Claims
- 1. An extruder die apparatus for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material, which die apparatus has an adjustable choke area, which apparatus comprises:
- a) an extruder housing having an axial bore for the extrusion of thermoplastic material therethrough from the inlet to the outlet of the bore;
- b) an inner die lip and an outer die lip about the bore and within the housing and each having a one and an other end, the one end of the inner and outer die lip having a concentric die gap for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material, the inner and outer die lips forming a thermoplastic material extrusion flow passageway from the one to the other end of the die;
- c) a peripheral choke gap within said thermoplastic material flow passageway with a restricted, cross-section, thermoplastic material flow area;
- d) a generally axially aligned concentric slot in the outer die lip having an open end generally adjacent to the choke gap;
- e) a choke ring means slidably movably positioned within said slot and having a selected clearance position within the slot and adapted to move between a non-restrictive flow position out of the choke gap and an axial flow restrictive position in the choke gap; and
- f) radially positioned choke ring adjusting means about the outer periphery of the choke ring means to provide for the axial movement of the choke ring means in said slot between the nonrestricted flow position and the restrictive flow position in selected peripheral sections to adjust the cross sectional area of the choke gap in each section.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring adjusting means comprises from about 4 to 8 choke ring adjustment means, generally uniformly spaced apart and positioned about the outer periphery of the choke ring means, to permit individual adjustment of each of the choke ring adjustment means.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring adjustment means comprises a plurality of radially adjustable, extending through the outer die lip and into contact with the choke ring means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein a portion of the thermoplastic flow passageway is downwardly angled to the die gap and the choke gap is positioned in the downwardly angled portion of the thermoplastic flow passageway.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 which choke ring means includes a plurality of peripheral, spaced apart castellation elements to permit the adjusting of the concentricity of the choke gap by flexing the choke ring means within the slot.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring adjusting means comprises a plurality of axially eccentric threaded bolt means in contact with the choke ring means to provide For the axial and flexing adjusting of the choke ring means.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the choke ring adjusting means provides for a flexing adjustment of the choke ring of up to about 0.030 of an inch within the slot, and the axial movement of up to about 0.25 inch of the choke ring means into the choke gap.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring means includes a curved face surface, which face surface extends into the choke gap to change the cross sectional area of the choke gap and faces the direction of extrusion of the thermoplastic material.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the choke ring means includes a plurality of generally uniformly spaced holes therein and the choke ring adjusting means comprises a plurality of axially eccentric threaded bolts which extend through each hole in the choke ring means for individual adjustment in each peripheral section of the choke ring means.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1 which includes a spider leg support means, and wherein the choke gap is arranged and constructed to provide for the removal of spider marks in the extruded thermoplastic material extruded through the choke gap.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1 which includes die gap adjusting means to permit the movement of the outer die lip relative to the inner die lip to adjust the concentric die gap.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 1 which includes a heat transfer oil ring about the outer die lip, and which oil ring includes a plurality of sectors with connecting heat transfer oil passageways therein in a heat-conductive relationship with the outer die lip for adjusting the temperature about the outer die lip by the individual adjustment of the flow of heat transfer oil through the passageways of each sector of the heat transfer oil ring.
- 13. A plastic extrusion system which comprises:
- a) a source of foamable thermoplastic material to be extruded, which source is on a thermoplastic flow communication with the inlet of the extruder of claim 12;
- b) temperature sensor means to determine the temperature of the heat transfer oil in the sector of the oil ring;
- c) heating-cooling means to heat or cool the heat transfer oil in the oil ring;
- d) pump means to circulate the heat transfer oil between the oil ring and the heat-cooler means; and
- e) control means to adjust the temperature of the heat-cooler means responsive to the sensor means, thereby adjusting the concentricity of the extruded plastic material.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring means comprises:
- a) a curved, axially aligned face surface section adapted to extend from the open end of the slot into the choke gap, which face surface faces the direction of the extrusion of the thermoplastic material;
- b) a plurality of generally uniformly spaced apart, peripheral, axial castellation elements within the slot;
- c) a plurality of generally uniform spaced apart oval holes in a plurality of the castellation elements to receive the choke ring adjusting means, and wherein the choke ring adjusting means comprises a plurality of axially eccentric each extending into a selected hole of the choke ring means, whereby on movement of the, axial adjusting of the choke ring means occurs in the selected section of the choke ring means.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 which includes a plurality of locking bolt means to lock in a selected position the bolt.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the choke ring adjusting means includes markings thereon to indicate the selected position of the choke ring adjusting means.
- 17. A plastic extrusion system which comprises a source of a foamable, thermoplastic material to be extruded which source is in thermoplastic flow communication with the extruder apparatus of claim 1, to permit the extrusion of a thermoplastic, foam material.
- 18. An extruder die apparatus for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material, which die apparatus has an adjustable choke area, which apparatus comprises:
- a) an extruder housing having an axial bore for the extrusion of thermoplastic material therethrough from the inlet to the outlet of the bore;
- b) an inner die lip and an outer die lip about the bore and within the housing and each having a one and the other end, the one end of the inner and outer die lip having a concentric die gap for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material, the inner and outer die lips forming a thermoplastic material extrusion flow passageway from the one to the other end of the die;
- c) a peripheral choke gap within said thermoplastic material flow passageway with a restricted, cross-section, thermoplastic material flow area;
- d) a generally axially aligned concentric slot in the outer die lip having an open end generally adjacent to the choke gap;
- e) a choke ring means slidably movably positioned within said slot and having a selected clearance position within the slot and having a curved, axially aligned face surface section adapted to extend from the open end of the slot into the choke gap and adapted to move between a non-restrictive position out of the choke gap and a restrictive position in the choke gap;
- f) the choke ring means having a plurality of generally uniformly spaced apart, peripheral, axial castellation elements within the slot;
- g) choke ring adjusting means about the outer periphery of the choke ring to include a plurality of spaced-apart axially eccentric bolts with bolt heads, the bolt heads having markings thereon to indicate the position of each bolt; and
- h) a plurality of generally uniform, spaced apart, oval holes in at least some of the castellation elements and choke ring adjusting means, and wherein said bolts of the choke ring adjusting means extend into a selected hole of the choke ring means, whereby on movement of each of the bolts, the choke ring means is axially adjusted and flexed in selected peripheral sections to permit the individual adjustment of the cross sectional area of the choke gap.
- 19. A thermoplastic extruder die apparatus for the extrusion of a thermoplastic material and having a choke gap and having an axial peripheral slot in the thermoplastic die apparatus for separate, peripheral adjustment of the choke gap of the extruder apparatus, in the extrusion of thermoplastic material, and which choke ring comprises:
- a) a curved, axially aligned face surface section adapted to extend from the open end of the slot into the choke gap, and to face the direction of extrusion of the thermoplastic material;
- b) a plurality of generally uniformly spaced apart, peripheral, axial castellation elements within the slot; and
- c) a plurality of generally uniform, spaced apart oval holes in at least some of the castellation elements to receive eccentric bolts of an axial choke ring adjusting means whereby on rotatory movement of each of the (bolts), axial adjusting of the choke ring means occurs in each section of the choke gap, and choke ring adjusting means to provide for the adjustment of the choke ring means in various sections of the choke gap.
