Claims
- 1. A connector assembly for insertion into an external bore formed in a housing, said bore having an internal circumferential groove formed therein, said connector comprising:
- an elongate tubular male insert having a longitudinal end adapted to be received in said bore, wherein the end of said male insert has a contoured external surface defining an external longitudinally-fixed circumferential locking flange, the locking flange having a first side and a second side;
- a resilient locking element adjacent to the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange prior to insertion of said male insert into the bore, said locking element being expandable over the locking flange of said male insert upon longitudinal displacement of said locking element relative to the end of said male insert; and
- guide means for radially collapsing said locking element about the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange until said locking element is displaced into the internal circumferential groove of said bore by the first side of the locking flange during insertion of said male insert into said bore.
- 2. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said bore radially collapses said locking element about the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange when said locking element is displaced into said bore by the first side of the locking flange, said bore radially collapsing said locking element about the end of said male insert until said locking element is further displaced by the locking flange into the internal groove of said bore.
- 3. The connector assembly of claim 2, wherein, once said locking element is displaced by the first side of the locking flange of said male insert into the internal groove of said bore, and upon further insertion of said male insert into said bore, said locking element expands over the locking flange of said male insert and thereafter radially contracts about the end of said male insert proximate to the second side of the locking flange thereby to lock said male insert within said bore.
- 4. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein an axial end of said guide means abuts said housing during displacement of said locking element into the said bore by the locking flange of said male insert.
- 5. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said locking element is continuous so as to encircle the end of said male element.
- 6. The connector assembly of claim 5, wherein said locking element is a garter spring.
- 7. The connector assembly of claim 6, wherein an axial end of said guide abuts said housing during displacement of said locking element into the internal groove of said bore by the locking flange of said male insert.
- 8. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said guide means is carried with said male insert prior to insertion of said male insert into said bore.
- 9. A connector assembly for insertion into an external bore formed in a housing, said bore having an internal circumferential groove formed therein, said connector comprising:
- an elongate tubular male insert having a longitudinal end adapted to be received in said bore, wherein the end of said male insert has a contoured external surface defining an external circumferential locking flange;
- a resilient locking element about the contoured surface of said male insert, said locking element expanding over the locking flange thereof when said locking element is displaced into the internal groove of said bore; and
- a guide cooperating with said bore to radially collapse said locking element about the contoured surface of said male insert until said locking element is displaced into the internal groove of said bore by the locking flange of said male insert.
- 10. The connector assembly of claim 9, wherein said locking element is continuous so as to encircle the end of said male element.
- 11. The connector assembly of claim 10, wherein said locking element is a garter spring.
- 12. The connector assembly of claim 9, wherein said guide is carried with said male insert prior to insertion of said male insert into said bore.
- 13. A connector assembly for insertion into an external bore formed in a housing, said bore having an internal circumferential groove formed therein, said connector comprising:
- an elongate tubular male insert having a longitudinal end adapted to be received in said bore, wherein the end of said male insert has a contoured external surface defining an external longitudinally-fixed circumferential locking flange, the locking flange having a first side and a second side;
- a resilient locking element adjacent to the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange prior to insertion of said male insert into the bore, said locking element being expandable over the locking flange of said male insert upon longitudinal displacement of said locking element relative to the end of said male insert; and
- an annular guide encompassing the end of said male insert prior to insertion of said male insert into said bore, said guide slidably receiving and radially collapsing said locking element about the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange until said locking element is displaced into the internal circumferential groove of said bore by the first side of the locking flange during insertion of said male insert said bore.
- 14. The connector assembly of claim 13, wherein said bore radially collapses said locking element about the end of said male insert proximate to the first side of the locking flange when said locking element is displaced into said bore by the first side of the locking flange, said bore radially collapsing said locking element about the end of said male insert until said locking element is further displaced by the locking flange into the internal groove of said bore.
- 15. The connector assembly of claim 14, wherein, once said locking element is displaced by the first side of the locking flange of said male insert into the internal groove of said bore, and upon further insertion of said male insert into said bore, said locking element expands over the locking flange of said male insert and thereafter radially contracts about the end of said male insert proximate to the second side of the locking flange thereby to lock said male insert within said bore.
- 16. The connector assembly of claim 13, wherein an axial end of said guide abuts said housing during displacement of said locking element into the said bore by the locking flange of said male insert.
- 17. The connector assembly of claim 13, wherein said locking element is continuous so as to encircle the end of said male element.
- 18. The connector assembly of claim 17, wherein said locking element is a garter spring.
- 19. The connector assembly of claim 13, wherein said guide is carried with said male insert prior to insertion of said male insert into said bore.
