Claims
- 1. A spring for a body support comprising serially merging upper, intermediate, and lower runs, each of said upper and lower runs including a generally linear fixed end position merging with and extending from respective opposite ends of said intermediate run, each of said upper and lower runs further including a generally linear free end that is substantially collinear with its corresponding upper or lower run fixed end portion, said upper run fixed end portion and said lower run fixed end portion being parallel to each other and defining a plane, said upper run including an offset portion projecting from one side of said plane in a first direction substantially normal to said plane, and said lower run including an offset portion projecting from another side of said plane in a second direction substantially opposite said first direction.
- 2. The spring of claim 1, wherein said spring is a sinuous spring such that said intermediate run comprises a plurality of serially merging undulations.
- 3. The spring of claim 2, wherein each of said plurality of undulations is formed by alternating interconnected linear and arcuate portions and wherein said spring includes a section comprising in serially merging relationship a first arcuate portion, a first linear portion, a first offset portion, a second arcuate portion, a second linear portion, and a third arcuate portion, said first offset portion being configured so that said first arcuate and linear portions define a first plane substantially parallel to and lateral of said plane defined by said upper and lower run fixed end portions and said second arcuate and linear portions and said third arcuate portion define a second plane coplanar with said plane defined by said upper and lower run fixed end portions, thereby enabling said first arcuate portion to pass by said third arcuate portion when said spring is compressed.
- 4. The spring of claim 3, further comprising a third linear portion interconnected with said first arcuate portion on the end thereof opposite said first linear portion, and further comprising a second offset portion interconnected with said third linear portion at the end thereof opposite said first arcuate portion, and a fourth arcuate portion interconnected with said second offset portion, said second offset portion being configured so that said fourth arcuate portion is within said second plane and said third linear portion is within said first plane.
- 5. The spring of claim 4, further comprising a third offset portion interconnected with said third arcuate portion, a fourth linear portion, a fifth arcuate portion, a fifth linear portion, a fourth offset portion, and a sixth arcuate portion, said third and fourth offset portions being configured so that said fourth and fifth linear portions and said fifth arcuate portion define a third plane parallel to and laterally offset from said first plane, and so that said sixth arcuate portion is within said second plane.
- 6. The spring of claim 5, wherein said third and fourth offset portions are configured so that said second plane is between said first and third planes.
- 7. The spring of claim 2, wherein each of said upper and lower runs is fixed to an arcuate portion of an undulation, and wherein said upper run extends from its interconnection with its respective arcuate portion in a third direction, and wherein said lower run extends from its interconnection with its respective arcuate portion in a fourth direction, said fourth direction being substantially opposite said third direction.
- 8. The spring defined in claim 1, wherein said spring is formed of wire having a thickness of between 0.08 and 0.12 inches.
- 9. The spring of claim 1, wherein said upper run offset portion and said lower run of offset portion project between about 0.125 and 0.5 inches from the plane defined by said upper and lower run fixed end portions.
- 10. A sinuous spring comprising a plurality of undulations formed by alternating interconnected linear and arcuate portions and including a section comprising in serially merging relationship a first arcuate portion, a first linear portion, a first offset portion, a second arcuate portion, a second linear portion, and a third arcuate portion, said first offset portion being configured so that said first arcuate and linear portions define a first plane and said second arcuate and linear portions and said third arcuate portion define a second plane substantially parallel to and lateral of said first plane, thereby enabling said first arcuate portion to pass by said third arcuate portion when said spring is compressed.
- 11. The spring of claim 10, further comprising a third linear portion interconnected with said first arcuate portion on the end thereof opposite said first linear portion, and further comprising a second offset portion interconnected with said third linear portion at the end thereof opposite said first arcuate portion, and a fourth arcuate portion interconnected with said second offset portion, said second offset portion being configured so that said fourth arcuate portion is within said second plane and said third linear portion is within said first plane.
- 12. The spring of claim 11, further comprising a third offset portion interconnected with said third arcuate portion, a fourth linear portion, a fifth arcuate portion, a fifth linear portion, a fourth offset portion, and a sixth arcuate portion, said third and fourth offset portions being configured so that said fourth and fifth linear portions and said fifth arcuate portion define a third plane parallel to and laterally offset from said first plane, and so that said sixth arcuate portion is within said second plane.
- 13. The spring of claim 12, wherein said third and fourth offset portions are configured so that said second plane is between said first and third planes.
- 14. The spring of claim 10, further comprising upper and lower runs, each of which has a free end and is fixed to an arcuate portion of one of the undulation, and wherein said upper run free end extends from its interconnection with its respective arcuate portion in a first direction, and wherein said lower run free end extends from its interconnection with its respective arcuate portion in a second direction, said second direction being substantially opposite said first direction.
- 15. A spring for a body support comprising a plurality of undulations formed by alternating interconnected linear and arcuate portions and including a section comprising in serially merging relationship a first arcuate portion, a first offset portion, a first linear portion, a second arcuate portion, a second linear portion, a second offset portion, and a third arcuate portion, said first and second offset portions being configured so that said first and third arcuate portions define a first plane and said second arcuate portion and said first and third linear portions define a second plane substantially parallel to and lateral of said first plane.
- 16. The spring of claim 5, further comprising a third linear portion interconnected with said third arcuate portion and a fourth arcuate portion interconnected with said third linear portion, said third linear portion and said fourth arcuate portion being in said first plane so that said second linear portion passes by said third linear portion when said spring is compressed.
