Claims
- 1. A method for determining the pH of a medium comprising:
- a) contacting the medium with a fluorescent pH indicator compound selected from the group consisting of compounds having the structure ##STR4## b) exposing the fluorescent compound to approximately 544 nm wavelength light to excite the fluorescent compound;
- c) measuring the intensity of fluorescence emitted by the excited fluorescent compound, and;
- d) determining the pH of the medium from the intensity of fluorescence.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the medium is contacted with a compound having the structure: ##STR5##
- 3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the medium is contacted with a compound having the structure: ##STR6##
- 4. The method according to claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein the pH of an intracellular medium is determined.
- 5. The method according to claim 4 wherein intracellular pH is determined by flow cytometry.
