Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a major proportion by weight of a liquid hydrocarbon and a minor proportion by weight of an amine or diamine sulphosuccinicate derivative of the following formula:
- [R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, NH]+--[O.sub.3 S--C(R.sup.2, COY)--C(R, R.sup.1)--COX]
- where:
- R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen or a hydrogen-and-carbon containing group,
- R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are selected from hydrogen and a hydrogen-and-carbon containing group of at least 12 carbon atoms, at least one of them being a said hydrogen-and-carbon containing group containing at least 12 carbon atoms,
- X is --OR.sup.6,--NR.sup.7 R.sup.8, or [O--].sup.-+ [NHR.sup.9 R.sup.10 R.sup.11 ] or an alkylene glycol linkage group, and
- Y is --OR.sup.12, --NR.sup.13 R.sup.14, or [--O].sup.-+ [NHR.sup.15 R.sup.16 R.sup.17 ]
- where R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.12, R.sup.13, R.sup.14, R.sup.15 and R.sup.16 are hydrogen or a hydrogen-and-carbon containing group, and R.sup.11 and R.sup.17 are hydrogen-and-carbon containing groups.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1 in which the liquid hydrocarbon is a fuel oil.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the amine salt has the formula ##STR22## wherein R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen or a hydrogen - and carbon-containing group;
- R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are hydrogen or hydrogen - and carbon containing groups containing at least 12 carbon atoms;
- R.sup.5 is a hydrogen-and carbon containing group containing at least 12 carbon atoms;
- X is --OR.sup.6, --NR.sup.7 R.sup.8 or [--O].sup.-+ [NHR.sup.9 R.sup.10 R.sup.11 ] and
- Y is --OR.sup.12, --NR.sup.13 R.sup.14 or [--O].sup.-+ [NHR.sup.15 R.sup.16 R.sup.17 ]
- where R.sup.6, R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.13, R.sup.14, R.sup.15 and R.sup.16 are hydrogen or hydrogen and carbon containing groups, provided R.sup.6 and R.sup.12 cannot both by hydrogen; and R.sup.11 and R.sup.17 are hydrogen - and carbon containing groups;
- provided that R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 cannot all be alkyl groups.
- 4. A composition according to claim 1 wherein at least one of the R groups and X and Y contains at least six carbon atoms.
- 5. A composition according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen.
- 6. A composition according to claim 1 wherein R is a straight or branched chain alkyl group containing 10 to 20 carbon atoms.
- 7. A composition according to claim 1 wherein at least one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is hydrogen.
- 8. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the groups R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 are C.sub.14 to C.sub.22 alkyl groups.
- 9. A composition according to claim 1 wherein X is --OR.sup.6 and Y is --OR.sup.12 and R.sup.6 and R.sup.12 are linear long chain alkyl, containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms.
- 10. A composition according to claim 1 wherein X is --OR.sup.6 and Y is --NR.sup.13 or X is --NR.sup.7 R.sup.8 and Y is --OR.sup.12 in which R.sup.6 and R.sup.12 are linear long chain alkyl containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms and R.sup.7, R.sup.8,l R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are C.sub.14 to C.sub.22 alkyl groups.
- 11. A composition according to claim 1 wherein X is --NR.sup.7 R.sup.8 and Y is --NR.sup.13 R.sup.14 in which R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.13 and R.sup.14 are C.sub.14 to C.sub.22 alkyl groups.
- 12. A composition according to any one of claims 2 to 7, wherein the amine salt has the formula: ##STR23## wherein R.sup.7, R.sup.8, R.sup.15, R.sup.16 and R.sup.17 are C.sub.14 to C.sub.22 alkyl groups.
- 13. A composition according to claim 2 wherein the fuel oil is a distillate fuel oil boiling in the range 120.degree. C. to 450.degree. C. and having a cloud point between -30.degree. C. and 5.degree. C.
- 14. A composition according to claim 1 wherein the amount of amine salt is between 0.0001 and 5.0% by weight based on the weight of fuel oil.
- 15. A composition according to claim 1 containing in addition a polymeric low temperature flow improver for fuel oils.
- 16. A composition according to claim 1 containing in addition a monomeric low temperature flow improver for fuel oils.
- 17. An additive concentrate comprising 10 to 90 wt. % of a solvent and 90 to 10 wt. % of an amine or diamine salt of (a) a sulphosuccinic acid, (b) an ester or diester of a sulphosuccinic acid (c) an amide of a diamide of a sulphosuccinic acid or (d) an ester-amide of a sulphosuccinic acid; and wherein said amine or diamine is selected from primary, secondary or tertiary amines having hydrogen and carbon-and-hydrogen groups containing at least 12 carbon atoms.
- 18. An additive concentrate according to claim 17 also containing a polymeric low temperature flow improver for distillate fuels.
- 19. An additive concentrate according to claim 17 also containing a monomeric low temperature flow improver for distillate fuels.
