Claims
- 1. A composition having formula (I):

The composition of claim 1 in which any of the saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group, the aralkyl group, the cycloalkyl group, the aryl group, the heteroaryl group, or the saturated and partially saturated heterocyclic group is substituted with one or more similar or different substituents selected from the group consisting of R7, OR7, SR7, NR8COR7, NR8CSR7, NR8CO2R7, NR8C(O)SR7, NR8CS2R7, O2CR7, S2CR7, SCOR7, OCSR7, SO2R7, OSO2R7, NR8SO2R7, CN, NO2, N3, a halogen, an alkyl, an aryl, and an aralkyl, and in which R8 is hydrogen or an alkyl.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 in which R1 represents a sugar moiety, R2 represents hydrogen and R3 represents a methyl group.
- 4. A composition having formula (II):

The composition of claim 4 in which R2 represents hydrogen or an acetyl group, R3 represents a methyl group, R4 represents hydrogen, fluorine, an allyloxy group, an alkynylalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group wherein the amino group bears a protecting group, a methoxy group, or a hydroxyl group, R5 represents hydrogen, and R6 represents hydrogen.

The composition of claim 4 in which R2 represents hydrogen, R3 represents a methyl group; R4 represents hydrogen, fluorine, an allyloxy group, an alkynylalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group wherein the amino group bears a protecting group, a methoxy group, or a hydroxyl group, R5 represents hydrogen, and R6 represents a phosphoryl group, a diphosphoryl group, or a triphosphoryl group.
- 7. The composition of claim 4 in which R2 represents hydrogen or an acetyl group, R3 represents a methyl group, R4 represents hydrogen, a fluorine, an allyloxy group, an alkynylalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group, an aminoalkoxy group wherein the amino group bears a protecting group, a methoxy group, a tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy group, a triisopropylsilyloxymethoxy group, or a 1-(2-fluorophenyl)-4-methoxypiperidin-4-yloxy group, R5 represents a 2-cyanoethoxy-N,N-diisopropylaminophosphinyl group or a methoxy-N,N-diisopropylaminophosphinyl group, and R6 represents a dimethoxytrityl group.
- 8. The composition of claim 4 in which R2 represents hydrogen or acetyl group, R3 represents a methyl group, R4 represents a bis-(2-acetoxyethoxy)methoxy group, R5 represents a 2-cyanoethoxy-N,N-diisopropylaminophosphinyl group or a methoxy-N,N-diisopropylaminophosphinyl group, and R6 represents an alkoxybis(trimethylsilyloxy)silyloxy group wherein the alkoxy group is cyclooctyloxy, cyclododecyloxy, or diphenylmethoxy.
- 9. A probe comprising the nucleotide sequence at least one comprising a nitrogenous base selected from the group consisting of adenine, guanine, thymine, uracil, cytosine, hypoxanthine, xanthine and a nitrogenous bases having a composition of formula (I):
- 10. The probe of claim 9 in which the probe comprises between about 10 and about 100 nucleosides.
- 11. The probe of claim 9 in which the sugar moiety is selected from the group consisting of 2′-deoxyribosyl and ribosyl.
- 12. The probe of claim 9 in which R2 is hydrogen and R3 is a methyl group.
- 13. The probe of claim 9 in which the sugar moiety is linked to a triphosphoryl group.
- 14. The probe of claim 9 in which the at least one nucleoside phosphate is linked to additional nucleosides through a phosphodiester, phosphotriester or phosphorothioate linkage.
- 15. The probe of claim 9 in which the at least one nucleoside phosphate is capable of hybridizing to at least one naturally occurring nitrogenous base.
- 16. The probe of claim 15 in which the naturally occurring nitrogenous base is guanine.
- 17. A probe comprising at least one nucleoside phosphate comprising a nucleoside having a composition of formula (II):
- 18. The probe of claim 17 in which R2 is hydrogen, R3 is a methyl group, R4 is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group, R5 is hydrogen, and R6 is a phosphoryl, diphosphoryl or triphosphoryl group.
- 19. The probe of claim 17 in which the nucleoside phosphate is capable of hybridizing to at least one naturally occurring nitrogenous base.
- 20. The probe of claim 17 in which the naturally occurring nitrogenous base is guanine.
