said fluid being in fluid communication with the respective said diaphragm-type pumps and causing movement of said diaphragm-type pumps in response to movement of their respective incremental pump advancement means.
- 8. The device of claim 7 including first pressure sensing means to monitor the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in said first diaphragm-type pump.
- 9. The device of claim 8 including second pressure sensing means to monitor the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in said second diaphragm-type pump.
- 10. In a device for filtering and dispensing fluid, the combination of: first pumping means; accumulator/second pumping means in fluid communication with said first pumping means; and filter means between said first and second pumping means, whereby said first pumping means pumps said fluid through said filtering means to said accumulator/second pumping means, in which said fluid may be collected and/or dispensed at a rate and/or intervals independently of the rate and/or intervals that said fluid is pumped through said filtering means; wherein said first pumping means and said accumulator/second pumping means are both relatively non-contaminating and suitable for handling high-purity fluids; wherein said first pumping means and/or said accumulator/second pumping means include diaphragm-type pumps; said device further including valve means to direct the fluid selectively to said first pumping means or to said filter means; said first pumping means including first incremental pump advancement means, and said accumulator/second pumping means including second incremental pump advancement means, whereby said first and second incremental pump advancement means may operate their respective pumps at finite, controllable rates and intervals independently of each other; said first pumping means and said accumulator/second pumping means further including diaphragm-type pumps, and said first and second incremental pump advancement means further comprising hydraulic stepper assemblies incorporating relatively incompressible fluid, said fluid being in fluid communication with the respective said Diaphragm-type pumps and causing movement of said diaphragm-type pumps in response to movement of their respective incremental pump advancement means; said device further including pressure sensing means to monitor the pressure of the hydraulic fluid in said first diaphragm-type pump; said device further comprising a computer controller to activate and/or monitor said first pumping means, said accumulator/second pumping means, and/or said valve means, said computer controller being further adapted to receive input from said pressure sensing means and cause said activation in response thereto.
- 11. A method for filtering and dispensing high purity fluid, comprising the steps of: pumping said fluid through filtering means by first pumping means to second pumping means; accumulating said fluid in second pumping means; and dispensing said fluid by operating said second pumping means.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said accumulating step is achieved by operating said second pumping means on an intake stroke at the same rate at which said first pumping means is pumping said fluid through said filter so that the fluid which has been filtered is accumulated in said second pumping means without being dispensed from said second pumping means.
- 13. The method of claim 11 wherein said pumping, accumulating and dispensing steps are achieved and controlled in said first pumping means by first: motor means, and in said second pumping means by second motor means, each motor means providing finite, controllable, and independent operation of its respective pumping means.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein said accumulating step includes operating said second pumping means to draw said filtered fluid at a rate slightly greater than the rate at which said filtered fluid is being pumped by said first pumping means, such that there is a slight drawback of said fluid from a dispensing means of said second pumping means.
- 15. The method of claim 11 additionally comprising the step of controlling the operation of said first and Second pumping means such that said fluid may be filtered at a relatively slow rate and dispensed from said second pumping means at a rate and intervals independently of the rate and intervals at which said fluid is filtered.
- 16. In a device for filtering and dispensing fluid, the combination of: first pumping means; accumulator/second pumping means in fluid communication with said first pumping means; and filter means between said first and second pumping means, whereby said first pumping means pumps said fluid through said filtering means to said accumulator/second pumping means, and further in which said accumulator/second pumping means can be operated at a rate and/or intervals independently of the rate and/or intervals of said first pumping means.
- 17. In a device for filtering and dispensing high-purity viscous fluid, the combination of: a first diaphragm-type pump; filtering means connected to receive said fluid from said first diaphragm-type pump; and a second diaphragm-type pump connected to receive said fluid from said filtering means, in which said first diaphragm-type pump may be operated at a rate and/or intervals independently of the rate and/or intervals of operation of said second diaphragm-type pump.
- 18. In a device for filtering and dispensing fluid, the combination of: pumping means; filtering means connected to said pumping means; and a hydraulic stepper assembly for actuating said pumping means.
- 19. In a device for dispensing fluid, the combination of: first pumping means; and second pumping means connected to said first pumping means, whereby said first pumping means draws said fluid from a reservoir and pumps said fluid to said second pumping means and said fluid is dispensed from said second pumping means.
- 20. The device of claim 19 in which said first and second pumping means include diaphragm-type pumps.
- 21. The device of claim 20 in which said diaphragm-type pumps are actuated by hydraulic stepper assemblies.
- 22. In a device for filtering and dispensing fluid: a reservoir; valve means connected to said reservoir; first pumping means connected to said valve means; filter means connected to said valve means; and second pumping means connected to said filter means in which said fluid is drawn from said reservoir by said first pumping means and through said valve means into said first pumping means, and is then pumped from said first pumping means through said valve means and through said filter means to said second pumping means, where said fluid can be alternately or simultaneously accumulated and dispensed.
- 23. In a pump, the combination of: a pumping chamber; a diaphragm dividing said chamber into an actuating compartment and a dispensing compartment; a stepper assembly capable of causing finite, repeatable displacements or movements; and a relatively incompressible fluid filling said actuating compartment, said fluid further being in closed fluid communication with said stepper assembly such that said movement of said stepper assembly results in a corresponding movement of said diaphragm.
- 24. The device of claim 23 in which said stepper assembly includes electronic stepper motor means, a cylinder, a piston having an end, said piston being disposed in said cylinder, said piston further being coupled to said motor means so that movement of said motor means causes reciprocation of said piston in said cylinder, said cylinder and said end of said piston forming a chamber providing said closed fluid communication between said incompressible fluid and said stepper assembly.
- 25. The device of claim 24, further including filter means in fluid communication with said dispensing compartment such that a second fluid in said dispensing compartment may be filtered in conjunction with the dispense of said second fluid from said dispensing compartment.
- 26. In a pump, the combination of: electronic stepper motor means; a cylinder; a piston reciprocally slidably disposed in said cylinder and having an end; linkage means between said motor means and said piston to translate output from said motor means into linear movement of said piston in said cylinder; a pumping compartment in fluid communication with said end of said piston, said compartment having at least one opening; a diaphragm across said opening; a relatively incompressible fluid filling said compartment and providing said fluid communication with said end of said piston so that said linear movement of said piston displaces said incompressible fluid, thereby displacing said diaphragm.
