Claims
- 1. A wheeled carrier device, said device comprising:
a support frame defining a side elevational profile and an outer perimeter; a tow bar selectively mountable and removable from said support frame; said tow bar, in a first operative position, serves to connect said carrier device to a separate object providing rolling propulsion, to thereby couple the two together for movement, and in a second, stowed position is moved to substantially within the side elevational profile of the device support frame; a retention element affixed to said support frame which forms at least a partial retention base; and a plurality of foldable and selectively removable wall structures at least partly mounted to the support frame, which in a first, operative position are erected and in a second stowed position all said wall structures move and collapse substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame; at least two wheel support units affixed to said support frame; each of said wheel support units comprising at least one wheel having an outer periphery, defining a plane and having a central axis of rotation, and said wheel support units each being movable between a first, operative position wherein said wheels are erected to provide rolling support for said support frame and wherein the plane defined by each of said wheels extends substantially orthogonally to the side elevational profile of the support frame, and a second, stowed position, the plane defined by said wheels of said wheel support units being swept through an angle during movement of said wheel support units between said first and second positions such that the plane defined by each of said wheels in the second position of said wheel support units are substantially parallel with and substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame and said wheel's central axis of rotation is wholly within the support frame outer perimeter; manually releasable latching means, for positively latching said wheel support units in both of said first and second positions thereof.
- 2. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the said wall structures, in their second, stowed positions are secured against movement between at least part of the retention element and at least part of at least one wheel support unit in the second, stowed and latched position of said wheel support unit.
- 3. A device in accordance with claim 1 which includes at least one forward most wheel support unit mounted to an aspect of the support frame, which further includes:
at least one arm structure mounted to the axis of rotation of said forward most wheel; at least a portion of the at least one forward most wheel support unit further includes at least one brace; in a first, operative position said brace of said forward most wheel support unit at least partly abuts said support frame, and in a second, stowed position at least a part of said brace is detached from said abutment to said support frame.
- 4. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the at least one forward wheel is fixated against axial rotation in said first, operative, latched position and when unlatched from said position, said wheel is rotated along its axis of rotation and moved into a second, stowed position parallel with the support frame, substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame.
- 5. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein at least one part of said brace is at least partly mounted to the underside of the support frame in said first position, causing gravitational force from downwardly applied weight to the retention element affixed to the support frame to maintain said first, operative position of at least one forward most wheel support unit.
- 6. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the latch means which latches and releases the at least one forward most wheel support unit in both said first and second positions is one and the same means.
- 7. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the forward most wheel support unit latch means is recessed within the side elevational profile of the support frame.
- 8. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the forward most wheel support unit latch means is mounted to the forward most wheel support unit.
- 9. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one spring-biased latch mounted to the wheel support unit.
- 10. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one spring-biased latch mounted to the support frame.
- 11. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one sliding member mounted to the wheel support unit.
- 12. A device in accordance with claim 3 where said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one sliding member mounted to the support frame.
- 13. A device in accordance with claim 3 wherein said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one resiliently movable member mounted to the wheel support unit.
- 14. A device in accordance with claim 3 where said forward most wheel support unit latching means include at least one resiliently movable member mounted to the support frame.
- 15. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the retention element forms at least one seat that accommodates at least one child.
- 16. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the retention element forms at least one shaped section which in a first operative position protrudes toward the rolling surface, which shaped section accommodates the feet of at least one occupant, and in a second, stowed position said section collapses within the side elevational profile of the support frame.
- 17. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least two wheel support units are mounted on opposite sides of said support frame, the wheels of said two wheel support units, in the second, stowed, position of said two units, being positioned in at least partially overlapping relation and being disposed at least close to being in a plane parallel with the side elevational profile of the support frame, and substantially within the perimeter defined by said support frame.
- 18. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said retention element retains cargo.
- 19. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said retention element retains at least one person.
- 20. A device in accordance with claim 1 which includes at least one underside support movable between a first operative position where it provides support between the device and the rolling surface, and a second, stowed position wherein the said underside support stows substantially within the side elevational profile of the device frame.
- 21. A device in accordance with claim 1 which includes a push and pull handle secured to the carrier device, which is also movable from a first operative position, to a stowed position, substantially within the side elevational profile of the support frame.
- 22. A device in accordance with claim 1 which includes a handle which is substantially “U”-shaped and is at least partly contained within a cavity formed from the device frame profile.
- 23. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one of said wheel support units includes means for fixating a support axle for the corresponding wheel so as to prevent rotation of the corresponding wheel.
- 24. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein each said latching means, which provides latching in both the operative and stowed position, is one and the same means.
- 25. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein a said manually releasable latching means is integrated into each of said wheel support units.
- 26. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said manually releasable latching means is disposed within the side elevational profile of the carrier device.
- 27 A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein adjacent facing portions of said carrier device frame include facing cavities therein and at least two of said wheel support units include oppositely extending pivot elements which are received in said cavities and about which the associated wheel support member pivots.
- 28. A device in accordance with claim 27 wherein said pivot elements comprise opposite end portions of a pivot shaft and said wheel support unit includes at least one transversely extending opening at a pivot end thereof through which at least one said pivot shaft extends.
- 29. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one wheel includes an outer rim and a central hub and said hub including a transverse opening therein, and said wheel support unit for said at least one wheel including a wheel support unit, and an elongate wheel support element, said wheel support element including a transverse portion at said first end received in said opening in said hub and forming an axle about which said wheel rotates, and a further portion extending orthogonally to said transverse portion and being received in said support member, said further portion terminating in said second end, and said wheel support member including a cavity therein disposed adjacent to said second end, and said wheel support assembly further comprising a terminal fixing member affixed to said second end of said support element and received in said cavity, said fixing member being of size and shape relative to that of said cavity so as to prevent rotation thereof in said cavity, whereby axial rotation of said further portion is prevented and thus said at least one wheel is prevented from rotation about said further portion and is limited to rotation about an axis formed by said first portion.
- 30. A device in accordance with claim 1 wherein not less than two of said carrier devices nest upon each other when the wheels and other component parts of said devices are in their stowed positions.
- 31. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said wheel support unit latching means are accessed by the user from the outer perimeter of said support frame when said wheel support units occupy the first, operative position, and movement of at least a portion of the wheel support units to the said second, stowed position opens at least a partial cavity area in the outer perimeter of the side elevational profile of the support frame.
- 32. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the outer perimeter of the support frame maintains a substantially continuous contour including the profile of the said wheel support units in their first, operative position, and movement of at least a portion of the said wheel support units to the second, stowed position causes interruption of the substantially continuous contour in said outer perimeter, revealing at least one interrupted cavity in said profile otherwise occupied at least by a part of said wheel support units in their operative position.
- 33. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said wheel support unit latching means are integrated as part of said wheel support units, and are accessible from either of two facing sides of said units, particularly, from the outer perimeter facing side when said units are in the first, operative position, and when said units are moved 270 degrees to the second, stowed position said latching means are accessed by the user from the reverse side of said units.
- 34. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein adjacent facing portions of at least part of the support frame include facing cavities therein and at least one of said wheel support units include oppositely extending pivot elements which are received in said cavities and about which the associated wheel support unit pivots.
- 35. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one said wheel support unit, in said first, operative position, occupies a portion of the profile of the outer perimeter of the said support frame, and in the second, stowed position, a lesser portion of said wheel support unit continues to occupy the profile of said outer perimeter, and a corresponding cavity is exposed in said outer perimeter of said support frame.
- 36. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one of the wall structures includes a substantially “U”-shaped support portion which further serves as a push and pull handle for the carrier device in a first, operative position, and in a second, stowed position of said wall structure, said wall structure and the substantially “U”-shaped handle are stowed substantially within the side-elevational profile of the support frame.
- 37. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one wheel support unit supports a pair of wheels.
- 38. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said tow bar also serves as a push and pull handle.
- 39. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein said wall structure's “U”-shaped handle is adjustable by virtue of two corresponding pivot points mounted along the frame of said handle.
- 40. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one of the wall structures includes at least one shaped element designed as a seat back for a seated occupant.
- 41. A carrier device in accordance with claim 40 wherein at least one set of child restraints is included within said seat back.
- 42. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one of the wall structures includes flexible material that is formed so as to provide an overhead covering which is interconnectable with adjacent wall structures to substantially enclose the carrier device.
- 43. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the flexible material of the plurality of wall structures interconnects in the first, operative position, to form a covered carrier device including an entry portion which is selectively manipulable to provide access to the interior of the carrier device.
- 44. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein a portion of the support frame is shaped to form a hand hold for lifting said device when in the stowed profile.
- 45. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein a formed section of the support frame is shaped so that the collapsed and stowed device may hang from a suitable projection on a wall.
- 46. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wall structures, in said erected state, are connected by hook and loop fasteners which are manually manipulable by a user.
- 47. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wall structures, in their erected state, are retained together by virtue of manually manipulable connectors attached to the contiguous portions of such wall structures.
- 48. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one wheel support unit is secured in place along the support frame by a pair of wheel support brackets through which a dowel structure passes, and said dowel also passes transversely through spaced openings in the wheel support unit and specially spaced cavities within each of the wheel support brackets receive specially shaped portions of at least one latch mounted within said wheel support unit which specially shaped receiving portions serve to lock said wheel support unit in both the operative and the stowed position of said at least one wheel support unit.
- 49. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein at least one latch structure mounted within at least one wheel support unit includes an integrated spring element.
- 50. A carrier device in accordance with claim 1 wherein the wheel support unit includes a dowel member passing through said wheel support unit transversely, and said wheel support unit receives through a first opening, a wheel support axle perpendicularly to said dowel structure and said wheel axle travels completely through an opening in said dowel structure, and after having passed through said opening and also through a wall of said wheel support casing, a terminal fixing member secures both the dowel and the wheel support axle placement within the wheel support unit.
- 51. A carrier device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the forward most wheel support unit, in the second, stowed position, serves to retain within the side-elevational profile of the support frame, the shaped section mounted to the support frame which accommodates at least one child's feet.
- 52. A wheeled carrier device, said device comprising:
a support frame defining a side elevational profile and an outer perimeter; a tow bar selectively mountable to, and removable from, said support frame; a retention element affixed to said support frame which forms at least a partial retention base; and a plurality of foldable and selectively removable wall structures at least partly mounted to the support frame, which in a first, operative position are erected and in a second stowed position all said wall structures move and collapse substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame; at least one forward most and at least two rear wheel support units affixed to said support frame; each of said wheel support units comprising at least one wheel having an outer periphery, defining a plane and having a central axis of rotation, and said wheel support units each being movable between a first, operative position wherein said wheels are erected to provide rolling support for said support frame and wherein the plane defined by each of said wheels extends substantially orthogonally to the side elevational profile of the support frame, and a second, stowed position, the plane defined by said wheels of said wheel support units being swept through an angle during movement of said wheel support units between said first and second positions such that the plane defined by each of said wheels in the second position of said wheel support units are substantially parallel with and substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame and said wheel's central axis of rotation is wholly within the support frame outer perimeter; and the at least one forward most wheel support unit mounted to, and removable from, an aspect of the support frame further includes:
at least one arm structure mounted to the axis of rotation of said forward most wheel; at least a portion of the at least one forward most wheel support unit further includes at least one brace, and in a first, operative position said brace of said forward most wheel support unit at least partly abuts said support frame, and in a second, stowed position at least a part of said brace is detached from said abutment to said support frame; and manually releasable latching means, for positively latching all said wheel support units in both of said first and second positions thereof.
- 53. A wheeled carrier device, said device comprising:
a support frame defining a side elevational profile and an outer perimeter; a tow bar selectively mountable to, and removable from, said support frame; a retention element affixed to said support frame which forms at least a partial retention base; a plurality of foldable and selectively removable wall structures at least partly mounted to the support frame, which in a first, operative position are erected and at least one wall structure includes at least a partial roof covering, and in a second, stowed position all said wall structures move and collapse substantially within the side-elevational profile of said support frame; at least two wheel support units affixed to said support frame; each of said wheel support units comprising at least one wheel having an outer periphery, defining a plane and having a central axis of rotation, and said wheel support units each being movable between a first, operative position wherein said wheels are erected to provide rolling support for said support frame and wherein the plane defined by each of said wheels extends substantially orthogonally to the side elevational profile of the support frame, and a second, stowed position, the plane defined by said wheels of said wheel support units being swept through an angle during movement of said wheel support units between said first and second positions such that the plane defined by each of said wheels in the second position of said wheel support units are substantially parallel with and substantially within the side elevational profile of said support frame and said wheel's central axis of rotation is wholly within the support frame outer perimeter; manually releasable latching means, for positively latching all said wheel support units in both of said first and second positions thereof, and at least a part of at least one wheel support unit, when in said second, stowed and latched position, serves to secure and retain all of said wall structures in their said second, stowed position, between said retention element and at least one said wheel support unit.
