Claims
- 1. A radioluminescent body composed of a polymer together with a chelate of a transition or lanthanide or actinide metal ion, which body is transparent or translucent, wherein the body is radioactively labelled with tritium and has the property of emitting light or infrared radiation by virtue of internally generated ionizing radiation resulting from radioactive decay of the tritium.
- 2. The body as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said chelate is present in the form of a complex with a reagent selected from the group consisting Of phosphine oxides of the formula ##STR24## where R is aromatic or heterocyclic, and ##STR25##
- 3. The body as claimed in claim 1, wherein the chelate is a transition, lanthanide or actinide group metal ion selected from the group consisting of Tb, Eu, Sm, Dy, U and UO.sub.2.
- 4. The body as claimed in claim 1, wherein the chelate comprises a chelating moiety of the formula ##STR26## where R' is aromatic or heterocyclic or aliphatic hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon and R" is aromatic or heterocyclic or aliphatic hydrocarbon or fluorocarbon or hydrogen.
- 5. The body as claimed in claim 4, wherein R' is t-butyl and R" is hydrogen.
- 6. The body as claimed in claim 3, wherein the transition or lanthanide or actinide group metal ion is Tb.sup.3+.

- 10. The compound as claimed in claim 9, having the formula ##STR27##
- 11. A fluorescent body composed of a polymer together with a chelate of a transition or lanthanide or actinide metal ion, which body is transparent or translucent and has the property of emitting light or infrared radiation when subjected to ultraviolet or ionizing radiation, wherein there is present a siloxane which improves the stability and light output.
- 12. The body as claimed in claim 11, wherein said chelate is present in the form of a complex with a reagent selected from the group consisting of phosphine oxides of the formula ##STR28## and imido-reactants of the formula ##STR29## where R is aromatic or heterocyclic, ##STR30## Q is phosphorus or arsenic, and Z is QR.sub.3 or oligophosphoranyl.
- 13. A fluorescent body composed of a polymer together with a chelate of a transition or lanthanide or actinide metal ion, which body is transparent or translucent and has the property of emitting light or infrared radiation when subjected to ultraviolet or ionizing radiation, wherein there is present a free radical scavenger which reduces polymer degradation.
