Claims
- 1. A gas generator for an air bag, comprising:a housing including a top plate, a bottom plate, and a circumferential outer wall having gas discharge ports; gas generating means provided within said housing for generating combustion gas; coolant means provided within said housing for cooling at least one of the combustion gas and combustion residues contained in the combustion gas by a heat exchange; and a contact preventing member being a substantially cylindrical plane shape including a coolant means accommodating portion formed in a lower side thereof for attaching to an upper end of said coolant means, said contact preventing member including an inner convex portion and an outer convex portion formed in an upper side thereof corresponding to the coolant means accommodating portion and being provided between the upper end of said coolant means and an inner surface of the top plate such that the inner concave portion and the outer concave portion contact with the inner surface of the top for defining a first space therebetween.
- 2. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 1, wherein said contact preventing member is provided between the upper end and the inner surface for preventing said coolant means from directly contacting the top plate such that said contact preventing member restricts a heat conduction from said coolant means to the top plate after activation of said gas generator.
- 3. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 2, wherein said contact preventing member restricts the heat conduction such that a maximum surface temperature of the top plate is lower than a maximum surface temperature of the bottom plate, after activation of said gas generator.
- 4. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 1, wherein said contact preventing member includes a short-pass preventing portion that covers an inner circumferential surface of the upper end of said coolant means for preventing the combustion gas from passing between the upper end of said coolant means and the inner surface of the top plate.
- 5. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 4, wherein said short-pass preventing portion is formed such that said short-pass preventing portion extends in a lower direction from the inner convex portion for contacting the inner circumferential surface.
- 6. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 4 wherein said short-pass preventing portion is integrally formed with said contact preventing member.
- 7. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 4, wherein said contact preventing member includes a positioning portion that extends in an inner radial direction with respect to said housing from said short-pass preventing portion for fitting around an outer surface of an inner cylindrical member provided within said housing.
- 8. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 7, wherein said short-pass preventing portion and said positioning portion are formed integrally with said contact preventing member.
- 9. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 1, wherein said coolant means is formed by a multi-layer wire mesh body.
- 10. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 1, wherein a second space is defined by an outer circumferential surface of said coolant means and an inner surface of the circumferential outer wall for restricting a direct heat conduction from said coolant means to the circumferential outer wall, after activation of said gas generator
- 11. A gas generator for an air bag according to claim 1, wherein said contact preventing member is provided between the upper end and the inner surface such that a lower side of said contact preventing member corresponding to the inner convex portion is away from the upper end of said coolant means for defining a second space between a lower side of said contact preventing member and a upper end of said coolant means.
- 12. A method of restricting an increase in a temperature of a housing of a gas generator after an activation of the gas generator, the housing further including a top plate, a bottom plate, and a circumferential outer wall having gas discharge ports, comprising:providing gas generating means within the housing for generating combustion gas upon combustion thereof; providing coolant means within the housing for cooling at least one of the combustion gas and combustion residues contained in the combustion gas by a heat exchange; providing a contact preventing member between an upper end of the coolant means and an inner surface of the top plate such that a coolant means accommodating portion formed in a lower side of the contact preventing member attaches to the upper end of the coolant means and an inner convex portion and an outer convex portion formed in an upper side of the contact preventing member corresponding to the coolant means accommodating portion contact with the inner surface of the top plate for defining a first space therebetween; preventing the coolant means from directly contacting the top plate by the contact preventing member; and restricting a heat conduction form the coolant means to the top plate by the contact preventing member after activation of said gas generator.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein said step of restricting the heat conduction further includes the step of,restricting the heat conduction such that a maximum surface temperature of the top plate is lower than a maximum surface temperature of the bottom plate, after activation of said gas generator.
- 14. The method of claim 12, wherein said step of providing the contact preventing member further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member including a short-pass preventing portion that covers an inner circumferential surface of the upper end of the coolant means for preventing the combustion gas from passing between the upper end of the coolant means and the inner surface of the top plate.
- 15. The method of clam 14, wherein said step of providing the contact preventing member further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member that extends in a lower direction from the inner convex portion for contacting the inner circumferential surface.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein said step of providing the contact preventing member further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member including the short-pass prevention portion formed integrally with the contact preventing member.
- 17. The method of claim 14, wherein said step of providing the contact preventing means further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member including a positioning portion that extends, from the shot-pass preventing portion, in an inner radial direction with respect to the housing for fits around an outer surface of an inner cylindrical member provided within the housing.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said step of providing the contact preventing means further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member formed integrally with the short-pass preventing portion and the positioning porion.
- 19. The method of claim 12, wherein said step of providing the coolant means further includes the step of,providing the coolant means formed by a multi-layer wire mesh body.
- 20. The method of claim 12, further comprising:defining, by an outer circumferential surface of the coolant means and an inner surface of the circumferential outer wall, a second space for restricting a direct heat conduction from the coolant means to the circumferential outer wall after activation of the gas generator.
- 21. The method of claim 12, wherein said step of providing the contact preventing member further includes the step of,providing the contact preventing member between the upper end and the inner surface such that a lower side of the contact preventing member corresponding to the inner convex portion is away from the upper end of said coolant means for defining a second space between a lower side of said contact preventing and a upper end of said coolant means.
