Claims
- 1. An extruded filament comprising a fiber forming thermoplastic polymer having dispersed therein from about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of polymer of an additive which improves the repellency of the filament to low surfae tension fluids, said additive being selected from the group consisting of
- 1) a compound of formula A ##STR15## wherein R.sub.1 is F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m or F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5) (CH.sub.2)p wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons and
- R.sub.2 is a linear, branched, or cyclic alkylene or poly(oxyalkylene) hydrocarbon group having from about 2 to about 15 carbons;
- 2) a compound of formula B ##STR16## wherein R.sub.1 is as defined above for formula A, and
- R.sub.6 is a linear or branched alkyl having from about 4 to about 20 carbons;
- 3) a compound of formula C ##STR17## wherein R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m, F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --OC(O)--(CH.sub.2).sub.n, and F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5)(CH.sub.2).sub.p OC(O)(CH.sub.2).sub.n wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, and n is about 2 to about 12, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons;
- 4) a compound of formula D ##STR18## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- 5) a compound of formula E ##STR19## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- R.sub.4 is an alkyl or alkenyl group of from about 4 to about 20 carbons, and
- 6) mixtures of compounds A through E.
- 2. An extruded filament of claim 1 wherein, said filament has a fluorine content of from about 200 .mu.g/g to about 25,000 .mu.g/g.
- 3. A nonwoven fabric comprising at least one thermoplastic polymer having dispersed therein from about 0.1% to about 5% by weight of polymer of an additive which improves repellency of the fabric to low surface tension fluids, said additive being selected from the group consisting of
- 1) a compound of formula A ##STR20## wherein R.sub.1 is F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m or F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5) (CH.sub.2)p wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons and
- R.sub.2 is a linear, branched, or cyclic alkylene or poly(oxyalkylene) hydrocarbon group having from about 2 to about 15 carbons;
- 2) a compound of formula B ##STR21## wherein R.sub.1 is as defined above for formula A, and
- R.sub.6 is a linear or branched alkyl having from about 4 to about 20 carbons;
- 3) a compound of formula C ##STR22## wherein R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m, F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --OC(O)--(CH.sub.2).sub.n, and F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5) (CH.sub.2).sub.p OC(O) (CH.sub.2).sub.n wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, and n is about 2 to about 12, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons;
- 4) a compound of formula D ##STR23## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- 5) a compound of formula E ##STR24## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- R.sub.4 is an alkyl or alkenyl group of from about 4 to about 20 carbons, and
- 6) mixtures of compounds A through E.
- 4. A nonwoven fabric of claim 3 whereinsaid fabric has a fluorine content of from about 200 .mu.g/g to about 25,000 .mu.g/g.
- 5. A process for imparting repellency of low surface tension fluids to a thermoplastic polymer article of manufacture comprising forming a mixture prior to article formation of a polymer and an effective amount to impart said repellency of a compound selected from the group consisting of
- 1) a compound of formula A ##STR25## wherein R.sub.1 is F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m or F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5) (CH.sub.2)p wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons and
- R.sub.2 is a linear, branched, or cyclic alkylene or poly(oxyalkylene) hydrocarbon group having from about 2 to about 15 carbons;
- 2) a compound of formula B ##STR26## wherein R.sub.1 is as defined above for formula A, and
- R.sub.6 is a linear or branched alkyl having from about 4 to about 20 carbons;
- 3) a compound of formula C ##STR27## wherein R.sub.3 is selected from the group consisting of F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m, F(CF.sub.2).sub.x --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --OC(O)--(CH.sub.2).sub.n, and F(CF.sub.2).sub.x SO.sub.2 N(R.sub.5) (CH.sub.2).sub.p OC(O) (CH.sub.2).sub.n wherein x is from about 4 to about 20, m is from about 2 to about 6, and n is about 2 to about 12, p is from 1 to about 12, and R.sub.5 is an alkyl radical of from 1 to about 4 carbons;
- 4) a compound of formula D ##STR28## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- 5) a compound of formula E ##STR29## wherein R.sub.3 is as defined above for formula C; and
- R.sub.4 is an alkyl or alkenyl group of from about 4 to about 20 carbons, and
- 6) mixtures of compounds A through E; and melt extruding the mixture.
- 6. The process of claim 5 further comprising heating the formed article to a temperature of from about 25.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. after addition of the additive.
