Description

The invention relates to a frame for use in a multifunctional piece of furniture, in which the piece of furniture has a first position of use as a cabinet, comprising a series of displaceable shelves arranged one above the other and a fixed shelf arranged above the series, and has a second position of use as a table, wherein the series of shelves are connected horizontally and together with the fixed shelf of the piece of furniture form a top of the table, wherein the fixed shelf is positioned closer to a rear side of the piece of furniture, wherein the frame comprises first mounting elements for mounting the fixed shelf to two or more uprights, wherein the frame comprises second mounting elements for mounting a first side of the series of displaceable shelves and third mounting elements for mounting a second side of the series of displaceable shelves, wherein the frame comprises first displacement means for displacing the series of shelves from the first position of use to the second position of use, wherein the first displacement means comprise a first and second parallelogram construction, each comprising two or more coupled arms, wherein the first displacement means are arranged on the first mounting elements, wherein the second mounting elements are coupled to the arms of the first parallelogram construction and the third mounting elements are coupled to the arms of the second parallelogram construction, and the frame comprises locking means for locking the first displacement means in the second position of use.

The frame according to the preamble is known in the art.

The known frame makes it possible, when using the frame in a cabinet, to move a shelf of the cabinet to a higher position, in which the displaced shelf is level with an upper fixed shelf so that the function of the piece of furniture changed from case to the table.

In the known frame the locking of the displaced shelf takes place by a fixation between two arms of the first parallelogram construction, wherein the fixation takes place by locking the upper arm relative to the second mounting elements by means of a pull rod.

The known frame has a first drawback that the unlocking takes place by means of an operating element which extends from the fixation to the front side of the shelf and causes a reduced aesthetic appearance.

The known frame has the second drawback that the locking takes place between moving parts of the frame, as a result of which clearance can arise, and the top side of the displaced shelf is not exactly level with the top side of the fixed shelf.

The known frame has the third drawback that because the locking takes place at the end of the arms, the extent to which a force on the displaced shelf that is causing a rotation of the arms of the parallelogram constructions is almost at a maximum. This disadvantage has a negative influence on the carrying capacity of the displaced shelf.

The known frame has the fourth drawback that in the second position of use (table) the pull rod can rest against the legs and/or torso of a user. This makes it possible that the pull rod can be pulled out accidentally due to a movement of the user, whereby the frame is unlocked. This can lead to an unsafe situation.

It is the object of the invention to provide a frame according to the preamble which eliminates the above drawbacks or reduces their adverse influence.

To this end, the inventive frame according to the invention is characterized in that the locking means are arranged for locking a lower arm of the parallelogram constructions to at least one of the first mounting elements and are operable by tilting the second and third mounting elements intended for the shelf farthest from the fixed shelf.

The above technical measures have the following effects on the operation of the frame.

Firstly because the locking takes place between one displacing part, namely the lower arm and a fixed part of the frame, namely one of the first mounting elements, the clearance in the frame is greatly reduced. This makes it easier to move and keep the top side of the moved shelf exactly level with the top side of the fixed shelf.

Secondly, because the locking takes place on one of the first mounting elements, the moment of the force exerted on the displaced shelf is greatly reduced compared to the known frame. As a result, the carrying capacity of the displaced shelf of the inventive frame is increased relative to the known frame.

Third, no pull rod is visible and needed, giving the inventive frame a higher aesthetic appearance and more safety.

In a preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, a first end of each of the arms of the parallelogram constructions is pivotally arranged about the first pivot axes to the first mounting elements, and the first pivot axis of the lower arm of each of the parallelogram constructions is displaceable between a first position and a second position wherein the first position is closer to an upright. These measures allow the lower arm to be displaced over a distance determined by the distance between the first and second position. It enables to tilt the second and third mounting elements of the shelf furthest away from the fixed shelf.

In a further preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the first pivot axis of the lower arm is forced into the first position by means of first pretensioning means. These measures have the effect that the second and third mounting elements and the, in use of the frame, attached displaceable shelves remain horizontal during displacement.

Preferably, the first pretensioning means comprise one or more springs.

In an elegant, preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the first mounting means each having a profile and at each of the lower arm of the parallelogram construction a follower element is arranged, in which the profile and follower element are arranged for forcing the first pivot axis of the lower arm to the second position against the action of the first pretensioning means during an upward movement of the lower arm. These measures have the effect that by means of the profile in an automatic manner during displacement of the arms of the parallelogram constructions in a limited area, preferably when in use of the frame the displaceable shelves move to an angle of 90 degrees with the uprights, the follower element makes contact with the profile at a certain position and forces the first pivot axis to the second position against the action of the pretensioning means, after which the second and third mounting elements and the attached displaceable shelves in use of the frame start to tilt slightly.

Preferably the follower element comprises a pin. Thereby, the profile is preferably formed in one side of the first mounting element.

In a more elegant preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the profile comprises a receiving space for receiving the follower element when, in use of the frame, a top side of the displaceable shelves lie in the same plane as a top side of the fixed shelf, in which the follower element moves in the direction of the first position and the follower element can be removed from the receiving space due to the tilt in which the follower element moves towards the second position. These measures have the effect that the second and third mounting elements and the displaceable shelves arranged in use of the frame are locked when the second and third mounting element can be locked from the first position of use in the second position of use, wherein in use of the frame the top side of the displaceable shelves are in the same plane as the top of the fixed shelf. The first pivot axis of the lower arm herein moves towards the first position. The second effect of the measures is that the tilt causes the first pivot axis of the lower arm to move towards the second position and out of the receiving space, whereby the arms of the parallelogram constructions can move downwards. During this downward movement, the follower element is released from the profile and the first pivot shaft will be forced into the first position by the first pretensioning means.

In a practical preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the frame comprises at least two uprights to which the first mounting elements are coupled, wherein at least one upright comprises a first foot and a second foot,

the first foot comprising a housing for a second foot, wherein the second foot is displaceable between a first position in which the second foot is substantially in the housing and a second position in which the second foot is partly out of the housing,

and the frame comprises second displacement means for displacing the second foot in and out of the housing, wherein the second displacement means are arranged for cooperation with the first displacement means. The first and second displacing means cooperate in such a way that, in use of the frame, the second foot comes out of the housing when the piece of furniture moves to the second position of use and the second foot moves into the housing when the piece of furniture moves into the first position of use. These measures prevent the piece of furniture from tipping over when the tabletop is loaded because the total length of the foot of the upright has been increased, however in the first position of use the foot is limited to the length of the first foot.

Preferably, the first foot forms the housing. As a result of this measure, the second foot disappears into the first foot when withdrawing, so that the second foot is hidden from view.

In a further elaboration of the practical preferred embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the second displacement means comprise second pretensioning means for forcing the second foot into the housing and a cable, in which a first end is coupled to the second foot and a second end is coupled to an arm of a parallelogram construction, in which the cable is guided through the frame with guide means, such that during upward movement of the arm the second foot moves out of the housing against the action of the pretensioning means.

These measures have the effect that during operation of the frame the second foot emerges from the housing during an upward movement of the displaceable shelves, because the cable forces the second foot outwards, whereby the compelling force of the cable is greater than the force of the pretensioning means. In addition, the measures have the effect that during operation of the frame the second foot is forced into the housing in a downward movement of the displaceable shelves, because the tension of the cable decreases and the force of the pretensioning means prevails.

Preferably, the second pretensioning means comprise at least one spring.

Preferably, the cable comprises a Bowden cable comprising an outer sheath, wherein a first end of the outer sheath is connected in a secure manner to an outside of the first foot and a second end of the outer sheath is connected in a secure manner to a fourth mounting element, which fourth mounting element is located under the first mounting element near an upright. By using a Bowden cable, mechanical energy or force can be transferred through the movement of the cable relative to the outer sheath. The ends of the outer sheath are preferably provided with adjusting means for adjusting the distance from the ends to the outside of the first foot and to the fourth mounting element. This allows the inner cable to be adjusted to the correct length.

The fourth mounting element is preferably arranged on the first mounting element. As a result, the frame can also be arranged without uprights and can be used, among other things, in an existing piece of furniture.

In an elegant embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the uprights are adjustable in height. In this embodiment, the first mounting elements are attached to a vertically displaceable part of the uprights as well as the fixed shelf.

Preferably the frame according to the invention is provided with a back plate, which first back plate comprises at least two plate sections, wherein an under side of the first plate section is attached to a lower and stationary part of the frame and an upper side of the second plate section is attached to moveable parts of the uprights, such that in operation of the frame the two plate sections move past each other. In operation, the frame will be placed against a vertical structure, such as a wall. The space between the vertical structure and the two plate sections is convenient for storing cables and other electronic equipment. When adjusting the uprights in height, the first back plate also adjusts in height. This ensures that all parts of the cables and the like will stay in the space.

In addition, the frame according to the invention can also be fitted with a second back plate, also comprising at least two plate sections, which are arranged to the frame in a similar way as the two plate sections of the first back plate. The first and second back plate are placed in parallel, defining a space for storing cables and other equipment, so a vertical structure is not needed.

Preferably, the space for storing cables and other electronic equipment can be opened and closed. Therefore the fixed shelf comprises a hinged shelf section, which hinged shelf section forms in operation a closable opening to a space closed in by the at least two plate sections.

The displaceable shelves are connected to first and second parallelogram construction so that upon movement of the shelves, the first and second parallelogram construction will move accordingly.

However during locking and unlocking of the locking means it is crucial that both parallel constructions move exactly in sync, so that the locking means arranged on both parallel constructions operate in sync.

In an more elegant embodiment of the frame according to the invention, the frame comprises synchronization means for synchronizing the displacement of the first and second parallelogram construction (5;6), especially during locking and unlocking of the locking means.

Preferably the synchronization means are arranged to synchronize the rotation of the first pivot axes of the upper arms and/or the first pivot axes of the lower arms.

More preferably the synchronization means comprise a pivotable rod, which rod connects the first pivot axes of the upper arms.

The invention also relates to a multifunctional piece of furniture provided with one or more frames according to the invention, wherein the piece of furniture comprises one or more displaceable shelves, which are each arranged between a second mounting element and a third mounting element of the frame and wherein the piece of furniture comprises a fixed shelf which is arranged on the first mounting elements.

In a first embodiment of the inventive furniture, the furniture comprises a rear wall, which rear wall abuts against a rear side of the displaceable shelves, wherein the furniture further comprises at least one pushing element, which, in the first position of use of the furniture, extends between the arms of the first parallel construction and the arms of the second parallel construction, and is arranged on the rear wall above a displaceable shelf. The push element is preferably beam-shaped. The pushing element ensures that an object placed on a displaceable shelf is pushed to a side remote from the rear wall during transition of the furniture to the first position of use. This reduces the chance that the object will become jammed between a fixed shelf and a displaceable shelf or between two displaceable shelves during the transition from the furniture to the second position of use.

FIG. 3A shows a furniture piece according to the invention provided with the frame 1 in a position of use as a cabinet, in which the frame 1 is in the same position as in FIG. 1A. The piece of furniture is provided with a fixed shelf 201 which are connected to the first mounting elements 2 of the frame 1. In addition, the piece of furniture is provided with displaceable shelves 202 which are connected to the second and third mounting elements 3; 4.

The frame 1 is largely hidden from view by furniture panels.

FIG. 3B shows the piece of furniture of FIG. 3A in a position of use as a table, in which the frame 1 is in the same position as in FIG. 10.

FIG. 4 shows the synchronization means for synchronizing the displacement of the first and second parallelogram construction (5; 6) of the frame 1 according to the invention. The synchronization means comprise a pivotable rod (40), which rod (40) connects the first pivot axes (5C, 6C) of the upper arms (5A; 6B).

The rod (40) ensures that upon locking or unlocking of the frame (1), the locking means arranged on the first and second parallelogram construction (5; 6) operate in sync, thereby improving the level of operating comfort. Without the rod, an operator of the frame (1) would have to keep the displaceable shelves exactly horizontal during locking and unlocking, which (jn practice) is very difficult and increases the risk of objects falling from one of the displaceable shelves.

The frame according to the invention is self-supporting. Because of the inventive locking and unlocking mechanism as described in the claims, the use of knobs and other visible operating means for displacing the displaceable shelves is avoided.

The invention is of course not limited to the described and shown preferred embodiment but extends to any embodiment which falls within the scope of the protection as defined in the claims and viewed in the light of the foregoing description and accompanying figures.
