Claims
- 1. A patient support system comprising:
- (a) means on which to receive a patient in a supine position, said means including a side support means; and
- (b) a side rail assembly associated with said side support means, said side rail assembly comprising a rail arrangement including elongated spread apart rails having crossing rails secured therebetween, said elongated spaced apart rails defining a locking pin receiving opening therein and laterally extending transverse sections at a lower end of same, mounting brackets secured to said side support means, said brackets including a locking pin channel and a generally U shaped lower end in which said transverse sections are receivable, said channel having an end plate defining an opening therethrough, and a locking pin received in said channel under spring tension, a forward end of said pin having a bevel thereat and normally residing outside said channel, and an opposite end of said pin having means thereon for engaging said end plate to hold said pin in an inactive position, whereby said rail arrangement is pivotal about said U shape lower end of said mounting bracket to a raised position where said elongated rails engage said beveled forward ends of said pins and bias said pins against said spring tension partially through said channel until said pin matches with said receiving opening on said rail and moves within same to lock said rail assembly in the raised position, and whereby when said pins are withdrawn from said pin receiving openings, said rail arrangement may be lowered.
- 2. A support system as defined in claim 1 wherein said end plate opening is non circular in shape and an end of said pin receivable therein has a like shape, whereby said pin may be pulled through said opening until said non-circular portion is removed, rotated to misalign same with said opening and released, whereby said non-circular portion of said pin engages said end plate and holds said opposite beveled end of said pin in a non-locking position.
- 3. A support system as defined in claim 1 wherein said pin defines a notch therein adjacent an end opposite said beveled end, said notch being lockingly engaged with said end plate around said opening to lock said pin in a non-locking position.
- 4. A support system as defined in claim 1 wherein said system is a fluidizable support system.
- 5. A patient support system comprising:
- (a) means on which to receive a patient in a supine position, said means including a generally vertically extending side support means; and
- (b) a side rail assembly associated with said side support means, said side rail assembly comprising a rail arrangement including elongated spaced-apart rails having crossing rails secured therebetween, said elongated spaced apart rails defining a locking pin receiving opening therein and laterally extending transverse sections at a lower end of same, mounting brackets non-removably attached to said side support means, said brackets including a locking pin channel and a generally U-shaped lower end in which said transverse sections are receivable, said channel having an end plate defining an end plate opening therethrough, and a locking pin received in said channel under spring tension, a forward end of said pin having a bevel thereat and normally residing outside said channel, and an opposite end of said pin having means thereon for engaging said end plate to hold said pin in an inactive position, whereby said rail arrangement is pivotal about said U-shaped lower end of said mounting bracket to a raised position where said elongated rails engage said beveled forward ends of said pins and bias said pins against said spring tension partially through said channel until said pin matches with said pin receiving opening on said rail and moves within same to lock said rail assembly in the raised position, and whereby when said pins are withdrawn from said pin receiving openings, said rail arrangement may be lowered;
- wherein said end plate opening is non-circular in shape and an end of said pin receivable therein has a like shape, whereby said pin may be pulled through said end plate opening until said non-circular portion is removed, rotated to misalign same with said end plate opening and released, whereby said non-circular portion of said pin engages said end plate and holds said opposite beveled end of said pin in non-locking position;
- wherein said pin defines a notch therein adjacent an end opposite said beveled end, said notch being lockingly engaged with said end plate around said end plate opening to lock said pin in a non-locking position.
