Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a functionalized polymer containing acyl functional groups selected from carboxylic acids, carboxylic esters and thioesters, comprising the step of reacting in admixture:
- (a) at least one polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500, and at least one ethylenic double bond per polymer chain,
- (b) carbon monoxide,
- (c) and a nucleophilic trapping agent selected from the group consisting of water, hydroxy containing compounds and thiol containing compounds, the reaction being conducted in the presence of an acid catalyst having a Hammett acidity of less than about -7.
- 2. The process according to claim 1
- wherein the reaction is further characterized by being conducted in the absence of reliance on transition metal as a catalyst.
- 3. The process according to claim 1, wherein the acyl functional groups are formed at at least 40 mole % of the ethylenic double bonds in the polymer.
- 4. The process according to claim 1, wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent has a pKa of less than 12.
- 5. The process according to claim 1 further comprising the step of preforming a catalyst complex from the catalyst and the nucleophilic trapping agent.
- 6. The process according to claim 1, wherein the process is conducted by adding the catalyst and the nucleophilic trapping agent separately to the admixture.
- 7. The process according to claim 1, wherein the process is conducted at up to 20,000 psig CO.
- 8. The process of claim 1, wherein the process is conducted at from about 500 to about 5,000 psig CO.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein the process is conducted at from about 500 to about 2,000 psig CO.
- 10. The process according to claim 1, further comprising the step of isolating the functionalized polymer from the reacted admixture with at least one fluoride salt.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein the fluoride salt is selected from sodium fluoride and ammonium fluoride.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein the step of isolating functionalized polymer from the reacted admixture is conducted in the presence of at least one additive selected from the group consisting of alcohol, demulsifier and said nucleophilic trapping agent.
- 13. The process according to claim 1, wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent has a pKa of less than 12, and wherein the process further comprises separating the functionalized polymer by the steps of depressurizing and distilling the reacted admixture.
- 14. The process of claim 1, wherein at least 80 mole % of the carbon-carbon double bonds are converted to the acyl functional groups, the acyl functional groups being selected from carboxylic acid and carboxylic esters.
- 15. The process according to claim 1, wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is substituted phenol.
- 16. The process according to claim 1, wherein the polymer comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of alpha-olefin homopolymers, alpha-olefin interpolymers and ethylene alpha-olefin copolymers.
- 17. The process according to claim 16, wherein the polymer comprises ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer derived from ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin having the formula H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHR.sup.4 wherein R.sup.4 is straight chain or branched chain alkyl radical comprising 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 18. The process according to claim 17, wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer comprises polymer chains wherein at least 30% of the chains possess terminal vinylidene unsaturation.
- 19. The process according to claim 18, wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 20,000.
- 20. The process according to claim 19, wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin copolymer comprises ethylene-butene-1 copolymer.
- 21. The process according to claim 1, wherein the Hammett acidity of the acid catalyst is from -8.0 to -11.5.
- 22. The process according to claim 1, wherein the acid catalyst comprises BF.sub.3.
- 23. The process according to claim 22, wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent comprises substituted phenol.
- 24. The process according to claim 22, further comprising the step of preforming a catalyst complex of the acid catalyst and the nucleophilic trapping agent.
- 25. The process according to claim 24, wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent comprises substituted phenol.
