Claims
- 1. A fuel cell, comprising:
a first flow plate; a second flow plate; an electrolyte layer between the first and second flow plates; and a cathode between the first flow plate and the electrolyte layer, wherein the cathode comprises an electrolytic polymer and a non-electrolytic polymer.
- 2. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode further comprises a first catalyst capable of interacting with oxygen and protons to form water.
- 3. The fuel cell of claim 2, wherein the first catalyst comprises carbon-supported platinum.
- 4. The fuel cell of claim 2, wherein the cathode comprises between about 30 weight percent and 70 weight percent of the first catalyst.
- 5. The fuel cell of claim 2, wherein the cathode further comprises a second catalyst capable of interacting with peroxide to form water and oxygen.
- 6. The fuel cell of claim 5, wherein the second catalyst comprises platinum black.
- 7. The fuel cell of claim 5, wherein the cathode comprises between about five weight percent and 30 weight percent of the second catalyst.
- 8. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolytic polymer comprises a sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer.
- 9. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises between about 10 weight percent and 40 weight percent of the electrolytic polymer.
- 10. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the electrolytic material and non-electrolytic material form a substantially homogeneous mixture.
- 11. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the non-electrolytic polymer comprises a fluorine-containing polymer.
- 12. The fuel cell of claim 11, wherein the fluorine containing polymer comprises polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 13. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the cathode comprises less than about 30 weight percent of the non-electrolytic material.
- 14. The fuel cell of claim 1, wherein the non-electrolytic polymer is present in the cathode at a higher concentration at a first cathode surface adjacent to the first flow plate than at a second cathode surface opposite the first cathode surface.
- 15. The fuel cell of claim 5, wherein the electrolytic polymer comprises a sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer, the non-electrolytic polymer comprises polytetrafluoroethylene, the first catalyst comprises carbon-supported platinum, and the second catalyst comprises platinum black.
- 16. The fuel cell of claim 15, wherein the cathode comprises between about 10 weight percent and 40 weight percent of the sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer, less than about 30 weight percent polytetrafluoroethylene, between about 30 weight percent and 70 weight percent carbon-supported platinum, and between about five weight percent and 30 weight percent platinum black.
- 17. The fuel cell of claim 1, further comprising:
an anode between the second flow plate and the electrolyte layer a first gas diffusion layer; and a second gas diffusion layer, wherein the first gas diffusion layer is between the cathode and the first flow plate, and the second gas diffusion layer is between the anode and the second flow plate.
- 18. A fuel cell, comprising:
a first flow plate; a second flow plate; an electrolyte layer between the first and second flow plates; and a cathode between the first flow plate and the electrolyte layer; wherein the cathode comprises a first catalyst that interacts with oxygen and protons to form water, and a second catalyst that interacts with peroxide to form water and oxygen, the second catalyst being different from the first catalyst.
- 19. The fuel cell of claim 18, further comprising an electrolytic polymer and a non-electrolytic polymer.
- 20. The fuel cell of claim 18, wherein the first catalyst comprises carbon-supported platinum and the second catalyst comprises platinum black.
- 21. The fuel cell of claim 20, wherein the electrolytic polymer comprises a sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer and the non-electrolytic polymer comprises polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 22. A fuel cell, comprising:
a first flow plate; a second flow plate; an electrolyte layer between the first and second flow plates; and a cathode between the first flow plate and the electrolyte layer; wherein the cathode comprises a binder material, the binder material being present in the cathode at a higher concentration at a first surface adjacent to the first flow plate than at a second surface opposite the first surface.
- 23. The fuel cell of claim 22, wherein the cathode further comprises a first catalyst that interacts with oxygen and protons to form water, and a second catalyst that interacts with peroxide to form water and oxygen, the second catalyst being different from the first catalyst.
- 24. The fuel cell of claim 22, wherein the binder material comprises a non-electrolytic polymer.
- 25. The fuel cell of claim 22, wherein the cathode further comprises an electrolytic polymer.
- 26. The fuel cell of claim 25, wherein the electrolytic polymer is present in the cathode at a higher concentration at the second surface than at the first surface.
- 27. A fuel cell, comprising:
a first flow plate; a second flow plate; an electrolyte layer between the first and second flow plates; and a region between the first flow plate and the electrolyte layer, the region comprising an electrolytic polymer and a non-electrolytic polymer.
- 28. The fuel cell of claim 27, wherein the region further comprises a first catalyst that interacts with oxygen and protons to form water, and a second catalyst that interacts with peroxide to form water and oxygen, the second catalyst being different from the first catalyst.
- 29. The fuel cell of claim 27, wherein the electrolytic polymer comprises a sulphonated fluorocarbon polymer and the non-electrolytic polymer comprises polytetrafluoroethylene.
- 30. The fuel cell of claim 27, wherein the first catalyst comprises carbon-supported platinum and the second catalyst comprises platinum black.
