Claims
- 1. A folding multi-tool comprising:
- a first generally channel-shaped handle having a first end and a second end, and including a side having a cavity adapted to receive a removable tool cartridge;
- a second handle having a first end and a second end; and
- pliers having first and second plier halves pivotally joined to each other, each of the plier halves being pivotally joined to a respective first end of said handles,
- wherein the folding multi-tool is foldable between (1) a closed, compact configuration and (2) an opened, extended configuration, for operating said pliers, in which said second handle faces the side of said first handle that has the cavity and wherein said first handle comprises a spring, the spring being positioned to hold the cartridge in the cavity.
- 2. The folding multi-tool according to claim 1,
- wherein said second handle is generally channel-shaped and includes a side having a cavity adapted to receive a removable tool cartridge, and
- wherein, in the opened, extended configuration, said first handle faces the side of said second handle that has the cavity.
- 3. The folding multi-tool according to claim 2, wherein the cavity in the side of said first handle and the cavity in the side of said second handle have substantially similar shapes.
- 4. The folding multi-tool according to claim 1, wherein the cavity is deeper at the second end of said first handle than at the first end of said first handle.
- 5. The folding multi-tool according to claim 1, wherein the cartridge has an alignment protrusion, and said first handle has an alignment notch for receiving the alignment protrusion.
- 6. A folding multi-tool comprising:
- a first generally channel-shaped handle having a first end and a second end, and first and second sides opposite each other;
- a second handle having a first end, a second end, a first side, and a second side;
- pliers pivotally mounted to the first end of said handles; and
- a plurality of-tools pivotally mounted within a removable cartridge that is received within a cavity in said first handle
- wherein said first handle comprises a spring, the spring being positioned to hold the cartridge in the cavity.
- 7. The folding multi-tool of claim 6, wherein said pliers open from the first side of said handles and said plurality of tools open from the second side of said first handle.
- 8. The folding multi-tool according to claim 6, further comprising a second removable cartridge that is received within a cavity in said second handle, the second cartridge containing a plurality of tools pivotally mounted therein.
- 9. The folding multi-tool according to claim 8, wherein the cavity in said first handle and the cavity in said second handle have substantially similar shapes.
- 10. The folding multi-tool according to claim 6, wherein the cavity is deeper at the second end of said first handle than at the first end of said first handle.
- 11. A folding multi-tool comprising:
- a first generally channel-shaped handle having a first end and a second end, and first and second sides opposite each other;
- a second handle having a first end, a second end, a first side, and a second side;
- pliers pivotally mounted to the first end of said handles; and
- a plurality of tools pivotally mounted within a removable cartridge that is received within a cavity in said first handle,
- wherein the cartridge has an alignment protrusion, and said first handle has an alignment notch for receiving the alignment protrusion.
- 12. A foldable tool comprising:
- first and second jaws, each of said jaws having an operating end and a tang end, said jaws pivotably connected to each other intermediate the operating end and the tang end of each jaw;
- a first handle having a front end and a rear end, and a cavity adapted to receive a removable cartridge; and
- a second handle having a front end and a rear end,
- wherein the front end of each of said handles is pivotably connected to a respective one of the tangs so as to enable said handles to be moved between (1) an extended position in which each handle is engaged with a respective jaw so that said jaws will close when said handles are moved toward each other and said jaws will open when said handles are moved apart, and (2) a closed position, and wherein said first handle comprises a spring, the spring being positioned to hold the cartridge in the cavity.
- 13. The foldable tool according to claim 12, wherein the cavity is deeper at the rear end of said first handle than at the front end of said first handle.
- 14. A foldable tool comprising:
- first and second jaws, each of said jaws having an operating end and a tang end, said jaws pivotably connected to each other intermediate the operating end and the tang end of each jaw;
- a first handle having a front end and a rear end, and a cavity adapted to receive a removable cartridge; and
- a second handle having a front end and a rear end,
- wherein the front end of each of said handles is pivotably connected to a respective one of the tangs so as to enable said handles to be moved between (1) an extended position in which each handle is engaged with a respective jaw so that said jaws will close when said handles are moved toward each other and said jaws will open when said handles are moved apart, and (2) a closed position, wherein the cartridge has an alignment protrusion, and said first handle has at least one sidewall having an alignment notch for receiving the alignment protrusion.
- 15. A foldable tool comprising;
- first and second jaws, each of said jaws having an operating end and a tang end, said jaws pivotally connected to each other about a pivot located between the operating end and the tang end of each jaw;
- a first handle having a base and a pair of sidewalls running in a front-to-rear direction, inner surfaces of the base and the sidewalls defining a cavity therebetween, the cavity being adapted to receive a removable cartridge, an outer surface of the base providing a grasping surface; and
- a second handle,
- wherein a front end of each of said handles is pivotably connected to a respective one of the tangs so as to enable said handles to be moved between (1) an extended position in which the cavity of said first handle faces said second handle, a rear end of each of said handles and the operating end of said jaws are disposed on opposite sides of the pivot, and each handle is engaged with respective jaw so that said jaw will close when said handles are moved toward each other and will open when said handles are moved apart, and (2) a closed position in which the rear end of each of said handles and the operating ends of said jaws are disposed on a same side of the pivot, and the grasping surfaces of said first and second handles face each other, and wherein said first handle comprises a spring, the spring being positioned to hold the cartridge in the cavity.
- 16. The foldable tool according to claim 15, wherein the cavity is deeper at the rear end of said first handle than at the front end of said first handle.
- 17. The foldable tool according to claim 15, wherein the alignment notch is located near the rear of said first handle, and the alignment notch has an open end and a rounded closed end with the rounded closed end located closer to the rear of said first handle than the open end.
- 18. A foldable tool comprising:
- first and second jaws, each of said jaws having an operating end and a tang end, said jaws pivotally connected to each other about a pivot located between the operating end and the tang end of each jaw;
- a first handle having a base and a pair of sidewalls running in a front-to-rear direction, inner surfaces of the base and the sidewalls defining a cavity therebetween, the cavity being adapted to receive a removable cartridge, an outer surface of the base providing a grasping surface; and
- a second handle,
- wherein a front end of each of said handles is pivotably connected to a respective one of the tangs so as to enable said handles to be moved between (1) an extended position in which the cavity of said first handle faces said second handle, a rear end of each of said handles and the operating end of said jaws are disposed on opposite sides of the pivot, and each handle is engaged with respective jaw so that said jaw will close when said handles are moved toward each other and will open when said handles are moved apart, and (2) a closed position in which the rear end of each of said handles and the operating ends of said jaws are disposed on a same side of the pivot, and the grasping surfaces of said first and second handles face each other, wherein at least one of the sidewalls of said first handle has an alignment notch for receiving an alignment protrusion of the cartridge.
- 19. The foldable tool according to claim 15, comprising a removable cartridge adapted to fit in the cavity, the cartridge including at least one tool blade pivotably mounted to said cartridge to enable movement between a stowed position inside said cartridge and an extended position.
- 20. The foldable tool system according to claim 19, wherein said cartridge includes means for removing said cartridge from the cavity.
