Claims
- 1. A method of mixing two gases together in controlled proportions, comprising the steps of:
- controlling the supply of a first gas to a mixing chamber by providing a first orifice of a first variable area for supplying the first gas to the mixing chamber, the first variable area comprising a series of orifice areas corresponding to a geometrical progression having a predetermined progression ratio;
- controlling the supply of a second gas to a mixing chamber by providing a second orifice of a second variable area for supplying the second gas to the mixing chamber, the second variable area comprising a series of orifice areas corresponding to the same geometrical progression as the first orifice area;
- controlling the ratio between the areas of the first and second orifices according to a selected mixing ratio; and
- varying the sizes of the two orifices during mixing in response to change in pressure drop across the two orifices while maintaining the same preset mixing ratio.
- 2. The method as claimed in claim 1, further including the steps of connecting a first chamber to the supply of the first gas, connecting a second chamber to the supply of the second gas, slidably mounting a first piston in a first passageway connecting the first chamber to the mixing chamber, slidably mounting a second piston in a second passageway connecting the second chamber to the mixing chamber, the step of providing a first orifice of a first variable area comprising movably mounting a first valve member in the first chamber for movement between a closed position closing an opening in the first piston for supply of the first gas to the mixing chamber and a second position defining a maximum flow area orifice between the valve member and opening, the step of providing a second orifice of a second variable area comprising movably mounting a second valve member in the second chamber for movement between a closed position closing an opening in the second piston for supply of the second gas to the mixing chamber and a second position defining a maximum flow area orifice between the valve member and opening, and connecting the first and second pistons together for movement in response to variations in pressure drop across the first and second pistons, the step of varying the sizes of the two orifices comprising moving the first and second pistons together in response to variations in pressure drop to vary the spacing between each valve member and the respective piston opening so as to vary the respective flow areas defined between the valve members and respective piston openings while maintaining the selected area ratio.
- 3. The method as claimed in claim 2, wherein the step of controlling the ratio between the areas of the first and second orifices comprises moving the first and second valve members into predetermined first and second positions relative to the openings in the first and second pistons, respectively, the first and second positions corresponding to a selected area ratio.
