Claims
- 1. Koch functionalized product which is the reaction of:
- (a) at least one polymer having a number average molecular weight of at least about 500 and at least one ethylenic double bond per polymer chain;
- (b) carbon monoxide, and
- (c) a nucleophilic trapping agent.
- 2. Product of claim 1 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is selected from the group consisting of water, hydroxy and thiol group containing compounds.
- 3. Product of claim 2 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is selected from the group consisting of water, monohydric alcohol; polyhydric alcohol and hydroxyl containing aromatic compound.
- 4. Product of claim 3 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is a compound with a pKa at room temperature in water of less than 12.
- 5. Product of claim 4 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is a compound with a pKa at room temperature in water of less than 8.
- 6. Product of claim 3 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is 2,4-disubstituted phenol.
- 7. Product of claim 1 wherein the reaction is conducted (i) in the presence of catalyst and nucleophilic trapping agent or preformed catalyst complex derived from catalyst and nucleophilic trapping agent, said catalyst or catalyst complex having a Hammett acidity of less than about -7, (ii) in the absence of reliance on transition metal as catalyst, and (iii) in a manner and under conditions sufficient to functionalize at least 40 mole % of the polymer ethylenic double bonds with acyl group containing functional groups.
- 8. Product of claim 7 wherein the catalyst is BF.sub.3.
- 9. Product of claim 7 wherein at least 80 mole % of the polymer ethylenic double bonds are functionalized.
- 10. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer is polyalkene having a number average molecular weight of at least about 2,800.
- 11. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer is selected from the group consisting of poly-n-butene, and ethylene-butene copolymer.
- 12. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 1000 to about 20,000.
- 13. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 5,000.
- 14. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer has a number average molecular weight of from about 20,000 to about 200,000.
- 15. Product of claim 7 wherein the catalytic complex is represented by the formula: BF.sub.3. xHOR wherein R is selected from the group consisting of H, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, ##STR26## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrocarbyl, and x is 0.5-5.0.
- 16. Product of claim 7 wherein the catalyst or catalytic complex has a Hammett acidity value of from -8.0 to -11.5.
- 17. Product of claim 1 which has been derivatized with a nucleophilic reactant compound selected from the group consisting of amine, alcohol, amino-alcohol, reactant metal compound, and mixtures thereof.
- 18. Derivatized product of claim 17 adapted for use as a dispersant wherein (i) the unfunctionalized polymer has, dispersant range molecular weight and (ii) the functionalized product has a functionality of from 0.5 to 3.
- 19. Derivatized product of claim 17 adapted for use as a multifunctional viscosity index improver wherein (i) the unfunctionalized polymer has a viscosity modifier range molecular weight and (ii) the functionalized product has a functionality of greater than about 3.
- 20. Product of claim 7 wherein at least 50 mole percent of said acyl groups are attached to a tertiary carbon atom on the polymer.
- 21. Product of claim 1 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer comprises a polymer of ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin having the formula H.sub.2 C.dbd.CHR.sup.4 wherein R.sup.4 is straight chain or branched chain alkyl radical comprising 1 to 18 carbon atoms and wherein at least about 30% of the polymer chains possess terminal vinylidene unsaturation.
- 22. Product of claim 21 wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 20 and about 80 percent.
- 23. Product of claim 7 wherein the unfunctionalized polymer comprises a polymer of ethylene and at least one alpha-olefin having the formula H.sup.2 C.dbd.CHR.sup.4 wherein R.sup.4 is straight chain or branched chain alkyl radical comprising 1 to 18 carbon atoms and wherein at least about 30% of the polymer chains possess terminal vinylidene unsaturation.
- 24. Product of claim 23 wherein the ethylene alpha-olefin polymer has a molar ethylene content of between about 20 and about 80 percent.
- 25. Product of claim 7 wherein the catalyst is BF.sub.3 and the nucleophilic trapping agent is substituted phenol.
- 26. Product of claim 7 wherein the nucleophilic trapping agent is 2,4-disubstituted phenol.
- 27. Derivatized product of claim 17 wherein the nucleophilic reactant compound comprises a polyamine of about 2 to 60 total carbon atoms and of about 3 to 12 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 28. Derivatized product of claim 17 wherein the nucleophilic reactant compound comprises amine and the derivatized product contains amide.
- 29. Product of claim 7 which has been derivatized with a nucleophilic reactant compound selected from the group consisting of amine, alcohol, amino-alcohol, reactant metal compound, and mixtures thereof.
- 30. Derivatized product of claim 29 wherein the nucleophilic reactant compound comprises a polyamine of about 2 to 60 total carbon atoms and of about 3 to 12 nitrogen atoms per molecule.
- 31. Derivatized product of claim 29 wherein the nucleophilic reactant compound comprises amine and the derivatized product contains amide.
