Claims
- 1. A process to prepare a cogel comprising:
- (a) dissolving a fluorine-containing compound with a base;
- (b) mixing the solution of (a) with a water-soluble aluminum compound to form a cogel;
- wherein said fluorine-containing compound is present in an amount sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine into the cogel, based on the weight of the cogel;
- (c) washing the cogel of (b) in alcohol; and
- (d) drying and calcining the washed product to form AlF.sub.3.X(Al.sub.2 O.sub.3).
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the amount of said fluoriding agent is sufficient to incorporate from about 10 to about 50 weight percent AlF.sub.3 into the cogel, based on the weight of the AlF.sub.3.X(Al.sub.2 O.sub.3).
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein said fluorine-containing compound is ammonium bifluoride (NH.sub.4 HF.sub.2).
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein said base is ammonium hydroxide.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein said water-soluble aluminum compound is Al(NO.sub.3).sub.3.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 further comprising and incorporating a chromium compound into said cogel.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 further comprising the step of heating the chromium impregnated fluorided alumina at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C., for a time within a range of about 1 to about 10 hours, in an oxidizing atmosphere.
- 8. A process according to claim 6 wherein the chromium impregnated cogel comprises chromium within a range of about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent chromium, based on the weight of the dried fluorided alumina.
- 9. A composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 1.
- 10. A catalyst composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 7.
- 11. A process to prepare a cogel comprising:
- a) dissolving ammonium bifluoride (NH.sub.4 HF.sub.2) with ammonium hydroxide;
- b) mixing the ammonium bifluoride/ammonium hydroxide solution with aluminum nitrate to form a cogel;
- wherein said fluorine-containing compound is present in an amount sufficient to incorporate from about 6 to about 12 weight percent fluorine into the cogel, based on the weight of the cogel;
- c) washing the cogel of the (b) in alcohol; and
- d) drying and calcining the washed product to form AlF.sub.3.X (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3).
- 12. A process according to claim 11 further comprising incorporating a chromium compound into said cogel.
- 13. A process according to claim 12 wherein the chromium impregnated cogel comprises chromium within a range of about 0.1 to about 10 weight percent chromium, based on the weight of the dried fluorided alumina.
- 14. A process according to claim 12 further comprising the step of heating the chromium impregnated fluorided alumina at a temperature within a range of about 300.degree. to about 700.degree. C., for a time within a range of about 1 to about 10 hours, in an oxidizing atmosphere.
- 15. A composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 11.
- 16. A catalyst system composition prepared in accordance with the process of claim 14.
