Claims
- 1. A corrosion inhibiting aqueous functional fluid composition having high resistance to separation during storage and having a pH in the range of from 8 to 12 comprising (a) water, (b) a surface active, corrosion inhibiting, water soluble or dispersible organic amine salt of a water insoluble carboxylic acid terminated amide having one amide linkage ##STR46## per molecule, and (c) a second surface active agent wherein (b) has the following formula ##STR47## where R is a divalent monoethylenically unsaturated C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 aliphatic radical having two free valences in a cis stereo configuration,
- R.sup.1 is a monovalent organic radical selected from the group consisting of
- (a) a monovalent C.sub.7 to C.sub.10 aliphatic group having at least one methyl or ethyl branch or a monovalent heteroaliphatic group having at least one methyl or ethyl branch and the formula R.sup.3 --OR.sup.4).sub.n (II) where in R.sup.3 is a straight chain or a methyl or ethyl branched C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl radical, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 alkylene radical and n is 1 to 2 when R.sup.2 is hydrogen,
- (b) a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 straight or branched chain aliphatic radical when R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 straight or branched chain monovalent aliphatic radical with the proviso that R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 shall have a combined total of from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and at least one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 shall have at least 5 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 branched or straight chain aliphatic group,
- Z is a nitrogen containing cation having at least one hydrogen attached to the nitrogen, a positive charge equal to x and selected from the group consisting of cations of a water soluble alkanolamine having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group and C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkyl amine,
- x is 1 to 3,
- y is 1 and
- m is 1 to 3.
- 2. A functional fluid composition according to claim 1 further containing (d) a water soluble or dispersible lubricant.
- 3. A functional fluid composition according to claim 1 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen.
- 4. A functional fluid composition according to claim 2 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen.
- 5. A functional fluid composition according to claim 1 wherein Z is a water soluble alkanolamine cation having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group and a positive charge equal to x.
- 6. A functional fluid composition according to claim 2 wherein Z is a water soluble alkanolamine cation having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group and a positive charge equal to x.
- 7. A functional fluid composition according to claim 1 wherein (b) is present in an amount of from 0.002% to 50% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
- 8. A functional fluid composition according to claim 7 wherein (b) is present in an amount of from 0.02% to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
- 9. A functional fluid composition according to claim 2 wherein (b) is present in an amount of from 0.002% to 50% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
- 10. A functional fluid composition according to claim 9 wherein (b) is present in an amount of from 0.02% to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
- 11. A functional fluid composition according to claim 5 wherein the alkanolamine cation is a monoalkanolamine cation, dialkanolamine cation or trialkanolamine cation.
- 12. The method of imparting corrosion inhibiting activity to an aqueous functional fluid composition having at pH in the range of from 8 to 12 comprising the step of mixing together (a) a corrosion inhibiting effective amount of a surface active, corrosion inhibiting, water soluble or dispersible alkali metal, ammonium or organic amine salt of a water insoluble carboxylic acid group terminated amide having one amide linkage ##STR48## per molecule, (b) water and (c) a second surface active agent, wherein (a) has the following formula ##STR49## where R is a divalent radical selected from the group consisting of a monoethylenically unsaturated C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 aliphatic radical having two free valences in a cis stereo configuration, a C.sub.4 to C.sub.8 cycloaliphatic radical or an aromatic radical,
- R.sup.1 is a monovalent organic radical selected from the group of:
- (a) a monovalent C.sub.7 to C.sub.10 aliphatic group having at least one methyl or ethyl branch or a monovalent heteroaliphatic group having at least one methyl or ethyl branch and the formula R.sup.3 --OR.sup.4).sub.n (II) wherein R.sup.3 is a straight chain or a methyl or ethyl branched C.sub.6 to C.sub.12 alkyl radical, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 alkylene radical and n is 1 to 2 when R is the monoethylenically unsaturated C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 aliphatic radical and R.sup.2 is hydrogen,
- (b) a monovalent C.sub.7 to C.sub.10 aliphatic radical having at least one methyl or ethyl branch when R is the cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical and R.sup.2 is hydrogen,
- (c) a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 straight or branched chain aliphatic radical when R is the monoethylenically unsaturated C.sub.2 to C.sub.3 aliphatic radical and R.sup.2 is a C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 straight or branched chain monovalent aliphatic radical with the proviso that R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 shall have a combined total of from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and at least one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 shall have at least 5 carbon atoms, or
- (d) a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.9 straight or branched chain aliphatic group when R is the cycloaliphatic or aromatic group and R.sup.2 is a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.9 straight or branched chain aliphatic group with the proviso that R.sup.1 +R.sup.2 shall have a combined total of from 7 to 10 carbon atoms and at least one of R.sup.1 or R.sup.2 has at least 4 carbon atoms,
- R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a monovalent C.sub.1 to C.sub.11 branched or straight chain aliphatic group,
- Z is an alkali metal cation or a nitrogen containing carbon having at least one hydrogen attached to the nitrogen, a positive charge equal to x and selected from the group consisting of ammonium cation and cations of a water soluble alkanolamine having 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group, C.sub.2 to C.sub.6 alkyl amine, alkyl alkanolamine having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkanol group, heteroaliphatic monoamine in which the heteroatom is oxygen, heteroaliphatic polyamine having oxygen or nitrogen heteroatoms, alkylene diamine having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkylene group, N-alkyl or N-hydroxyalkyl substituted alkylene diamine having 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkylene group, morpholine, N-alkyl substituted morpholine,
- x is 1 to 3
- y is 1 and
- m is 1 to 3.
- 13. The method according to claim 12 further including (d) a water soluble or dispersible lubricant.
- 14. The method according to claim 12 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen.
- 15. The method according to claim 13 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen.
- 16. The method according to claim 12 wherein (a) is used in an amount in the range of from 0.002% to 50% by weight based on the total weight of the functional fluid composition.
- 17. The method according to claim 12 wherein (a) is used in an amount in the range of from 0.002% to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the functional fluid composition.
- 18. The method according to claim 13 wherein (a) is used in an amount in the range of from 0.002% to 50% by weight based on the total weight of the functional fluid composition.
- 19. The method according to claim 18 wherein (a) is used in an amount in the range of from 0.002% to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the functional fluid composition.
