Claims
- 1. A folding seat disposable in a seating configuration and a storage configuration, said seat comprising:
- a seat bottom providing a substantially horizontal support surface when said seat is disposed in said seating configuration, said seat bottom having a first hinge portion integral therewith adapted to cooperate with a corresponding second hinge portion, said seat bottom also having a first overlap surface integral therewith;
- a seat back providing a substantially vertical support surface when said seat is disposed in said seating configuration, said seat back having said second hinge portion integral therewith adapted to cooperate with said first hinge portion; said seat back also having a second overlap surface integral therewith;
- a ridge portion extending radially beyond at least one of said first or second hinge portions, wherein said ridge portion is adapted to limit the relative positions of said seat bottom and said seat back; and
- wherein said first overlap surface and said second overlap surface are adapted to avoid pinching of an object between said seat bottom and said seat back when operated between said seating configuration and said storage configuration.
- 2. The seat of claim 1, wherein said first overlap surface and said second overlap surface are arcuate surfaces adapted to nest one inside of the other.
- 3. The seat of claim 1, wherein each of seat bottom and said seat back are molded of a material selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic or thermoset polymers.
- 4. The seat of claim 1, wherein said ridge portion is an abutment surface.
- 5. The seat of claim 1, wherein said ridge portion is a shoulder.
- 6. The seat of claim 1, wherein said second hinge portion is disposed on a sidewall integral to said seat back.
- 7. The seat of claim 6, wherein said sidewall also includes a flange surface defined therein, and wherein said second hinge portion rotatably engages said first hinge portion disposing an edge of said first hinge portion in mechanical juxtaposition with said flange surface.
- 8. The seat of claim 1, wherein said seat back includes an abutment surface adapted to abut an edge of said seat bottom.
- 9. The seat of claim 8, wherein said edge of said seat bottom is an edge of said first overlap surface.
- 10. The seat of claim 1, wherein said first hinge portion is disposed on a sidewall integral to said seat bottom.
- 11. The seat of claim 10, wherein said sidewall also includes a flange surface defined therein, and wherein said first hinge portion rotatably engages said second hinge portion disposing an edge of said second hinge portion in mechanical juxtaposition with said flange surface.
- 12. The seat of claim 1, wherein said seat bottom includes an abutment surface adapted to abut an edge of said seat back.
- 13. The seat of claim 12, wherein said abutment surface and an edge of said seat bottom are adapted to interlock said seat back with said seat bottom.
- 14. The seat of claim 12, wherein said edge of said seat back is an edge of said second overlap surface.
- 15. The seat of claim 12, wherein said abutment surface and said edge of said seat back are adapted to interlock said seat back with said seat bottom.
- 16. The seat of claim 15, wherein at least one of said abutment surface and said edge of said seat back include a tab and the other one of said abutment surface and said edge of said seat back include a slot which cooperate to provide said interlocking of said seat back and said seat base.
- 17. The seat of claim 15, wherein at least one of an abutment surface and said edge of said seat bottom include a tab and the other one of said abutment surface and said edge of said seat bottom include a slot which cooperate to provide said interlocking of said seat back and said seat bottom.
- 18. The seat of claim 1, wherein at least one of said seat bottom and said seat back are adapted to removably accept a seat panel.
- 19. The seat of claim 18, wherein said seat panel converts a relatively compact seat to a relatively larger seat when removably coupled to said seat.
- 20. The seat of claim 18, wherein said seat panel provides a substantially flat surface having a downwardly extending front end and an upwardly extending back end.
- 21. The seat of claim 18, wherein said seat panel includes structural elements adapted to provide strength to the seat having said seat panel removably coupled thereto.
- 22. The seat of claim 21, wherein said structural elements are ribs disposed on a surface of said seat panel.
- 23. The seat of claim 18, wherein said seat panel is adapted to allow for attaching of upholstery directly to the seat panel.
- 24. The seat of claim 23, wherein said adaptation of said seat panel for attaching of upholstery includes ribbing positioned along a perimeter of said seat panel.
- 25. The seat of claim 23, wherein said adaptation of said seat panel for attaching of upholstery includes slots to permit straps of upholstery material to be passed through the seat panel.
- 26. The seat of claim 23, wherein said slots include lister holes.
- 27. A seat comprising:
- a first seat component having a first and second sidewall integral therewith, wherein each of said first and second sidewalls has a flange portion defined thereon, and wherein each of said first and second sidewalls also has a flange surface defined thereon;
- a second seat component having a third and fourth sidewall integral therewith, wherein each of said third and fourth sidewalls has a flange portion defined thereon, and wherein each of said third and fourth sidewalls also has a flange surface defined thereon;
- wherein said first and second seat components are rotatably engaged with each other at said flange portions, and wherein said rotatable engagement disposes an edge of each of said flange portions of said first seat component and said second seat component in juxtaposition with a corresponding flange surface of the other one of said first seat component and said second seat component;
- said first seat component further includes an abutment surface adapted to abut a corresponding edge of said second seat component and said second seat component further includes an abutment surface adapted to abut a corresponding edge of said first seat component; and
- wherein at least one of said abutment surfaces and said edges includes a tab and the corresponding other one of said abutment surfaces and said edges includes a slot which cooperate to provide interlocking of said first seat component and said second seat component.
- 28. The seat of claim 27, wherein said flange portion of each of said first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls is substantially circular in shape, and wherein each of said flange surfaces of said first, second, third, and fourth sidewalls circumscribes at least a portion of a corresponding one of said circular flange portions.
- 29. The seat of claim 25, wherein at least one of said first seat component and said second seat component includes a spring lock disposed to bear against an edge portion of said other one of said first seat component and said second seat component.
- 30. The seat of claim 27, wherein said first seat component further includes a first overlap portion integral therewith, and wherein said second seat component further includes a second overlap portion integral therewith, and wherein said first overlap portion and said second overlap portion are adapted to avoid pinching an object between said first seat component and said second seat component when rotated with respect to each other.
- 31. The seat of claim 30, wherein said first overlap portion meets at least one of said first sidewall and said second sidewall to form an arcuate transition surface there between, and wherein said second overlap portion meets at least one of said third sidewall and said fourth sidewall to form an arcuate transition surface there between.
- 32. The seat of claim 25, wherein said abutment surface of said first seat component and said edge of said second seat component are adapted to interlock said first seat component with said second seat component.
- 33. The seat of claim 32, wherein said abutment surface of said second seat component and said edge of said first seat component are adapted to interlock said first seat component with said second seat component.
- 34. The seat of claim 27, wherein a transition region from a support surface of said first seat component to at least one of said first and second sidewalls forms an arcuate surface extending the length of said sidewall.
- 35. The seat of claim 34, wherein a transition region from a support surface of said second seat component to at least one of said third and fourth sidewalls forms an arcuate surface extending the length of said sidewall.
- 36. A seat comprising:
- a first seat component having a first and second sidewall integral therewith, wherein each of said first and second sidewalls has a substantially circular flange portion defined thereon, and wherein each of said first and second sidewalls also has a flange surface defined thereon which circumscribes at least a portion of said flange portion, and wherein said first seat component further includes a first overlap portion integral therewith;
- a second seat component having a third and fourth sidewall integral therewith, wherein each of said third and fourth sidewalls has a substantially circular flange portion defined thereon, and wherein each of said third and fourth sidewalls also has a flange surface defined thereon which circumscribes at least a portion of said flange portion, and wherein said second seat component further includes a second overlap portion integral therewith; and
- a ridge portion extending radially beyond at least one of said flange portions, wherein said ridge portion is adapted to limit the relative positions of said first seat component and said second seat component;
- wherein said first and second seat components are rotatably engaged with each other at said flange portions, and wherein said rotatable engagement disposes an edge of each of said flange portions of said first seat component and said second seat component in juxtaposition with a corresponding flange surface of the other one of said first seat component and said second seat component, and wherein said first overlap portion and said second overlap portion are adapted to avoid pinching an object between said first seat component and said second seat component when rotated with respect to each other.
- 37. The seat of claim 35, wherein said first overlap portion is coupled to at least one of said first and said second sidewall through a transition region defining an arcuate surface, and wherein said second overlap portion is coupled to at least one of said third and said fourth sidewall through a transition region defining an arcuate surface.
- 38. The seat of claim 36, wherein said first overlap portion and said second overlap portion are arcuate surfaces adapted to nest one inside of the other.
