Claims
- 1. A method of making a functionalized diene compound of the formula:
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said 3-bromomethyl-2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide is formed by reacting a compound selected from the group consisting of isoprene and 2,3-(dimethyl)-1, 3-butadiene with sulfur dioxide to form a cyclic sulfone and reacting said cyclic sulfone with NBS.
- 3. The method of claim 2 further comprising the step of heating said 3-bromomethyl-2,5-dihydrothiophene-1,1-dioxide.
- 4. The method of claim 3 comprising the further step of purifying said cyclic sulfone by recrystallization prior to reacting said cyclic sulfone with NBS.
- 5. A method of making a disubstituted functionalized diene compound of the formula:
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein said alkyl-4-haloester is ethyl-4-chlorobutyrate.
- 7. The method of claim 5, wherein said 4-halonitrile is 4-chloro-butyronitrile.
- 8. A compound comprising polymerized functionalized diene monomers selected from the group consisting of 2-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(N,N-diethylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(N,N-di-n-propylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(cyanomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(aminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(carboxymethy)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(acetoxymethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2-(2-alkoxy-2-oxoethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2,3-bis(cyanomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2,3-bis(dialkylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene; 2,3-bis(4-ethoxy-4-4-oxobutyl)-1,3-butadiene; and 2,3-bis(3-cyanopropyl)-1,3-butadiene.
- 9. A composition of matter comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of
poly[2-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(N,N-diethylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(N,N-di-n-propylaminomethyl-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(cyanomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(aminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(acetoxymethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2-(2-alkoxy-2-oxoethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2,3-(cyanomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2,3-bis(dialkylaminomethyl)-1,3-butadiene], poly[2,3-(ethylbutanoate)butadiene], poly[2,3-bis(3-cyanopropyl)-1,3-butadiene].
- 10. The method of claim 1 comprising the further step of polymerizing said functionalized diene compound to produce a functionalized diene polymer.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein said polymer is a copolymer.
- 12. The method of claim 11 wherein said copolymer comprises at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of diene monomers and vinyl monomers.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein said diene monomer is selected from the group consisting of butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, and hexadienes.
- 14. The method of claim 5 comprising the further step of polymerizing said functionalized diene compound to produce a functionalized diene polymer.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein said polymer is a copolymer.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein said copolymer comprises at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of diene monomers and vinyl monomers.
- 17. The method of claim 16 wherein said diene monomer is selected from the group consisting of butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, and hexadienes.
- 18. The method of claim 16 wherein said vinyl monomer is selected from the group consisting of styrene, α-methylstyrene, divinyl benzene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinylpyridine, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid, and acrylic acid.
