Claims
- 1. A high purity silicon fluid bed reactor comprising: a fluidized bed reactor having walls defining a reaction chamber;
- means for heating said reaction chamber to decompose a silicon-containing gas entering said chamber;
- seed particle entry means for introducing silicon seed particles into said reaction chamber;
- means for introducing a silicon-containing gas into said reaction chamber to decompose said gas and form silicon product by growing silicon on said silicon seed particles;
- means for exhausting decomposition gas and any unreacted silicon-containing gas from said reaction chamber; and
- means for dispensing silicon product from said reactor, said dispensing means fluidly communicating with said reaction chamber which comprises:
- an angle of repose valve for collecting and transferring said silicon product from said reaction chamber, and gastight valve means communicating with said angle of repose to receive granular product discharged from said reaction chamber and thereby dispense said silicon product form said reactor, said angle or repose valve comprising:
- (a) a housing having a top inlet and a bottom outlet;
- (b) an inlet tube sealingly disposed in said top inlet for receiving a flow of high purity solids from said protective environment, said inlet tube having a non-contaminating interior for contacting said solids;
- (c) a series of plates, each plate having an aperture, said plates being vertically disposed to form a serpentine flow path through the apertures of said plates, and a horizontal blocking surface within said serpentine flow path; and
- (d) motive gas means for moving the solids collected on said horizontal blocking surface to discharge said solids through the portion of said serpeentine flow path below said blocking surface.
- 2. A high purity silicon fluid bed reactor comprising: a fluidized bed reactor having walls defining a reaction chamber;
- means for heating said reaction chamber to decompose a silicon-containing gas entering said chamber;
- seed particle entry means for introducing silicon seed particles into said reaction chamber;
- means for introducing a silicon-containing gas into said reaction chamber to decompose said gas and form silicon product by growing silicon on said silicon seed particles;
- means for exhausting decomposition gas and any unreacted silicon-containing gas from said reaction chamber; and
- means for dispensing silicon product from said reactor, said dispensing jmeans fluidly communicating with said reaction chamber which comprises:
- an angle of repose valve for collecting and transferring said silicon product from said reaction chamber, and gastight valve means communicating with said angle of repose to receive granular product discharged from said reaction chamber and thereby dispense said silicon product from said reactor, said angle or repose valve comprising:
- (a) a housing having a top inlet and a bottom outlet;
- (b) an inlet tube sealingly disposed in said top inlet for receiving a flow or high purity solids from said protective environment, said inlet tube having a non-contaminating interior for contacting said solids;
- (c) an elbow tube comprising a horizontal blocking surface and a blow path above and below said blocking surface; and
- (d) motive gas means for moving the solids collected on said horizontal blocking surface to discharge said solids from said elbow tube through said flow path below said blocking surface.
- 3. A high purity silicon fluid bed reactor comprising: a fluidized bed reactor having walls defining a reaction chamber;
- means for heating said reaction chamber to decompose a silicon-containing gas entering said chamber;
- seed particle entry means for introducing silicon seed particles into said reaction chamber;
- means for introducing a silicon-containing gas into said reaction chamber to decompose said gas and form silicon product by growing silicon on said silicon seed particles;
- means for exhausting decomposition gas and any unreacted silicon-containing gas from said reaction chamber; and
- means for dispensing silicon product from said reactor, said dispensing means fluidly communicating with said reaction chamber which comprises:
- an angle of repose valve for collecting and transferring said silicon product from said reaction chamber, and gastight valve means communicating with said angle of repose to receive granular product discharged from said reaction chamber and thereby dispense said silicon product from said reactor, said angle or repose valve comprising:
- (a) a housing having a top inlet and a bottom outlet;
- (b) an inlet tube sealingly disposed in said top inlet for receiving a flow of high purity solids from said protective environment, said inlet tube having a non-contaminating interior for contacting said solids;
- (c) a flapper style valve below said inlet tube having a horizontal position for accumulating solids and a vertical, solids discharge position; and
- (d) means for rotating said flapper style valve to said vertical position to discharge said solids from said flapper style valve.
- 4. A high purity silicon fluid bed reactor comprising: a fluidized bed reactor having walls defining a reaction chamber;
- means for heating said reaction chamber to decompose a siloicon-containing gas entering said chamber;
- seed particle entry means for introducing silicon seed particles into said reaction chamber;
- means for introducing a silicon-containing gas into said reaction chamber to decompose said gas and form silicon product by growing silicon on said silicon seed particles;
- means for exhausting decomposition gas and any unreacted silicon-containing gas from said reaction chamber; and
- means for dispensing silicon product from said reactor, said dispensing means fluidly communicating with said reaction chamber which comprises:
- an angle of repose valve for collecting and transferring said silicon product from said reaction chamber, and gastight valve means communicating with said angle of repose to receive granular product discharged from said reaction chamber and thereby dispense said silicon product from said reactor, said angle to repose valve comprising:
- (a) a housing having a top inlet and a bottom outlet;
- (b) an inlet tube sealingly disposed in said top inlet for receiving a flow of high purity solids from said protective environment, said inlet tube having a non-contaminating interior for contacting said solids;
- (c) a cylinder having solids inlet means, and a bottom, inside, horizontal surface for accumulating solid thereon; and
- (d) means for rotating said cylinder to discharge said solids from said horizontal surface.
