Claims
- 1. In a front end loader including a refuse storage body having a rear opening, a tailgate pivotally positioned on said storage body for closing said rear opening, and hydraulic motor means for rotating said tailgate from a lowered locked position with respect to said storage body to a raised unlocked position with respect to said storage body for discharge of refuse from said storage body through said rear opening, the improvement comprising:
- lever means pivotally mounted on said storage body;
- said motor means connected to said lever means and to said tailgate;
- a keeper member secured to said tailgate;
- a latching member pivotally mounted on said storage body;
- said latching member being shaped and positioned to engage said keeper member when said tailgate is in a lowered position in engagement with said storage body in locking said tailgate to said storage body;
- means to transmit rotational movement of said lever means to said latching member, and
- said lever member undergoing rotational movement on actuation of said motor means which rotational movement is transmitted to said latching member in moving the latching member out of engagement with said keeper member,
- whereby actuation of said motor means to rotate said tailgate to a raised position first unlocks said tailgate from said storage body.
- 2. The front end loader of claim 1 including:
- stop means to limit the extent of rotation of said lever means;
- said lever means undergoing rotational movement during unlocking of said tailgate from said storage body, and
- said lever means then being immobilized through contact with said stop means during rotation of said tailgate to a raised position with respect to said storage body.
- 3. In a refuse collection apparatus including a refuse storage body having a rear opening and a tailgate positioned adjacent said rear opening for movement between a raised position to expose said opening and movement to a lowered position to close said opening, the improvement comprising:
- said tailgate having a lower member which is downwardly inclined in the direction of said storage body;
- a downwardly projecting contact surface on said storage body adjacent said rear opening;
- said storage body having an inner bottom surface and said lower tailgate member and said contact surface projecting below said bottom surface;
- said downwardly inclined tailgate member and said downwardly projecting contact surface being in contacting relation with said tailgate in a lowered position to form a liquid receiving well positioned below the level and said bottom surface, and
- sealing means positioned between said downwardly inclined tailgate member and said downwardly projecting contact surface defining said liquid receiving well.
- 4. The refuse collection apparatus of claim 3 wherein said lower tailgate surface is downwardly inclined at an angle which facilitates movement of said tailgate to a raised position through upward rotational movement of said tailgate.
- 5. In a combination in refuse equipment,
- a storage body having a hollow interior for holding refuse,
- a tailgate constructed to be attached to the storage body and having a hollow interior to provide an extension of the storage body when attached to the storage body,
- means disposed on at least one of the storage body and the tailgate for providing a sealing relationship between the storage body and the tailgate when the tailgate is attached to the storage body,
- means operatively coupled to the storage body for securing the tailgate on the storage body in pivotable relationship to the storage body,
- latching means disposed on a particular one of the tailgate and the storage body,
- engaging means disposed on the other one of the tailgate and the storage body in co-operative relationship with the latching means to maintain the tailgate in sealed relationship with the storage body, and
- actuating means co-operatively associated with the engaging means and the tailgate and the storage body and operative initially in a first direction to disengage the engaging means from the latching means and thereafter operative in a second direction opposite to the first direction to pivot the tailgate from the storage body about the securing means as a fulcrum.
- 6. In the combination set forth in claim 5,
- the tailgate being shaped at its lower end to define a storage area for the storage of refuse and a well below the storage area for retaining liquid and to provide for a flow of the liquid from the well upon the interruption in the sealed relationship between the tailgate and the storage body as a result of the pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body.
- 7. In the combination set forth in claim 6,
- the actuating means including a hydraulic cylinder and a piston rod attached at one end to one of the tailgate and the storage body and attached at the other end to the other one of the tailgate and the storage body and further including means for introducing hydraulic fluid to the cylinder to control the disengagement of the engaging means from the latching means and the pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body.
- 8. In the combination set forth in claim 6,
- the actuating means including first means constructed to provide initially a disengagement of the engaging means from the latching means in accordance with the movement of the actuating means in the first direction and including stop means operatively coupled to the first means for inhibiting any further operation of the first means upon the disengagement of the engaging means from the latching means and further including second means responsive to the inhibiting action provided by the stop means on the first means for producing an operation of the actuating means in the opposite direction to obtain a pivotal movement of the tailgate relative to the storage body.
- 9. In the combination set forth in claim 8,
- a hydraulic cylinder and a piston rod being included in the first means and the first means further including a locking rod and the locking rod being actuated by a movement of a particular one of the hydraulic cylinder and the piston rod in the first direction and in turn actuating the engaging means to become disengaged from the latching means and the stop means engaging the first means to inhibit any further operation of the first means and the locking rod upon the disengagement of the engaging means from the latching means.
- 10. In combination in refuse equipment,
- a storage body having a hollow interior for holding refuse,
- a tailgate constructed to be attached to the storage body and having a hollow interior to provide an extension of the storage body when attached to the storage body,
- means disposed on at least one of the tailgate and the storage body for providing a seal between the storage body and the tailgate when the storage body and the tailgate are pressed together,
- means disposed on the storage body for holding the tailgate on the storage body in pivotable relationship to the storage body,
- latching means operatively coupled to the tailgate and the storage body for latching the tailgate to the storage body,
- the tailgate being provided with a floor for supporting the refuse in the storage body and with a bottom portion disposed below the floor and shaped to retain liquid refuse and to provide for a disposal of the liquid from the tailgate upon a pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body, and
- actuating means operatively coupled to the tailgate and the storage body and including a hydraulic cylinder attached to a particular one of the tailgate and the storage body and a piston disposed in the cylinder and movable relative to the cylinder and attached to the other one of the tailgate and the storage body, the actuating means being operative initially upon the particular one of the cylinder and the piston for driving the particular one of the cylinder and the piston to disengage the latching means and being subsequently operative upon the other one of the cylinder and the piston for driving the other one of the cylinder and the piston to pivot the tailgate from the storage body.
- 11. In the combination set forth in claim 10,
- the bottom portion of the tailgate assembly being provided with a bottom surface inclined downwardly toward the storage body to provide a runoff of liquid from this bottom portion upon a pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body.
- 12. In the combination set forth in claim 10,
- the sealing means being disposed on the particular one of the storage body and the tailgate and extending along the common surface between the tailgate and the storage body and the upper surface of the bottom portion defining the upper end of the well.
- 13. In the combination set forth in claim 10,
- means engaging the tailgate and the storage body to provide the sealed relationship between the storage body and the tailgate, and
- the actuating means including stop means disposed to limit the movement of the particular one of the cylinder and the piston after the disengagement of the latching means and to provide for the movement thereafter of the other one of the cylinder and the piston.
- 14. In the combination set forth in claim 13,
- the disengaging means and the actuating means including hydraulic means and further including means responsive to the operation of the hydraulic means for initially operating the disengaging means to obtain a disengagement of the tailgate from the storage body and for thereafter inhibiting the operation of the disengaging means and for simultaneously obtaining an operation of the actuating means to produce a pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body and the stop means being disposed at the top of the storage body and the latching means disposed at the bottom of the storage body.
- 15. In combination in refuse equipment,
- a storage body having a hollow interior for holding refuse,
- a tailgate constructed to be attached to the storage body and having a hollow interior constructed and disposed relative to the storage body to constitute an extension of the storage body when attached to the storage body,
- means disposed on the storage body at the top end of the storage body for holding the tailgate assembly on the storage body in pivotable relationship to the storage body,
- latching means operatively coupled to the tailgate and the storage body for latching the tailgate to the storage body, and
- actuating means operatively coupled to the tailgate and the storage body and including a hydraulic cylinder attached to a particular one of the tailgate and the storage body and a piston disposed in the cylinder and movable relative to the cylinder and attached to the other one of the tailgate and the storage body, the actuating means being operative initially upon the particular one of the cylinder and the piston to disengage the latching means and being subsequently operative upon the other one of the cylinder and the piston for driving the other one of the cylinder and the piston to pivot the tailgate from the storage body.
- 16. The combination set forth in claim 15, including,
- stop means operatively associated with the particular one of the cylinder and the piston to limit the initial movement of the particular one of the cylinder and the piston and thereafter to obtain a movement of the other one of the cylinder and the piston.
- 17. The combination set forth in claim 16 wherein
- a lever member is operatively coupled at a first position to the particular one of the cylinder and the piston and at a second position to the storage member to obtain a pivotal movement of the lever member toward the stop means during the movement of the particular one of the cylinder and the piston and wherein the actuating means includes a rod having first and second ends and the rod is operatively coupled at the first and to the lever member and at the second end to the latching means to obtain a release of the latching means during the movement of the lever member toward the stop means.
- 18. The combination set forth in claim 16 wherein
- the latching means includes a first latching member on the storage body and a second latching member on the tailgate and wherein the first and second latching members include detents for engaging each other to lock the latching means and wherein the rod is operatively coupled at its second end to the first latching member to pivot the first latching member from engagement of the detents.
- 19. The combination set forth in claim 18, including,
- sealing means disposed on a particular one of the tailgate and the storage body at the position of engagement with the other one of the storage body and the tailgate for sealing the tailgate and the storage body in the latched relationship of the tailgate and the storage body.
- 20. In combination in refuse equipment,
- a storage body open at its rear end and having top, bottom and side walls for storing refuse,
- a tailgate open at its forward end for communication with the rear end of the storage body and having side walls, a top wall and a floor disposed for communication with the storage body in abutting positions of the tailgate and the storage body,
- the tailgate being constructed to receive and store refuse and to provide for a transfer of refuse into the storage body through the openings in the storage body and the tailgate, and
- a bearing member disposed at the rear end of the storage body and extending to a position below the floor of the storage body and constructed to bear against the tailgate in the abutting relationships of the tailgate and the storage body,
- a well disposed below the floor of the tailgate and the floor of the storage body and defined by extensions of the side walls of the storage body and constructed and disposed relative to the storage body in the abutting relationships of the tailgate and the bearing member of the storage body to store liquid constituting run-off from the refuse in the tailgate, and
- sealing means disposed on at least a particular one of the tailgate and the bearing member of the storage body at the position defining the bearing relationship between the tailgate and the storage body.
- 21. The combination set forth in claim 20 wherein
- a bracing member is provided at the front end of the tailgate to define the front end of the tailgate and the well and to bear against the bearing member in the abutting relationship of the tailgate and the storage body.
- 22. The combination set forth in claim 20 wherein
- the well has a bottom surface inclined downwardly toward the forward end of the tailgate to provide for a flow of the liquid from the well when the tailgate is moved from its position abutting the storage body.
- 23. The combination set forth in claim 22 wherein
- sealing means are provided at the bottom of the well to provide a seal with the tailgate upon an abutting engagement between the tailgate and the storage body.
- 24. The combination set forth in claim 23 wherein
- the tailgate is pivotally coupled to the storage body at the upper rear end of the storage body for pivotal movement of the tailgate toward or away from the storage body and wherein hydraulic means are operatively coupled to the storage body and the tailgate to provide for a pivotal movement of the tailgate relative to the storage body and wherein
- the bottom surface of the well is inclined at an angle to provide for a pivotal movement of the tailgate from the storage body past refuse in the tailgate without imposing an undue strain on the hydraulic means.
