Claims
- 1. A method for improving the compatibility with fluorocarbon elastomer seals of a lubricating oil formulation comprising dispersants containing basic nitrogen atoms, said method comprising either blending or mixing with said lubricating oil formulation an effective amount of a compound having the formula: ##STR13## wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently: (a) alkoxycarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (b) alkenyloxycarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (c) aryloxycarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms,
- (d) alkylcarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (e) alkenylcarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (f) arylcarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms,
- (g) arylalkyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms, or
- R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atom to which they are joined form:
- (h) a saturated or unsaturated carbocycle having five or six carbon atoms optionally substituted with one or two alkyl groups independently having one through thirty carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently:
- (i) sulfurized alkyl having three through thirty carbon atoms and at least one sulfur atom,
- (j) alkoxycarbonylalkyl wherein the alkoxy moiety has two through five carbon atoms and the alkyl moiety has one through ten carbon atoms;
- (k) arylalkyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (l) borated hydroxyalkyl having two through thirty carbon atoms,
- with the proviso that R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together contain sufficient carbon atoms to render the compound oil soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity.
- 2. The method according to claim 1 wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently alkoxycarbonyl having eight to thirty carbon atoms.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein the R substituent is identical to the R.sup.1 substituent.
- 4. The method according to claim 2 wherein the R.sup.2 substituent is identical to the R.sup.3 substituent.
- 5. The method according to claim 4 wherein the R substituent is identical to the R.sup.1 substituent.
- 6. The method according to claim 3 wherein R and R.sup.1 are each carbo-2-ethylhexoxy.
- 7. The method according to claim 6 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are borated hydroxyalkyls having two through thirty carbon atoms.
- 8. The method according to claim 7 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 share a common boron atom, forming a cyclic structure.
- 9. A lubricating oil formulation comprising dispersants containing basic nitrogen atoms that has had its compatibility with fluorocarbon elastomer seals improved by the method of claim 1.
- 10. A lubricating oil formulation comprising:
- (a) a major amount of a base oil of lubricating viscosity;
- (b) about from 1 to 20 weight % of at least one ashless dispersant;
- (c) from 0 to 20 weight % of at least one detergent;
- (d) about from 0.05 to 5 weight % of at least one zinc dithiophosphate;
- (e) from 0 to 10 weight % of at least one oxidation inhibitor;
- (f) from 0 to 1 weight % of at least one foam inhibitor;
- (g) from 0 to 20 weight % of at least one viscosity index improver; and
- (h) about from 0.05 to 5 weight % of at least one fluorocarbon elastomer compatibility improving agent of the formula ##STR14## wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently: (1) alkoxycarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (2) alkenyloxycarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (3) aryloxycarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms,
- (4) alkylcarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (5) alkenylcarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (6) arylcarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (7) arylalkyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- or R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atom to which they are joined form:
- (8) a saturated or unsaturated carbocycle having five or six carbon atoms optionally substituted with one or two alkyl groups independently having one through thirty carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently:
- (9) sulfurized alkyl having three through thirty carbon atoms and at least one sulfur atom,
- (10) alkoxycarbonylalkyl wherein the alkoxy moiety has two through five carbon atoms and the alkyl moiety has one through ten carbon atoms;
- (11) arylalkyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (12) borated hydroxyalkyl having two through thirty carbon atoms,
- with the proviso that R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together contain sufficient carbon atoms to render the compound oil soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity.
- 11. The lubricating oil composition according to claim 10 wherein R and R.sup.1 are each carbo-2-ethylhexoxy.
- 12. The lubricating oil composition according to claim 11 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are borated hydroxyalkyls having two through thirty carbon atoms.
- 13. The lubricating oil composition according to claim 12 wherein R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 share a common boron atom, forming a cyclic structure.
- 14. A concentrate comprising about from 10 weight % to 90 weight % of a compatible organic liquid diluent and about from 0.5 weight % to 30 weight % of a compound having the formula: ##STR15## wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently: (a) alkoxycarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (b) alkenyloxycarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (c) aryloxycarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms,
- (d) alkylcarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (e) alkenylcarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (f) arylcarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (g) arylalkyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- or R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atom to which they are joined form:
- (h) a saturated or unsaturated carbocycle having five or six carbon atoms optionally substituted with one or two alkyl groups independently having one through thirty carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently:
- (i) sulfurized alkyl having three through thirty carbon atoms and at least one sulfur atom,
- (j) alkoxycarbonylalkyl wherein the alkoxy moiety has two through five carbon atoms and the alkyl moiety has one through ten carbon atoms;
- (k) arylalkyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (l) borated hydroxyalkyl having two through thirty carbon atoms,
- with the proviso that R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together contain sufficient carbon atoms to render the compound oil soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity.
- 15. A method of producing a lubricating oil composition comprising blending the following components together:
- (a) a major amount of a base oil of lubricating viscosity;
- (b) about from 1 to 20 weight % of at least one ashless dispersant;
- (c) from 0 to 20 weight % of at least one detergent;
- (d) about from 0.05 to 5 weight % of at least one zinc dithiophosphate;
- (e) from 0 to 10 weight % of at least one oxidation inhibitor;
- (f) from 0 to 1 weight % of at least one foam inhibitor;
- (g) from 0 to 20 weight % of at least one viscosity index improver; and
- (h) about from 0.05 to 5 weight % of at least one fluorocarbon elastomer compatibility improving agent of the formula ##STR16## wherein R and R.sup.1 are independently: (1) alkoxycarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (2) alkenyloxycarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (3) aryloxycarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms,
- (4) alkylcarbonyl having four through thirty carbon atoms,
- (5) alkenylcarbonyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- (6) arylcarbonyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (7) arylalkyl having eight through thirty carbon atoms,
- or R and R.sup.1 together with the carbon atom to which they are joined form:
- (8) a saturated or unsaturated carbocycle having five or six carbon atoms optionally substituted with one or two alkyl groups independently having one through thirty carbon atoms, and
- R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently:
- (9) sulfurized alkyl having three through thirty carbon atoms and at least one sulfur atom,
- (10) alkoxycarbonylalkyl wherein the alkoxy moiety has two through five carbon atoms and the alkyl moiety has one through ten carbon atoms;
- (11) arylalkyl having seven through thirty carbon atoms, or
- (12) borated hydroxyalkyl having two through thirty carbon atoms,
- with the proviso that R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 together contain sufficient carbon atoms to render the compound oil soluble in an oil of lubricating viscosity.
- 16. A lubricating oil composition produced by the method according to claim 15.

No. 5,807,814, which is a continuation-in-part application of application Ser. No. 08/466,669, filed Jun. 5, 1995, which issued on Jun. 24, 1997 as U.S. Pat. No. 5,641,735, entitled "Bis(Thio)Ethylene Ashless Wear Inhibitors And Lubricating Oils And Greases." Both applications (U.S. Pat. Nos. 08/466,669 and 08/676,048) are hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes.
