Claims
- 1. A vehicle, comprising:
(a) one or more frame structures to which a large percentage of other components of said vehicle are engaged either directly or indirectly in such a manner that said frame structures function to maintain proper location of said other components of said vehicle relative to one another; (b) a suspension system that is engaged to said one or more frame structures and which supports said frame structures above the ground and provides said vehicle with a relatively low resistance to movement along the ground; (c) one or more body structures that are mounted to said frame structures of said vehicle; (d) one or more components that define a fluid flow inlet through which fluid may flow; (e) a fluid inlet grille that is mounted to said vehicle and positioned within said fluid flow inlet; (f) wherein said fluid inlet grille comprises a plurality of grille bars each of which extends along its longitudinal axis across at least some portion of said fluid flow inlet; (g) wherein one or more of said grille bars of said fluid inlet grille is a novel aerodynamic grille bar that is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a maximum width that is greater than a trailing edge width of said transverse cross-section; (h) wherein one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars is of a composite construction and comprises two or more constituent grille bars that are disposed adjacent one another with their axes parallel to one another and with ends of their outer walls disposed adjacent one another; (i) wherein an outer wall of each of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of a composite construction is constituted by said outer walls of said constituent grille bars that it comprises; and (j) wherein in a majority of transverse cross-section of each of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that are of composite construction any gaps between outer said ends of said outer walls of said constituent grille bars are less than 20% of a chord length of said novel aerodynamic grille bar.
- 2. The vehicle of claim 1, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction comprises an upstream constituent-grille-bar that forms an upstream side of said novel aerodynamic grille bar and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that is disposed adjacent said upstream constituent-grille-bar on a downstream side thereof and that forms a downstream side of said novel aerodynamic grille bar.
- 3. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) one or more of said constituent grille bars has an open-shape construction.
- 4. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein:
(a) said fluid inlet grille comprises a plurality of said novel grille bars that are of composite construction and that comprise an upstream constituent-grille-bar and a downstream constituent-grille-bar; and (b) said fluid inlet grille comprises a downstream fluid inlet grille that comprises a frame structure to which a plurality of said downstream constituent-grille-bars are attached.
- 5. The vehicle of claim 4, wherein:
(a) all of said downstream constituent-grille-bars of said downstream fluid inlet grille have an open-shape construction.
- 6. The vehicle of claim 5, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a chord length that is greater than three times a maximum width of said transverse cross-section.
- 7. The vehicle of claim 6, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a trailing edge width of zero.
- 8. The vehicle of claim 7, wherein:
(a) said one or more components that define said fluid flow inlet, within which said fluid inlet grille is disposed, comprise an engine enclosure body structure.
- 9. The vehicle of claim 8, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 10. The vehicle of claim 9, wherein:
(a) said downstream fluid inlet grille comprises one or more perforated sheets that extends between and is integrally formed with adjacent downstream constituent grille bars.
- 11. The vehicle of claim 10, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 12. The vehicle of claim 11, wherein:
(a) each of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 13. The vehicle of claim 5, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 14. The vehicle of claim 13, wherein:
(a) each of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 15. The vehicle of claim 5, wherein:
(a) said downstream fluid inlet grille comprises one or more perforated sheets that extends between and is integrally formed with adjacent downstream constituent grille bars.
- 16. The vehicle of claim 4, wherein:
(a) said downstream fluid inlet grille comprises one or more perforated sheets that extends between and is integrally formed with adjacent downstream constituent grille bars.
- 17. The vehicle of claim 4, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 18. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 19. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein:
(a) one or more of said downstream constituent-grille-bars has an open-shape construction.
- 20. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a chord length that is greater than three times a maximum width of said transverse cross-section.
- 21. The vehicle of claim 20, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a trailing edge width of zero.
- 22. The vehicle of claim 3, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a trailing edge width of zero.
- 23. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) said one or more components that define said fluid flow inlet, within which said fluid inlet grille is disposed, comprise an engine enclosure body structure.
- 24. The vehicle of claim 23, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 25. The vehicle of claim 24, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its cross-section perpendicular to its longitudinal axis has a trailing edge width of zero.
- 26. The vehicle of claim 25, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its transverse cross-section has a chord length that is greater than three times a maximum width of said transverse cross-section.
- 27. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that has a composite construction is constructed in such a manner that along a majority of its length its cross-section perpendicular to its longitudinal axis has a trailing edge width of zero.
- 28. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) one or more of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 29. The vehicle of claim 28, wherein:
(a) each of said novel aerodynamic grille bars that is of composite construction includes an upstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of a chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction and also comprises a downstream constituent-grille-bar that has an outer wall with its ends disposed upon opposite sides of said chord line of said novel aerodynamic grille bar that is of composite construction.
- 30. The vehicle of claim 29, wherein:
(a) one or more of said downstream constituent-grille-bars has an open-shape construction.
- 31. The vehicle of claim 28, wherein:
(a) one or more of said downstream constituent-grille-bars has an open-shape construction.
- 32. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 33. The vehicle of claim 2, wherein:
(a) one or more of said downstream constituent-grille-bars has an open-shape construction.
- 34. A fluid inlet grille, comprising:
(a) a plurality of grille bars; and (b) a perforated sheet that is integrally formed with and extends between an adjacent pair of said grille bars.
- 35. The fluid inlet grille of claim 34, wherein:
(a) a space between each adjacent pair of grille bars of said fluid inlet grille is spanned by a perforated sheet that is integrally formed with and engaged to each grille bar of said adjacent pair of grille bars.
- 36. The fluid inlet grille of claim 35, wherein:
(a) said fluid inlet grille has an open-shape construction.
- 37. The fluid inlet grille of claim 34, wherein:
(a) said fluid inlet grille has an open-shape construction.
- 38. A vehicle, comprising:
(a) one or more frame structures to which a large percentage of other components of said vehicle are engaged either directly or indirectly in such a manner that said frame structures function to maintain proper location of said other components of said vehicle relative to one another; (b) a suspension system that is engaged to said one or more frame structures and which supports said frame structures above the ground and provides said vehicle with a relatively low resistance to movement along the ground; (c) one or more body structures that are mounted to said frame structures of said vehicle; (d) one or more components that define a fluid flow inlet through which fluid may flow; (e) a fluid inlet grille that is mounted to said vehicle and positioned within said fluid flow inlet; (f) wherein said fluid inlet grille comprises a plurality of grille bars; and (g) wherein said fluid inlet grille comprises a perforated sheet that is integrally formed with and extends between an adjacent pair of said grille bars.
- 39. The fluid inlet grille of claim 38, wherein:
(a) a space between each adjacent pair of grille bars of said fluid inlet grille is spanned by a perforated sheet that is integrally formed with and engaged to each grille bar of said adjacent pair of grille bars.
- 40. The fluid inlet grille of claim 39, wherein:
(a) said fluid inlet grille has an open-shape construction.
- 41. The vehicle of claim 40, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 42. The vehicle of claim 41, wherein:
(a) said one or more components that define said fluid flow inlet, within which said fluid inlet grille is disposed, comprise an engine enclosure body structure.
- 43. The vehicle of claim 39, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 44. The vehicle of claim 43, wherein:
(a) said one or more components that define said fluid flow inlet, within which said fluid inlet grille is disposed, comprise an engine enclosure body structure.
- 45. The vehicle of claim 38, wherein:
(a) one or more heat exchangers is mounted to said vehicle adjacent to said fluid flow inlet and upon a downstream side of said fluid inlet grille mounted within said fluid flow inlet.
- 46. The vehicle of claim 45, wherein:
(a) said one or more components that define said fluid flow inlet, within which said fluid inlet grille is disposed, comprise an engine enclosure body structure.
- 47. The fluid inlet grille of claim 46, wherein:
(a) said fluid inlet grille has an open-shape construction.
- 48. The fluid inlet grille of claim 38, wherein:
(b) said fluid inlet grille has an open-shape construction.
