Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use in conjunction with a vessel or furnace containing molten metal, said apparatus containing a heated substance and having an inner plate and an outer plate defining an enclosed space therebetween; spray means extending into the enclosed space for directing a spray of fluid coolant against the inner plate for maintaining an acceptable temperature of said plate; and pump means for positively removing the fluid coolant from the enclosed space after the coolant is sprayed against the inner plate whereby undesired buildup of coolant and undesired buildup of pressure of the coolant in the enclosed space are prevented.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the coolant evacuating means are pump means.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the fluid coolant is water and is sprayed against the inner plate with a volume and pressure to maintain the water in the form of small droplets.
- 4. A method for cooling an apparatus for use in conjunction with a vessel or furnace containing molten metal, said apparatus containing a heated substance and including an inner and outer plate defining an enclose space therebetween and wherein said inner plate is exposed to the heated substance in the apparatus, comprising the steps of (a) spraying a fluid coolant against the inner plate to maintain a desired temperature at the inner plate and (b) using pump means to remove the fluid coolant from the enclosed space after it is sprayed against the inner plate so that undesired buildup of coolant and undesired buildup of pressure of the coolant in the enclosed space are prevented.
- 5. A metod as in claim 4 wherein the fluid coolant is water and the water is sprayed against the inner plate at a pressure and volume to maintain the water in the form of small droplets.
