Claims
- 1. A method for making a lignocellulosic composite, comprising:
applying an adhesive composition to at least one lignocellulosic substrate, the adhesive composition comprising a reaction product of (i) a first ingredient selected from soy protein or lignin and (ii) at least one substantially formaldehyde-free curing agent that includes at least one amine, amide, imine, imide, or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic functional group that can react with at least one functional group of the soy protein or lignin; and bonding the adhesive-applied lignocellulosic substrate to at least one other lignocellulosic substrate.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the amine, amide, imine, imide, or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic functional group of the curing agent forms a covalent bond with at least one carboxylic acid or amino functional group of the soy protein or lignin.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the adhesive composition comprises an aqueous solution of the reaction product.
- 4. The method according to claim 3, further comprising preparing the adhesive composition by mixing an aqueous soy protein or lignin solution with an aqueous curing agent solution.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the bonding comprises applying heat and pressure to an assembly of the adhesive-applied lignocellulosic substrate and the other lignocellulosic substrate.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein the bonding cures the adhesive composition.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the lignocellulosic substrates comprises comminuted wood particles and the method comprises:
blending about 1 to about 12 weight percent of the adhesive composition with a mixture of the comminuted wood particles, the weight percent being based on the combined weight of the adhesive composition and the comminuted wood particles; forming the adhesive/wood particle blend into a predetermined configuration; and applying heat and pressure to the formed blend.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein the lignocellulosic substrates comprises a wood veneer substrate and the method comprises:
applying the adhesive composition to at least one surface of the wood veneer substrate; forming an assembly of the adhesive-applied wood veneer substrates; and applying heat and pressure to the assembly.
- 9. A method for making a lignocellulosic composite, comprising:
applying a substantially formaldehyde-free adhesive composition to at least one lignocellulosic substrate, the adhesive composition comprising a reaction product of (i) a first ingredient selected from a protein or lignin and (ii) at least one compound selected from an adduct of an epoxide with a polyamine, polyamidoamine, or polyamide resin; and bonding the adhesive-applied lignocellulosic substrate to at least one other lignocellulosic substrate.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the adhesive composition comprises an aqueous solution of the reaction product.
- 11. The method of claim 9, wherein the first ingredient comprises a soy protein.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the soy protein comprises a soy protein isolate.
- 13. The method according to claim 9, further comprising preparing the adhesive composition by mixing an aqueous protein or lignin solution with an aqueous solution of the adduct.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the bonding comprises applying heat and pressure to an assembly of the adhesive-applied lignocellulosic substrate and the other lignocellulosic substrate.
- 15. The method of claim 9, wherein the bonding cures the adhesive composition.
- 16. The method of claim 13, wherein the mix ratio of protein to the adduct is about 1:1 to about 1:0.05, based on dry weight.
- 17. The method of claim 10, wherein the aqueous adhesive solution is an alkaline solution.
- 18. The method of claim 13, further comprising providing an alkaline aqueous protein solution.
- 19. The method of claim 16, wherein the protein comprises soy protein.
- 20. The method of claim 9, wherein the adhesive composition comprises a two part system that includes a first part comprising the protein and a second part comprising the adduct, and the method further comprises mixing the first and second part together not more than about 10 hours prior to applying the adhesive composition to the lignocellulosic substrate.
- 21. A method for making a lignocellulosic composite, comprising:
applying a substantially formaldehyde-free adhesive composition to at least one lignocellulosic substrate, the adhesive composition comprising a reaction product of (i) a first ingredient selected from a protein or lignin, (ii) a first compound that includes at least one amine, amide, imine, imide, or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic functional group that can react with at least one functional group of the protein and (iii) a curing agent; and bonding the adhesive-applied lignocellulosic substrate to at least one other lignocellulosic substrate.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the first compound is selected from at least one alkyl amine, unsaturated hydrocarbon amine, hydroxyl amine, amidine, imine, or amido acid.
- 23. The method of claim 21, wherein the curing agent is selected from at least one epoxide, alkanol or aldehyde.
- 24. The method of claim 21, comprising initially reacting the protein or lignin with the first compound under conditions sufficient for producing a modified protein or lignin and then reacting the modified protein or lignin with the curing agent.
- 25. The method of claim 24, wherein the first compound is selected from at least one alkyl amine, unsaturated hydrocarbon amine, hydroxyl amine, amidine, imine or amino acid and the curing agent is selected from at least one epoxide, alkanol or aldehyde.
- 26. The method of claim 21, wherein the adhesive composition comprises an aqueous solution of the reaction product.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the protein or lignin, first compound and curing agent are each provided as aqueous solutions.
- 28. The method of claim 24, wherein the adhesive composition comprises a two part system that includes a first part comprising the modified protein or lignin and a second part comprising the curing agent, and the method further comprises mixing the first and second part together not more than about 10 hours prior to applying the adhesive composition to the lignocellulosic substrate.
- 29. A method for making a substantially formaldehyde-free adhesive composition, comprising:
reacting a protein or lignin with a first compound that includes at least one amine, amide, imine, imide or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic functional group that can react with at least one function group of the protein or lignin resulting in a modified protein or lignin; and subsequently reacting the modified protein or lignin with a curing agent.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the first compound is selected from at least one alkyl amine, unsaturated hydrocarbon amine, hydroxyl amine, amidine, imine, or amino acid and the curing agent is selected from at least one epoxide, alkanol or aldehyde.
- 31. A lignocellulosic composite made by the method of claim 1.
- 32. A lignocellulosic composite made by the method of claim 9.
- 33. A lignocellulosic composite made by the method of claim 21.
- 34. The method of claim 1, wherein the first ingredient comprises soy protein.
- 35. The method of claim 1, wherein the first ingredient comprises lignin.
- 36. The method of claim 9, wherein the first ingredient comprises soy protein.
- 37. The method of claim 9, wherein the first ingredient comprises lignin.
