Claims
- 1. A construct comprising a DNA sequence capable of expressing interferon in animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease, wherein said interferon is expressed upon administration to said animals.
- 2. The construct of claim 1, wherein said interferon is interferon-α or interferon-β.
- 3. The construct of claim 1, wherein said animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are selected from the group consisting of swine, cattle or sheep.
- 4. The construct of claim 1, wherein said construct additionally comprises a DNA sequence capable of expressing a foot and mouth disease virus which stimulates an immune response upon administration to animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease.
- 5. A vector comprising the construct of claim 1.
- 6. The vector of claim 5, wherein the interferon is interferon-α or interferon-β.
- 7. The vector of claim 5, wherein the vector comprises a viral gene transfer vector.
- 8. The vector of claim 7, wherein the viral gene transfer vector is selected from the group consisting of adenovirus, adeno-associated virus, parvovirus, vaccinia virus, herpesvirus, poxvirus, poliovirus and retrovirus vectors.
- 9. The vector of claim 5 wherein the animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are swine, cattle or sheep.
- 10. A vector comprising the construct of claim 4.
- 11. The vector of claim 10, wherein said interferon is interferon-α or interferon-β.
- 12. The vector of claim 10, wherein the vector comprises a viral gene transfer vector.
- 13. The vector of claim 12, wherein the viral gene transfer vector is selected from the group consisting of adenovirus, adeno-associated virus, parvovirus, vaccinia virus, herpesvirus, poxvirus, poliovirus and retrovirus vectors.
- 14. The vector of claim 10, wherein the animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are swine, cattle or sheep.
- 15. A vaccine comprising the construct of claim 1 in an amount effective for conferring a protective response in animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease and a physiologically acceptable carrier.
- 16. The vaccine of claim 15, wherein said interferon is interferon-α or interferon-β.
- 17. The vaccine of claim 15 wherein said animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are swine, cattle or sheep.
- 18. A vaccine comprising the construct of claim 4 in an amount effective for conferring a protective response in animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease and a physiologically acceptable carrier.
- 19. The vaccine of claim 18, wherein said interferon is interferon-α or interferon-β.
- 20. The vaccine of claim 18, wherein said animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are swine, cattle or sheep.
- 21. The vaccine of claim 15, wherein said vaccine is a composition which additionally comprises an effective foot and mouth disease virus vaccine in an amount effective for stimulating a protective response in animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease.
- 22. The vaccine of claim 21, wherein said animals susceptible to foot and mouth disease are swine, cattle or sheep.
- 23. A method for protecting susceptible animals from foot and mouth disease comprising inoculating said animals with an effective dosage of the vaccine of any of claims 15-22.
