Claims
- 1. An ejector for ejecting a fluid from a syringe that includes a cavity, a retractable structure extending within the cavity, a piston located within the cavity and an outlet in fluid communication with the cavity, the ejector comprising:
a) a receiver operatively configured to receive the syringe; b) a first mechanism engaging the retractable structure when the syringe is engaged with said receiver and operatively configured to move the retractable in a direction away from the outlet; and c) a second mechanism operatively configured to move the piston in a direction toward the outlet when the syringe is engaged with said receiver so as to eject the fluid via the outlet from a portion of the cavity located between the piston and the outlet.
- 2. An ejector according to claim 1, wherein the syringe further includes a transfer passageway spaced from the outlet, said first mechanism operatively configured to move the piston in a direction away from the outlet by a distance that allows the transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with said portion of the cavity.
- 3. An ejector according to claim 1, wherein the retractable structure is a plunger and said first mechanism is operatively configured for engaging the plunger so as to allow the plunger to be retracted.
- 4. An ejector according to claim 2, wherein said first mechanism includes a shuttle engaging the plunger when the syringe is engaged with said receiver.
- 5. An ejector according to claim 1, wherein the retractable structure is a valve actuator and said first mechanism is operatively configured for engaging the valve actuator so as to allow the valve actuator to be retracted.
- 6. An ejector according to claim 1, wherein the second mechanism includes a plunger for engaging the piston when the syringe is engaged with said receiver so as to eject the fluid from said portion of the cavity via the outlet.
- 7. An ejector according to claim 1, further comprising a fluid delivery system for delivering the fluid from a reservoir to the transfer passageway.
- 8. A system, comprising:
a) a syringe that includes:
i) a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; ii) a plunger slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis; iii) an outlet in fluid communication with said chamber; and iv) a transfer passageway spaced from said outlet and said longitudinal central axis of said chamber; and b) an ejector in mechanical communication with said syringe and including a first mechanism engaging said plunger and operatively configured to move said plunger in a direction away from said outlet by a distance that allows said transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with a portion of said chamber located between said outlet and said plunger.
- 9. A system according to claim 8, further comprising a second mechanism engaging said plunger and configured to eject the fluid from said chamber via said outlet.
- 10. A system according to claim 8, further comprising a fluid delivery system for delivering a fluid from a reservoir to said transfer passageway.
- 11. A method of ejecting a fluid from a syringe that includes a chamber having a longitudinal central axis, a piston slidable within the chamber along the longitudinal central axis, an outlet in fluid communication with the chamber and a retractable structure extending into the chamber, the method comprising in the following order the steps of:
a) engaging the syringe with an ejector having a first mechanism operatively configured to move the retractable structure in a direction away from the outlet so that the retractable structure is engaged with said first mechanism; b) actuating said first mechanism so as to retract the retractable structure; and c) providing the fluid to a portion of the chamber located between the piston and the outlet.
- 12. A method according to claim 11, wherein the retractable structure comprises a plunger coupled to the piston, step b comprising actuating said first mechanism so as to retract the plunger.
- 13. A method according to claim 11, wherein the syringe further includes a transfer passageway and step b comprises actuating said first mechanism so as to move the piston by a distance that allows the transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with said portion of the chamber.
- 14. A method according to claim 11, wherein the retractable structure comprises a valve actuator and step b comprises actuating said first mechanism so as to retract the valve actuator.
- 15. A method according to claim 11, further comprising the step of actuating a second mechanism that moves the piston toward the outlet so as to eject fluid from said portion of the chamber.
- 16. A fill station for filling a plurality of syringes, wherein each syringe includes a chamber having a longitudinal central axis, a piston slidable within the chamber along the longitudinal central axis, an outlet in fluid communication with the chamber and a transfer passageway spaced from the outlet and the longitudinal central axis, the ejector comprising:
a) at least one receiver operatively configured to engage one of the plurality of syringes; b) a mechanism, coupled to the piston when said one of the plurality of syringes is received in said receiver, operatively configured to move the piston in a direction away from the outlet by a distance that allows the transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with a portion of the chamber located between the outlet and the piston; and c) a fluid delivery system in fluid communication with the transfer passageway when said one of the plurality of syringes is received in said receiver.
- 17. A fill station according to claim 16, comprising a plurality of receivers, said mechanism operatively configured to move a plurality of pistons in concert with one another when more than one of said plurality of receivers is engaging a corresponding syringe.
- 18. A fill station according to claim 16, further comprising a reservoir in fluid communication with said fluid delivery system.
- 19. A fill station according to claim 18, wherein said reservoir contains a medical fluid.
- 20. A fill station according to claim 19, wherein said medical fluid is a vaccine diluent.
- 21. A system, comprising:
a) at least one syringe that includes:
i) a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; ii) a piston slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis; iii) an outlet in fluid communication with said chamber; and iv) a transfer passageway spaced from said outlet and said longitudinal central axis of said chamber; and b) a fill station that includes:
i) at least one receiver receiving said at least one syringe; ii) a mechanism, coupled to said piston and operatively configured to move said piston in a direction away from said outlet by a distance that allows said transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with a portion of said chamber located between said outlet and said piston; and iii) a fluid delivery system in fluid communication with said transfer passageway.
- 22. A system according to claim 21, comprising a plurality of syringes having a plurality of pistons, wherein said fill station includes a plurality of receivers and said mechanism is operatively configured to move said plurality of pistons in unison with one another when said plurality of syringes is engaged with corresponding respective ones of said plurality of receivers.
- 23. A system according to claim 21, further comprising a reservoir in fluid communication with said fluid delivery system.
- 24. A system according to claim 23, wherein said reservoir contains a medical fluid.
- 25. A system according to claim 24, wherein said medical fluid is a vaccine diluent.
- 26. A method of providing a fluid to a syringe that includes a chamber having a longitudinal central axis, a piston slidable within the chamber along the longitudinal central axis, an outlet in fluid communication with the chamber and a transfer passageway spaced from the outlet and the longitudinal central axis, the method comprising in the following order the steps of:
a) engaging the syringe with a fill station that includes a reservoir containing the fluid, said fill station further including a mechanism operatively configured to move said piston in a direction away from the outlet; b) actuating said mechanism so as to retract the piston by a distance that allows the transfer passageway to fluidly communicate with a portion of the chamber located between the outlet and the piston; and c) providing the fluid from said reservoir to said portion of the chamber via the transfer passageway.
- 27. A method according to claim 26, wherein step c) comprises providing a medical fluid from said reservoir to said portion of the chamber.
- 28. A method according to claim 27, wherein step c) comprises providing a vaccine diluent from said reservoir to said portion of the chamber.
- 29. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; b) a piston slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis; c) an outlet in fluid communication with said chamber and extending through said housing; d) a transfer passageway extending through said housing and spaced from said outlet and said longitudinal central axis; and e) a transfer passageway seal removably sealing said transfer passageway, said transfer passageway seal removable by moving said piston.
- 30. A syringe according to claim 29, wherein said transfer passageway seal is a slidable seal slidably engaged with said housing so as be removable by sliding.
- 31. A syringe according to claim 30, further comprising a plunger attached to said piston, wherein said slidable seal comprises an aperture receiving said plunger therethrough.
- 32. A device, comprising:
a) a reservoir that includes a vent; b) a syringe comprising:
i) a housing defining a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; ii) a piston slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis; and iii) a transfer passageway extending through said housing and fluidly communicating a fluid from said reservoir to said chamber; and c) a vent seal for sealing said vent of said reservoir, said vent seal being coupled to said piston so as to be movable with said piston.
- 33. A device according to claim 32, further comprising a valve in fluid communication with said transfer passageway for selectively sealing said reservoir from said chamber.
- 34. A device according to claim 33, wherein said valve comprises a seal removably sealing said transfer passageway.
- 35. A device according to claim 32, wherein said reservoir further comprises a vent tube located within said reservoir and fluidly communicating with said reservoir and said vent.
- 36. A device, comprising:
a) a reservoir that includes a vent; b) a syringe comprising:
i) a housing defining a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; ii) a piston slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis; iii) an outlet for communicating a fluid out of said chamber; and iv) a transfer passageway extending through said housing and fluidly communicating the fluid from said reservoir to said chamber; and c) a first seal having a first portion removably sealing said vent and a second portion removably sealing said outlet.
- 37. A device according to claim 36, wherein said first seal is a flexible seal.
- 38. A device according to claim 36, further comprising a valve in fluid communication with said transfer passageway for selectively sealing said reservoir from said chamber.
- 39. A device according to claim 38, wherein said valve comprises a second seal removably sealing said transfer passageway.
- 40. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining a chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; b) a piston slidable within said chamber along said first longitudinal central axis; c) a reservoir having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis, said reservoir including a vent; and d) a valve fluidly coupled between said chamber and said reservoir for communicating a fluid from said reservoir to said chamber.
- 41. A syringe according to claim 40, further comprising an outlet in said housing fluidly communicating with said chamber.
- 42. A syringe according to claim 41, wherein said outlet is a jet nozzle.
- 43. A syringe according to claim 40, wherein said valve comprises at least one passageway extending between said reservoir and said chamber and a seal sealing said at least one passageway.
- 44. A syringe according to claim 43, wherein said passageways are substantially radially outward from said reservoir relative to said second longitudinal central axis.
- 45. A syringe according to claim 43, wherein said seal is a slidable seal slidably engaged with said housing so as be removable by sliding.
- 46. A syringe according to claim 45, further comprising a plunger attached to said piston, wherein said slidable seal comprises an aperture receiving said plunger therethrough.
- 47. A syringe according to claim 46, wherein said seal is removable by action of said plunger.
- 48. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining a chamber having a longitudinal central axis; and b) a plunger slidable within said chamber along said longitudinal central axis, said plunger comprising:
i) a reservoir that includes a first vent; and ii) a valve fluidly coupled between said chamber and said reservoir for communicating a fluid from said reservoir to said chamber.
- 49. A syringe according to claim 48, further comprising an outlet in said housing fluidly communicating with said chamber.
- 50. A syringe according to claim 49, wherein said plunger further comprises a second vent in fluid communication with said chamber when said valve is sealed.
- 51. A syringe according to claim 48, wherein said valve is a rotating seal actuated by rotating said plunger about said first longitudinal axis.
- 52. A syringe according to claim 48, wherein said valve comprises a piston sealingly engaging said housing, said piston having at least one first opening therein for passing a fluid from said reservoir to said chamber when said valve is open.
- 53. A syringe according to claim 52, wherein said reservoir further comprises at least one second opening movable into and out of registration with said at least one opening in said piston so as to, respectively, open and close said valve.
- 54. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining:
i) a chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis, said reservoir including a vent; b) a plunger slidable within said chamber along said first longitudinal central axis; and c) a valve fluidly coupled between said chamber and said reservoir for communicating a fluid from said reservoir to said chamber, said valve including:
i) at least one passageway extending between said reservoir and said chamber; and ii) a movable seal removably sealing said at least one passageway, said movable seal movable by moving said plunger.
- 55. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining:
i) a chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir and having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; b) a valve located between said chamber and said reservoir; c) a piston spaced from said valve along said second longitudinal axis; and d) an actuator coupled to said valve so that said valve is opened by moving said actuator and at least a portion of said valve is moved generally along said second longitudinal central axis by said actuator when said actuator is moved.
- 56. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein the entirety of said valve is moved generally along said second longitudinal central axis by said actuator when said actuator is moved.
- 57. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said valve is a flapper valve when said actuator is moved.
- 58. A syringe according to claim 57, wherein said flapper valve comprises a flexible disc facing away from said piston when said actuator is moved.
- 59. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said valve is a stopper valve.
- 60. A syringe according to claim 59, wherein said stopper valve has a stopper that disengages from said stopper valve when said actuator is moved.
- 61. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said valve includes an expandable plug and a wedge when said actuator is moved.
- 62. A syringe according to claim 61, wherein both said expandable plug and said wedge are moved generally along said second longitudinal central axis by said actuator when said actuator is moved.
- 63. A syringe according to claim 61, wherein only said wedge are moved generally along said second longitudinal central axis by said actuator when said actuator is moved.
- 64. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said valve comprise a stationary member and a movable member that is moved by said actuator when said actuator is moved.
- 65. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said actuator comprises a slender elongate rod.
- 66. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said actuator comprises a laterally flexible member.
- 67. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein said actuator includes a stress concentrator at a desired location for causing actuator to break at the stress concentrator under certain conditions.
- 68. A syringe according to claim 55, wherein at least a portion of said actuator is readily removable.
- 69. A syringe according to claim 68, wherein when said at least a portion of said actuator is removed, any remaining portion of said actuator does not extend beyond said piston.
- 70. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining:
i) a ejection chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; b) a valve located between said ejection chamber and said reservoir; c) an outlet in fluid communication with said ejection chamber when said valve is closed; wherein said valve is a flapper valve having a flapper located proximate said outlet.
- 71. A syringe according to claim 70, wherein said flapper comprises a flexible disc.
- 72. A syringe according to claim 71, wherein said valve comprise a piston and said flexible disc is initially removable adhered to said piston.
- 73. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing having a cavity defining:
i) a ejection chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir and having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; b) a piston slidably engaged with said housing within said cavity; and c) a stopper valve located between said ejection chamber and said reservoir.
- 74. A syringe according to claim 73, wherein said stopper valve comprises a stopper located in said ejection chamber.
- 75. A syringe according to claim 74, wherein said stopper valve includes a socket receiving said stopper and said stopper disengages said socket when said valve is open so that said stopper is essentially free to move within said ejection chamber.
- 76. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining:
i) a ejection chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir and having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; b) a valve actuator; and c) a valve located between said ejection chamber and said reservoir, said valve including a temporarily stationary member and removable member initially sealing said valve, but removable from said temporarily stationary member by said valve actuator.
- 77. A syringe according to claim 76, wherein said removable member comprises a plug.
- 78. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing defining:
i) a ejection chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; and b) a valve located between said ejection chamber and said reservoir, said valve including a wedge and an expandable plug that includes a receiver for receiving said wedge so as to compress said expandable plug into sealing engagement with said housing.
- 79. A syringe according to claim 78, wherein said wedge includes a head and a neck and said expandable plug including an aperture receiving said neck therethrough.
- 80. A syringe according to claim 79, wherein said expandable plug includes a receiver receiving said head so as to retain said head therein when said valve is actuated.
- 81. A syringe, comprising:
a) a housing having a cavity defining:
i) a ejection chamber having a first longitudinal central axis; and ii) a reservoir having a second longitudinal central axis substantially collinear with said first longitudinal central axis; and b) a valve located between said ejection chamber and said reservoir, said valve including a piston slidably engaging said housing within said cavity, said piston including:
i) a first end; ii) a second end spaced from said first end; iii) a central region disposed between said first end and said second end; iv) a recess located in said central region; v) at least one passageway extending from said first end to said recess; and vi) a movable seal movable within said recess so as to seal and unseal said at least one passageway.
- 82. A syringe according to claim 81, wherein said recess comprises an annular recess.
- 83. A syringe according to claim 82, wherein said movable seal is an O-ring.
- 84. A syringe according to claim 81, wherein said first side of said piston faces said ejection chamber.
