Claims
- 1. A sheet material, comprising:
a kraft paper sheet material having a first major surface, a second major surface, and a kraft paper sheet having a fungi growth-inhibiting agent in amounts that result in the kraft paper sheet material being fungi growth resistant.
- 2. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating growth and non-sporulating growth.
- 3. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein: the kraft paper sheet material exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth.
- 4. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 5. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 6. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 7. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 8. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by mineral coating layer; and the laminate is fungi growth resistant.
- 9. The sheet material according to claim 8, wherein:
the mineral coating layer of the laminate contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 10. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by polymeric coating or polymeric film layer; and the laminate is fungi growth resistant.
- 11. The sheet material according to claim 10, wherein:
the polymeric coating or polymeric film layer of the laminate contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 12. The sheet material according to claim 1, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material is a laminate; the kraft paper sheet is encapsulated between polymeric coating or polymeric film layers; and the laminate is fungi growth resistant.
- 13. The sheet material according to claim 12, wherein:
the polymeric coating or polymeric film layers of the laminate contain a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 14. A facing for a faced building insulation assembly, comprising:
a sheet material having a length and a width; the sheet material having a central field portion for overlaying and being bonded to a major surface of an insulation layer; the central field portion of the sheet material having a first outer major surface and a second inner major surface for bonding to a major surface of an insulation layer overlaid by the sheet material; and the central field portion of the sheet material comprising a kraft paper sheet having a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that makes the kraft paper sheet fungi growth resistant.
- 15. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating and non-sporulating growth.
- 16. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth.
- 17. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 18. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 19. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet material; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 20. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 21. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the sheet material has first and second lateral tabs extending for the length of the sheet material that are separated from each other by the central field portion of the sheet material.
- 22. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 21, wherein:
the sheet material has a longitudinally extending fold in the central field portion of the sheet material that extends for the length of the sheet material and is spaced inwardly from each of the lateral tabs; the fold comprises first and second tab segments separably joined together along a fold line that is weakened to facilitate separation of the tab segments.
- 23. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the sheet material is without lateral tabs and has a longitudinally extending line of weakness in the central field portion of the sheet material that extends for the length of the sheet material and is spaced inwardly from lateral edges of the sheet material to facilitate separation by hand of the sheet material along the line of weakness.
- 24. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the kraft paper sheet material forms the outer major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material; and a bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent forms the second inner major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material.
- 25. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of the kraft paper sheet and a bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent; the kraft paper sheet forms the outer major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material; and the bonding layer forms the second inner major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material.
- 26. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a mineral coating layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet that is an intermediate layer, and an inner bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 27. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 26, wherein:
the outer mineral coating layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 28. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a polymeric coating or film layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet that is an intermediate layer, and an inner bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 29. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 28, wherein:
the outer polymeric coating or film layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 30. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a polymeric coating or film layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet, which is an intermediate layer, and an inner polymeric coating or film layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms a heat activated bonding layer and the second inner major surface of the sheet material; and the kraft paper sheet is encapsulated by the polymeric coating or film layers.
- 31. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 30, wherein:
the outer polymeric coating or film layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 32. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, wherein:
the sheet material is a laminate formed from the kraft paper sheet, which is a collapsed tubular kraft paper sheet; the tubular kraft paper sheet has first and second lateral gusset portions; each of the lateral gusset portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet has at least four layers; the tubular kraft paper sheet has first and second central portions extending between and joining the lateral gusset portions; and the first and second central portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet are bonded together to form the central field portion of the sheet material and the first and second lateral gusset portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet are bonded together to form lateral tabs on the sheet material; and the sheet material has a bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent on one surface of the central field portion of the sheet material for bonding the sheet material to an insulation layer.
- 33. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 14, including:
a heat activated bonding layer on the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 34. The facing for a faced building insulation assembly according to claim 33, wherein:
the heat activated bonding layer is an asphalt coating layer.
- 35. A faced building insulation assembly, comprising:
an insulation layer; the insulation layer having a length, a width and a thickness; the insulation layer having first and second major surfaces defined by the length and width of the layer; and a facing comprising a sheet material having a central field portion overlaying the first major surface of the insulation layer; the central field portion of the sheet material having a first outer major surface and a second inner major surface bonded to the first major surface of the insulation layer; the central field portion of the sheet material comprising a kraft paper sheet having a fungi growth inhibiting agent that makes the kraft paper sheet fungi growth resistant; and the facing, as bonded to the insulation layer, being fungi growth resistant.
- 36. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating and non-sporulating growth; and the facing, as bonded to the insulation layer, exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating and non-sporulating growth.
- 37. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth; and the facing, as bonded to the insulation layer, exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth.
- 38. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet includes between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 39. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 200 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 40. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 41. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 42. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the central field portion of the facing is substantially coextensive with the first major surface of the insulation layer and the facing has no preformed lateral tabs.
- 43. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 42, wherein:
the insulation layer is laterally compressible; and the central field portion of the facing is not bonded to the first major surface of the insulation layer adjacent lateral edge portions of the first major surface of the insulation layer so that lateral compression of the insulation layer causes lateral edge portions of the central field portion of the facing to extend laterally beyond the insulation layer.
- 44. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the sheet material has first and second lateral tabs extending for the length of the sheet material that are separated from each other by the central field portion of the sheet material.
- 45. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 44, wherein:
the insulation layer is separable longitudinally by hand at a location spaced inwardly from lateral edge surfaces of the insulation layer; and the sheet material has a longitudinally extending fold in the central field portion of the sheet material that extends for the length of the sheet material, is spaced inwardly from each of the lateral tabs, and is aligned with the separable location in the insulation layer; and the fold comprises first and second tab segments separably joined together along a fold line that is weakened to facilitate separation by hand of the tab segments.
- 46. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the insulation layer is separable longitudinally by hand at a location spaced inwardly from lateral edge surfaces of the insulation layer; and the sheet material has a longitudinally extending line of weakness in the central field portion of the sheet material that extends for the length of the sheet material, is spaced inwardly from lateral edges of the sheet material, and is aligned with the separable location in the insulation layer to facilitate separation by hand of sheet material along the separable location in the insulation layer.
- 47. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet forms the outer major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material; and central field portion of the sheet material is bonded to the first major surface of the insulation layer by a bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 48. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet forms the outer major surface of the central field portion of the sheet material.
- 49. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a mineral coating layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet that is an intermediate layer, and an inner bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 50. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 49, wherein:
the outer mineral coating layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 51. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 50, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a polymeric coating or film layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet that is an intermediate layer, and an inner bonding layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 52. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 51, wherein:
the outer polymeric coating or film layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 53. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the central field portion of the sheet material is a laminate; the laminate consists essentially of a polymeric coating or film layer that forms the first outer major surface of the sheet material, the kraft paper sheet which is an intermediate layer, and an inner polymeric coating or film layer containing a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that forms a heat activated bonding layer and the second inner major surface of the sheet material; and the kraft paper sheet is encapsulated by the polymeric coating or film layers.
- 54. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 53, wherein:
the outer polymeric coating or film layer of the sheet material contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 55. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, wherein:
the sheet material is a laminate formed from the kraft paper sheet which is a collapsed tubular kraft paper sheet; the tubular kraft paper sheet has first and second lateral gusset portions; each of the lateral gusset portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet has at least four layers; the tubular kraft paper sheet has first and second central portions extending between and joining the lateral gusset portions; and the first and second central portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet are bonded together to form the central field portion of the sheet material and the first and second lateral gusset portions of the tubular kraft paper sheet are bonded together to form lateral tabs on the sheet material; and the sheet material has a bonding layer on one surface of the central field portion of the sheet material that contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent and bonds the sheet material to the insulation layer.
- 56. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 35, including:
a heat activated bonding layer on the second inner major surface of the sheet material.
- 57. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 56, wherein:
the heat activated bonding layer is an asphalt coating layer.
- 58. A faced building insulation assembly, comprising:
a facing sheet; the facing sheet having lateral edge portions and a central field portion extending between the lateral edge portions of the facing sheet; the facing sheet comprising a first kraft paper sheet with a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that causes the first kraft paper sheet to be fungi growth resistant; a first reflective sheet; the first reflective sheet having lateral edge portions and a central field portion extending between the lateral edge portions of the first reflective sheet; and the lateral edge portions of the facing sheet being bonded to the lateral edge portions of the first reflective sheet; and the central field portion of the facing sheet being spaced from the central field portion of the first reflective sheet to form an insulating space within the faced insulation assembly.
- 59. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the first kraft paper sheet exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating and non-sporulating growth.
- 60. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the first kraft paper sheet exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth.
- 61. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the first kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the first kraft paper sheet contains between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 62. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the first kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the first kraft paper sheet contains between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 63. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming the first major surface of the first kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming the second major surface of the first kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 64. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming the first major surface of the first kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming the second major surface of the first kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 65. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the facing sheet comprises the first kraft paper sheet laminated to a reflective sheet material.
- 66. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 65, wherein:
the reflective sheet material laminated to the first kraft paper sheet is a foil sheet that opposes the first reflective sheet.
- 67. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 66, wherein:
the first reflective sheet comprises a second kraft paper sheet with a fungi growth-inhibiting agent that causes the second kraft paper sheet to be fungi growth resistant and a reflective sheet material laminated to the second kraft paper sheet.
- 68. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 67, wherein:
the reflective sheet material of the first reflective sheet is a foil sheet.
- 69. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the facing sheet is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by an outer mineral coating layer; and the facing sheet is fungi growth resistant.
- 70. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 69, wherein:
the outer mineral coating layer of the facing sheet contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 71. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the facing sheet is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by an outer polymeric coating or polymeric film layer; and the facing sheet is fungi growth resistant.
- 72. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 71, wherein:
the polymeric coating or polymeric film layer of the facing sheet also contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 73. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the facing sheet is a laminate; the kraft paper sheet is encapsulated between polymeric coating or polymeric film layers; and the facing sheet is fungi growth resistant.
- 74. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 73, wherein:
the polymeric coating or polymeric film layers of the facing sheet also contain a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 75. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet includes a pesticide; and the facing sheet has a flame spread and smoke developed rating equal to or less than 25/50 as measured by the ASTM E 84-01 tunnel test method.
- 76. The faced building insulation assembly according to claim 58, wherein:
the central field portion of the facing sheet has a water vapor permeance rating greater than 1 perm.
- 77. An insulation system for a building wall, floor or ceiling; the wall, floor or ceiling comprising a series of cavities that are each defined in part by spaced apart parallel extending framing members; the insulation system comprising:
unfaced fibrous insulation batts contained within each of the series of cavities; and a vapor retarder covering overlying the series of cavities and secured to the faming members defining the cavities; the vapor retarder covering comprising a kraft paper sheet material having a first major surface, a second major surface, and comprising a kraft paper sheet having a fungi growth-inhibiting agent in amounts that result in the kraft paper sheet being fungi growth resistant.
- 78. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no more than traces of sporulating growth, non-sporulating growth, or both sporulating growth and non-sporulating growth.
- 79. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet exhibits no sporulating growth or non-sporulating growth.
- 80. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:

- 81. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the kraft paper sheet contains between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 82. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 200 and 2000 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 83. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is contained in a first surface coating forming a first major surface of the kraft paper sheet and a second surface coating forming a second major surface of the kraft paper sheet; the fungi growth-inhibiting agent is 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole; and the surface coatings contain between 300 and 700 ppm 2-(4-Thiazolyl) Benzimidazole.
- 84. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by a mineral coating layer; and the laminate is fungi growth resistant.
- 85. The insulation system according to claim 84, wherein:
the mineral coating layer of the laminate contains a fungi growth-inhibiting agent.
- 86. The insulation system according to claim 77, wherein:
the kraft paper sheet material is a laminate; the first major surface of the kraft paper sheet is overlaid by a polymeric coating or polymeric film layer; and the laminate is fungi growth resistant.
