Claims
- 1. A method of making a friction liner for a dry friction device, the liner having a flat, annular general form and comprising a flat annular body of friction material, the method comprising:winding a band of friction material having a predetermined length, of a mat of said friction material whereby to partly form the body, and further comprising, during the winding step, the further step of joining at least part of a band of reinforcing material to the band of friction material and winding the joined bands, the band of reinforcing material having a length sufficient to constitute at least one annular reinforcing zone, wherein the joining step includes bonding together the band of friction material and the at least part of the reinforcing material prior to winding the bands, wherein the bonding step includes heating the two bands prior to winding the two bands.
- 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the at least part of a band of reinforcing material is heat pressed to the band of friction material.
- 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the at least part of a band of reinforcing material is formed from at least a glass fabric.
- 4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the two bands are simultaneously heated and pressed together.
- 5. The method according to claim 1, wherein the winding step forms a tube including the friction and reinforcing materials, the method further comprising dividing the tubes into a plurality of flat annular slices.
- 6. A method of making a friction liner for a dry friction device, the liner having a flat, annular general form and comprising a flat annular body of friction material, the method comprising:winding a band of friction material having a predetermined length, of a mat of said friction material whereby to partly form the body, and further comprising, during the winding step, the further step of joining at least part of a band of reinforcing material to the band of friction material and winding the joined bands, the band of reinforcing material having a length sufficient to constitute at least one annular reinforcing zone, wherein the joining step includes bonding together the band of friction material and the at least part of the reinforcing material prior to winding the bands, and wherein different reinforcing materials are joined to the band of friction material to form at least two different annular reinforcing zones.
- 7. A method of making a friction liner for a dry friction device, the liner having a flat, annular general form and comprising a flat annular body of friction material, the method comprising:winding a band of friction material having a predetermined length, of a mat of said friction material whereby to partly form the body, and further comprising, during the winding step, the further step of joining at least part of a band of reinforcing material to the band of friction material and winding the joined bands, the band of reinforcing material having a length sufficient to constitute at least one annular reinforcing zone, wherein the joining step includes bonding together the band of friction material and the at least part of the reinforcing material prior to winding the bands, and wherein the annular reinforcing zones have different densities.
- 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the densities of the annular reinforcing zones decrease in a radial direction away from the inner surface of the liner.
- 9. A method of making a friction liner for a dry friction device, the liner having a flat, annular general form and comprising a flat annular body of friction material, the method comprising:winding a band of friction material having a predetermined length, of a mat of said friction material whereby to partly form the body, and further comprising, during the winding step, the further step of joining at least part of a band of reinforcing material to the band of friction material and winding the joined bands, the band of reinforcing material having a length sufficient to constitute at least one annular reinforcing zone, wherein the joining step includes heat pressing the at least part of a band of reinforcing material and the band of friction material together prior to winding the bands.
