Claims
- 1. In apparatus for conditioning thermoplastic preforms to be molded into containers comprising:
- a temperature-conditioning assembly for bringing preforms to molecular orientation temperature; and
- a preform supply assembly for said temperature-conditioning assembly;
- the combination therewith of:
- A. preform cooling means proximate to but spaced from said temperature-conditioning assembly for reducing the temperature of preforms to substantially below molecular orientation temperature;
- B. an integral extension of said supply assembly to accommodate said preform cooling means with preforms, said extension including a loading mechanism for said preform cooling means;
- C. means selectively actuating said loading mechanism when any means downstreams of the supply assembly is inoperative to receive preforms, and
- D. means for collecting preforms at the outlet of said preform cooling means.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said preform cooling means comprises:
- A. an elongated housing disposed in the same general direction as said temperature-conditioning assembly;
- B. means for supporting preforms within the housing;
- C. means for conveying supported preforms through said housing; and
- D. cooling means for maintaining a reduced temperature within said housing.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 including:
- flame polishing means above the housing for finishing open ends of the preforms.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:
- said integral extension comprises:
- i. a pair of vertically spaced chains mounted for linear movement across and above an entry end of said preform cooling means; and
- ii. a series of side-by-side carrier assemblies supported on said chains.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein:
- said means for conveying supported preforms comprises:
- i. a pair of laterally spaced endless chains extending substantially the length of the housing; and
- ii. an indexing mechanism operatively connected to said chains; and
- said means for supporting the preforms comprises:
- i. horizontal support bars sequentially secured at either end to said chains having a series of laterally adjacent openings therein sized to support a preform at a molded ledge thereon.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein:
- said cooling means is self-contained within the housing and comprises:
- i. a water cooled heat exchanger; and
- ii. a fan for recirculating air across said heat exchanger and through said housing.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein:
- said carrier assemblies each comprise:
- i. a holder portion for supporting a preform; and
- ii. a trip mechanism associated with the holder portion adapted to abruptly shift said holder portion to a preform-release position; and
- said loading mechanism of the integral extension comprises:
- i. a pivoted actuating bar above the entry end of the preform cooling means for simultaneously triggering a plurality of trip mechanisms; and
- ii. means causing said bar to pivot into and out of contact with the trip mechanisms.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein:
- said means selectively actuating said loading mechanism comprises:
- i. a carrier assembly counting switch for continuously cyclically actuating the means for causing said bar to pivot.
- 9. In blow molding apparatus for forming molecularly oriented containers from molded performs comprising:
- an elongated preform-temperature-conditioning assembly for bringing preforms to molecular orientation temperature;
- a preform supply assembly for said preform-temperature-conditioning assembly; and
- stretch-blow assemblies on a movably mounted carrier positioned in close proximity to the preform-temperature-conditioning assembly for converting temperature-conditioned preforms into said containers;
- the combination therewith of:
- A. preform cooling means proximate to but spaced from said temperature-conditioning assembly for reducing the temperature of preforms to substantially below molecular orientation temperature;
- B. an integral extension of said preform supply assembly to accommodate said preform cooling means with preforms, said extension including a loading mechanism;
- C. means actuating said loading mechanism when said carrier stops; and
- D. means for collecting preforms issuing from said cooling means for subsequent processing into such containers.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein:
- said stretch-blow assemblies include water cooled molds;
- said preform cooling means includes:
- i. an elongated housing disposed in the same general direction as said preform-temperature-conditioning assembly;
- ii. cooling means for maintaining a reduced temperature within said housing; and
- including in the combination:
- cooling water diverting means for diverting cooling water from the molds to the cooling means when the carrier stops.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 including:
- a screw fed trimming assembly for the preforms operatively associated with the preform supply assembly for the preform-temperature conditioning assembly; and
- said means actuating the loading mechanism includes:
- i. a switch operatively associated with said screw for cyclically energizing the loading mechanism after a predetermined number of revolutions of said screw.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said cooling water diverting means is automatically changed from a mold-feed position to a cooler-feed position after the carrier stops.
