Claims
- 1. A catalyst composition produced by combining an organoaluminoxane cocatalyst and a polymeric metallocene catalyst, said polymeric metallocene catalyst being prepared by
- (1) forming a fluorenyl-containing polymer by
- (a) polymerizing a 2-vinyl fluorene compound or
- (b) polymerizing a fluorene compound by reacting it with chloromethylmethylether in the presence of zinc dichloride or aluminum trichloride;
- (2) reacting the fluorenyl-containing polymer with an alkali metal compound; and
- (3) reacting the product of step (2) with a transition metal-containing compound.
- 2. A catalyst composition according to claim 1 wherein the fluorenyl containing polymer is produced by polymerizing a 2-vinylfluorene compound.
- 3. A catalyst composition according to claim 2 wherein the 2-vinylfluorene compound is copolymerized with styrene.
- 4. A catalyst composition according to claim 3 wherein the 2-vinylfluorene compound employed is 2-vinylfluorene.
- 5. A catalyst composition according to claim 4 wherein zirconium tetrachloride is used as the transition metal-containing compound.
- 6. A catalyst composition according to claim 4 wherein the transition metal-containing compound that is employed is cyclopentadienyl zirconium trichloride.
- 7. A catalyst composition according to claim 3 wherein the 2-vinylfluorene compound is a vinylfluorene compound having a cyclodienyl group attached to the fluorene by a bridging group.
- 8. A catalyst composition according to claim 2 wherein the fluorenyl-containing polymer is prepared by the homopolymerization of a 2-vinylfluorene compound.
- 9. A catalyst composition according to claim 8 wherein the transition metal-containing compound employed in step (3) is selected from the group consisting of fluorenyl zirconium dichloride, indenyl zirconium trichloride, and cyclopentadienyl zirconium dichloride.
- 10. A catalyst composition according to claim 8 wherein the transition metal-containing compound used in step (3) is cyclopentadienyl zirconium trichloride.
- 11. A catalyst composition according to claim 8 wherein the 2-vinylfluorene compound is a vinylfluorene compound having a cyclodienyl group attached to the fluorene by a bridging group.
- 12. A catalyst composition according to claim 11 wherein the fluorenyl-containing polymer is produced by the homopolymerization of 1-(9-(2-vinyl) fluorenyl)-2-(9-fluorenyl) ethane.
- 13. A catalyst composition according to claim 12 wherein the transition metal-containing compound employed in step (3) is zirconium tetrachloride.
- 14. A catalyst composition according to claim 1 wherein said organoaluminoxane cocatalyst has repeating units of the formula ##STR2## wherein each R' is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1-8 carbon atoms, and x is 2 to 50.
- 15. A catalyst system according to claim wherein the organoaluminoxane cocatalyst is methylaluminoxane.
