Claims
- 1. A process for the production of substantially fluoride-free phosphoric acid and potassium dihydrogen phosphate which comprises:
- (a) reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid to produce gypsum and phosphoric acid with evolution of fluoride gas;
- (b) removing the gypsum solids;
- (c) passing the phosphoric acid to a defluorination stage for treatment by the addition of silicon dioxide and K.sub.2 O,
- (1) the potassium ion of said K.sub.2 O being provided by addition of KH.sub.2 PO.sub.4, said potassium ion being provided in a sufficient amount to precipitate the fluorides remaining in said phosphoric acid and in a sufficient excess amount that the phosphoric acid recovered from the reaction will contain about 0.5 to 1.0 weight percent potassium ion as K.sub.2 O; and
- (2) said silicon dioxide being provided in an amount sufficient to precipitate the fluorides remaining in said phosphoric acid;
- (d) passing the resulting mixture to a separation stage wherein precipitated potassium silicofluoride is removed from the system;
- (e) passing the resulting phosphoric acid to a separation stage and removing at least a portion from the system as feed grade phosphoric acid;
- (f) passing the remainder of said resulting phosphoric acid to a reactor for reaction with phosphate rock and a member selected from the group consisting of potassium sulfate, potassium bisulfate, and mixtures thereof, to produce a mixture comprising KH.sub.2 PO.sub.4, phosphoric acid, gypsum and precipitated K.sub.2 SiF.sub.6 ;
- (g) removing the gypsum and K.sub.2 SiF.sub.6 solids from the system to provide a solution of phosphoric acid and KH.sub.2 PO.sub.4 ;
- (h) removing at least a portion of the KH.sub.2 PO.sub.4 and phosphoric acid from the system; and
- (i) recycling the remaining solution to said defluorination stage to provide said K.sub.2 O.
- 2. The process of claim 1 further comprising the steps of reacting the K.sub.2 SiF.sub.6 removed from the system in step (d) with a sufficient amount of aqueous calcium hydroxide to precipitate the fluorides as calcium fluoride and to produce KOH and precipitated silicon dioxide; and removing the precipitated silicon dioxide from the system to recover a solution of KOH and CaF.sub.2.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein about 1/3 to 2/3 of the phosphoric acid is removed as feed grade phosphoric acid product in step (e).
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the phosphoric acid not removed from the system is reacted with phosphate rock and KHSO.sub.4 at a temperature of 40.degree.-60.degree. C.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein only a portion of the gypsum-K.sub.2 SiF.sub.6 solids removed from the system in step (g) is recycled to the defluorination stage to provide SiO.sub.2 values thereto.
