Claims
- 1. The method of forming a paper-like sheet comprising a continuous-phase of polyester comprising repeat units form terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, having dispersed therein microbeads of crosslinked polymer encircled by void spaces when viewed in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the sheet, said void space formed from substantially closed cells so that substantially no open fluid transport path extends across opposed sides of said article, said crosslinked polymer comprises polymerizable organic material which is a member selected form the group consisting of an alkenyl aromatic compound having the general formula ##STR4## wherein Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or an aromatic halohydrocarbon radical of the benzene series and R is hydrogen or the methyl radical; acrylate-type monomers include monomers of the formula ##STR5## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an alkyl radical containing from about 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R, is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl; copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl esters having the formula ##STR6## wherein R is an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 18 carbon atoms; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, oleic acid, vinylbenzoic acid; the synthetic polyester resins which are prepared by reacting terephthalic acid and dialkyl terephthalics or ester-forming derivatives thereof, with a glycol of the series HO(CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, wherein n is a whole number within the range of 2-10 and having reactive olefinic linkages within the polymer molecule, the hereinabove described polyesters which include copolymerized therein up to 20 percent by weight of a second acid or ester thereof having reactive olefinic unsaturation and mixtures thereof, and a crosslinking agent selected from the group consisting of divinylbenzene, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diallyl fumarate, diallyl phthalate and mixtures thereof, said method comprising:
- (a) forming a mixture of the continuous-phase of polyester and the crosslinked polymer microbeads, wherein the crosslinked polymer microbeads are uniformly dispersed throughout the continuous-phase of polyester,
- (b) casting a film of said mixture in sheet form and
- (c) orienting said sheet by stretching it, wherein said orienting conditions and the crosslinked polymer microbead character and quantity of use are effective to form doughnut-shaped voids encircling the microbeads lying in planes generally parallel to the surfaces of said sheet.
- 2. A method of forming a shaped article comprising a continuous-phase of an oriented thermoplastic polymer containing crosslinked polymer microbeads at least partially bordered by void space formed from substantially closed cells so that substantially no open fluid transport path extends across opposed sides of said article, said method comprising:
- mixing the continuous-phase thermoplastic polymer in molten form and a plurality of crosslinked polymer microbeads coated with a slip agent and uniformly dispersed throughout the thermoplastic polymer, wherein the thermoplastic polymer has an I.V. of at least 0.50;
- forming a shaped article from the thermoplastic polymer and crosslinked polymer microbead mixture, and
- orienting the article by stretching it in at least one direction, wherein said orienting conditions and the crosslinked polymer microbead character and quantity of use are effective to form voids int eh article at least partially bordering said microbeads on either side thereof in the direction(s) of orientation.
- 3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said shaped article is a sheet, fiber or rod and is oriented by stretching in one direction.
- 4. The method according to claim 2 wherein said shaped article is a sheet and is oriented by stretching in two directions.
- 5. The method according to claim 2 wherein said shaped article is a bottle and is biaxially oriented by blow-molding.
- 6. The method according to claim 2 wherein said continuous phase polymer is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 7. The method of claim 2 wherein said continuous-phase polymer is a polyester comprising repeat units from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol and said crosslinked polymer comprises polymerizable organic material which is a member selected from the group consisting of an alkenyl aromatic compound having the general formula ##STR7## wherein Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or an aromatic halohydrocarbon radical of the benzene series and R is hydrogen or the methyl radical; acrylate-type monomers include monomers of the formula ##STR8## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an alkyl radical containing from about 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R' is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl; copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl esters having the formula ##STR9## wherein R is an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 18 carbon atoms; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, oleic acid, vinylbenzoic acid; the synthetic polyester resins which are prepared by reacting terephthalic acid an dialkyl terephthalics or ester-forming derivatives thereof, with a glycol of the series HO(CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, wherein n is a whole number within the range of 2-10 and having reactive olefinic linkages within the polymer molecule, the hereinabove described polyesters which include copolymerized therein up to 20 percent by weight of a second acid or ester thereof having reactive olefinic unsaturation and mixtures thereof, and a cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of divinylbenzene, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diallyl fumarate, diallyl phthalate and mixtures thereof.
- 8. A method according to claim 2, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a polyester.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, wherein the polyester is poly(ethylene terephthalate) having an I.V. of at least 0.50.
- 10. A method according to claim 2, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is polypropylene.
- 11. A method according to claim 2, wherein the slip agent is selected from silica and alumina.
- 12. A method according to claim 2, wherein the microbeads have an average diameter of about 0.1-50 microns.
- 13. A method according to claim 2, wherein said forming produces a fiber or rod as the shaped article.
- 14. A method according to claim 2, wherein said forming produces a tube as the shaped article.
- 15. A method according to claim 2, wherein said forming produces a sheet as the shaped article.
- 16. A method according to claim 2, wherein said forming produces a bottle as the shaped article.
- 17. A method according to claim 2, wherein said forming causes voiding and imparts an opacity of 0.78 to 1.0 to the shaped article.
- 18. A method of forming a shaped article comprising a continuous phase of an oriented thermoplastic polymer containing crosslinked polymer microbeads at lest partially bordered by void space formed from substantially closed cells so that substantially no open fluid transport path extends across opposed sides of said article, wherein the crosslinked polymer comprises polymerizable organic material selected from a group consisting of an alkenyl aromatic compound having the general formula ##STR10## wherein Ar represents an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or an aromatic halohydrocarbon radical of the benzene series and R is hydrogen or the methyl radical; acrylate-type monomers include monomers of the formula ##STR11## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and an alkyl radical containing from about 1 to 12 carbon atoms and R' is selected form the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl; copolymers of vinyl chloride an vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile an vinyl chloride, vinyl bromide, vinyl esters having the formula ##STR12## wherein R is an alkyl radical containing from 2 to 18 carbon atoms; acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, oleic acid, vinylbenzoic acid; the synthetic polyester resins which are prepared by reacting terephthalic acid and dialkyl terephthalics or ester-forming derivatives thereof, with a glycol of the series HO(CH.sub.2).sub.n OH, wherein n is a whole number within the range of 2-10 and having reactive olefinic linkages within the polymer molecule, the hereinabove described polyesters which include copolymerized therein up to 20 percent by weight of a second acid or ester thereof having reactive olefinic unsaturation and mixtures thereof, and a cross-linking agent selected from the group consisting of divinylbenzene, diethylene glycol dimethacrylate, diallyl fumarate, diallyl phthalate and mixtures thereof, said method comprising:
- mixing the continuous-phase thermoplastic polymer in molten form and the plurality of crosslinked polymer microbeads to disperse the microbeads uniformly throughout the thermoplastic polymer, wherein the thermoplastic polymer has an I.V. of at least 0.50;
- forming a shaped article from the thermoplastic polymer and crosslinked polymer microbead mixture, and
- orienting the article by stretching it in at least one direction, wherein said orienting conditions and the crosslinked polymer microbead character and quantity of use are effective to form voids in the article at least partially bordering said microbeads on either side thereof in the direction(s) of orientation.
- 19. A process according to claim 18, wherein said forming causes sufficient voiding to impart an opacity of 0.78 to 1.0 to the shaped article.
- 20. A process according to claim 11, wherein said forming causes sufficient voiding to impart an opacity of 0.78 to 1.0 to the shaped article.
