Claims
- 1. A method of peeling fruit having a peel and an edible interior portion comprising the steps of:
- penetrating an electrically conductive element into said interior portion;
- applying a cutter blade to the peel of said fruit;
- moving said blade inward into said fruit and rotating said fruit during blade movement to cause said blade to cut into and remove said peel;
- applying an A.C. electrical signal between said blade and said conductive means so that current flows through said fruit;
- detecting the impedance between said blade and conductive element to determine when said blade has penetrated to said edible interior portion; and
- moving said blade outward upon determining that the edible portion has been penetrated.
- 2. A method as in claim 1 wherein said step of applying includes the steps of applying a high frequency A.C. signal to said cutter blade, and wherein said step of detecting includes detecting the voltage which is produced accordingly at said cutter blade, comparing said detected voltage with a reference voltage and wherein one of said steps of moving includes moving when said reference voltage exceeds said detected voltage and the other step of moving includes moving when said reference voltage is less than said detected voltage.
- 3. A method as in claim 1 wherein said step of penetrating includes impaling said fruit on a grounded spike, and said rotating includes rotating the impaled fruit on said spike, and moving said rotating impaled fruit upward past said cutter blade during peeling.
- 4. A method as in claim 3 including the further step of rotating said cutter blade.
- 5. A method as in claim 3 including the further steps of loading said fruit onto a loader assembly, moving said impaled fruit downward past said cutter blade, and moving the impaled fruit thereafter upward at a rate lower than the rate of downward movement so that the blade peels the fruit.
- 6. A method as in claim 5 including the further step of tilting said impaled fruit away from said cutter blade as said impaled fruit moves upward and peels said fruit.
- 7. A method as in claim 3 wherein said step of rotating the impaled fruit includes the step of rotating at a first speed during the first part of peeling where peel is being removed from the top of the fruit, and at a second lower speed for the rest of the peeling.
- 8. A method as in claim 1 wherein a plurality of blades are each applied to a different fruit peel, moved inward into the peel, the penetration independently detected for each blade and each blade thereafter moved outward.
- 9. A method of peeling fruit as in claim 1 including the further steps of:
- loading a plurality of fruit onto a loader assembly,
- moving a plurality of electrically conductive spikes upward to each pierce a fruit,
- moving each of the impaled fruit downward past a cutter assembly having a cutter blade, and
- moving the impaled fruit upward and each cutter assembly toward an impaled fruit until the blade engages and peels the fruit.
- 10. A method as in claim 1 including the further step of manually aligning the bud axis with the spike as the fruit are loaded onto said loader assembly.
- 11. A method as in claim 1, wherein said step of applying includes the step of applying a signal having a frequency about 1 Megahertz.
