Claims
- 1. An absorbent garment comprising:
- an absorbent pad; and
- at least one layer of a web, wherein the web comprises a plurality of web members with interstices therebetween and an at least partially cured polymer composition derived from a shear-thinable thixotropic polymer, wherein the web is adapted to be, when the polymer is in the fully cured state:
- substantially impermeable to liquids;
- permeable to selective gases; and
- substantially impermeable to selective biological materials due to the presence in the cured polymer of one or more modifiers capable of interacting with the biological materials.
- 2. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the biological materials are microorganisms.
- 3. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the biological materials are cells.
- 4. The absorbent garment of claim 2, wherein the microorganisms are selected from the group consisting of fungi, bacteria, viruses and protozoa.
- 5. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the modifier is an antimicrobial agent.
- 6. The absorbent garment of claim 5, wherein the antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of antibacterial agents, antiviral agents, antifungal agents and antiprotozoal agents.
- 7. The absorbent garment of claim 6, wherein the antimicrobial agent is selected from the group consisting of isoniazid, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, streptomycin, clofazimine, rifabutin, fluoroquinolones, ofloxacin, sparfloxacin, rifampin, dapsone, tetracycline, doxycyline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ampicillin, amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole, pyrimethamine, sulfadiazine, clindamycin, lincomycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, pentamidine, atovaquone, paromomycin, diclazaril, acyclovir, trifluorouridine, foscarnet, and ganciclovir.
- 8. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the modifier has reactively available sites capable of binding an agent.
- 9. The absorbent garment of claim 8, wherein the modifier is urethane.
- 10. The absorbent garment of claim 9, wherein the agent is iodine.
- 11. The absorbent garment of claim 10, wherein the iodine is reversibly bound to the urethane.
- 12. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the shear-thinable thixotropic polymer was selected from the group consisting of silicones, polyurethanes, fluorosilicones, modified polyurethane silicones, modified silicone polyurethanes, acrylics, and polytetrafluoroethylene or combinations thereof.
- 13. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the web is selected from the group consisting of cotton, wool, silk, jute, linen, rayon, acetate, polyesters, polyethyleneterephthalate, polyamides, nylon, acrylics, olefins, aramids, azlons, glasses, modacrylics, novoloids, nytrils, rayons, sarans, spandex, vinal, vinyon, foams, films, foamed sheets, natural leathers, split hydes, synthetic leathers, vinyl, urethane, filtration membranes, polysulfones, polyimides, nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate, cellulose, and regenerated cellulose or combinations thereof.
- 14. The absorbent garment of claim 1, wherein the liquid is bodily fluid.
- 15. The absorbent garment of claim 14, wherein the bodily fluid is selected from the group consisting of saliva, gingival secretions, cerebrospinal fluid, gastrointestinal fluid, mucous, urogenital secretions, synovial fluid, blood, serum, plasma, urine, cystic fluid, lymph fluid, ascites, pleural effusion, interstitial fluid, intracellular fluid, ocular fluids, seminal fluid, mammary secretions, vitreal fluid, and nasal secretions.
- 16. The absorbent garment of claim 14, wherein the bodily fluid is blood.
- 17. The absorbent garment of claim 14, wherein the bodily fluid is urine.
- 18. The absorbent garment of claims 1, wherein the garment is an incontinent brief.
- 19. The absorbent garment of claim 18, wherein the incontinent brief further contains a shedding shield that is positioned next to the skin of the wearer.
- 20. The absorbent garment of claim 19, wherein the absorbent pad in the incontinent brief is under the shedding shield.
- 21. The absorbent garment of claim 20, wherein the absorbent pad is larger than the shedding shield.
- 22. The absorbent garment of claim 20, wherein the absorbent pad is smaller than the shedding shield.
- 23. The absorbent garment of claim 18, wherein there are a plurality of absorbent pads.
