Claims
- 1. A stable free radical delivery system for a free radical polymerization of a monomer containing olefinic unsaturation which comprises: a pumpable aqueous emulsion of from 0.01 to 100 micron diameter coprecipitated microparticles of a water insoluble free radical initiator with a polymer having a number average molecular weight of between 3,000 and 1,000,000 derived from a monomer having olefinic unsaturation combined in a weight ratio of between about 1:5 and about 1:1.5.
- 2. The delivery system of claim 1 which additionally contains between about 1 and about 100 wt. % of an oxygen- or sulfate- containing surfactant based on initiator.
- 3. The delivery system of claim 2 which contains between about 5 and about 50 wt. % of said surfactant based on said initiator.
- 4. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of initiator to polymer in the coprecipitate is between about 1:3 and about 1:2.5.
- 5. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein the coprecipitated microparticles have a diameter of from about 0.1 to about 50 microns.
- 6. The delivery system of claim 2 wherein the surfactant is an ethoxylated C.sub.8 to C12 alkyl phenol.
- 7. The delivery system of claim 6 wherein the number average molecular weight of said polymer is between about 10,000 and about 500,000.
- 8. The delivery system of claim 1 which contains between about 5 and about 50 parts by weight of water.
- 9. The delivery system of claim 1 having a Brookfield viscosity of from about 6,000 to about 50,000 cps.
- 10. The delivery system of claim 1 for the polymerization of an N-vinyl lactam wherein the polymer in the delivery system is a corresponding vinyl lactam polymer.
- 11. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein the amount of surfactant is between about 5 and about 50 wt. % based on initiator.
