Claims
- 1. A gas-operated automatic weapon comprising:
- a receiver frame;
- a barrel, having a bore and chamber formed therein and secured to said receiver frame;
- a bolt assembly slidably mounted within said receiver frame and having a feed mechanism feeding cartridges into said receiver frame through a breech opening formed in said receiver frame and eject spent cartridge casings from said receiver frame;
- actuating means for causing said bolt assembly to move rearwardly to allow said cartridges to be fed into said receiver frame into a position aligned with said bolt assembly and further causing said bolt assembly to move so as to ram a cartridge into said chamber;
- means locking said bolt in position with said cartridge seated in said firing chamber, said means comprising a relatively movable bolt latching element, said latching element relatively movable with respect to said bolt so as in a first position to lock said bolt against sliding movement in said receiver frame and in a second position to allow said sliding movement of said bolt assembly in said receiver frame, means for momentarily releasing the pressure exerted on said bolt by said compressed bolt extraction spring during unlatching of said bolt assembly by movement of said relatively movable bolt latching element;
- means locking said bolt during firing of said fire arm and releasing said bolt for said rearward movement after firing of said round;
- trigger means selectively operable to cause a cartridge positioned in said chamber to be fired;
- said means for actuating said bolt including dual power cylinder means including spaced piston and cylinder assemblies located on either side of said bolt and including means for communicating gas pressure existing in said barrel bore to one side of said piston to create a force on said pistons by said gas pressure generated by the bore by firing of said cartridge;
- said means further including a bolt extraction spring compressed by each of said pistons and means for retracting said bolt by said compressed bolt extraction spring after firing of said cartridge and unlocking of said bolt assembly;
- whereby said forces exerted by said piston assemblies on said gas pressure and said means for compressing said spring and operating said bolt are reduced and balanced by said plural points of force application created by said dual power cylinder arrangement.
- 2. The weapon according to claim 1 wherein said bolt locking means comprises relatively movable bolt latching element, said latching element relatively movable with respect to said bolt so as in a first position to lock said bolt against sliding movement in said receiver frame and in a second position to allow said sliding movement of said bolt assembly in said receiver frame, means for momentarily releasing the pressure exerted on said bolt by said compressed bolt extraction spring during unlatching of said bolt assembly by movement of said relatively movable bolt latching element.
- 3. The weapon according to claim 2 wherein said means for momentarily releasing said pressure comprises a high energy spring mounted in series with said bolt extraction spring, said high energy spring being compressed by said power cylinder assemblies but substantially released during a reduction in pressure in said bore caused by movement of the ammunition bullet out of said barrel bore, said release of said high energy spring momentarily releasing the pressure exerted on said bolt assembly by said bolt extraction spring.
- 4. The weapon according to claim 3 wherein said high energy spring comprises a Belleville spring arranged concentrically with said bolt extraction spring and wherein said bolt extraction spring comprises a flat helical spring adapted to be fully collapsed by movement of said dual power cylinder assembly, and wherein further movement of said power cylinder assembly induces compression of said high energy spring.
- 5. The weapon according to claim 4 further including inertia mass interposed between said bolt retraction and said high energy Belleville spring whereby said momentary release of said pressure is extended by acceleration and deceleration of said inertia mass.
- 6. In an automatic weapon of the type having a bolt aseembly reciprocable within a receiver frame to extract and ram successive cartridges fed into a weapon barrel chamber, and further including a bolt locking mechanism adapted to lock said bolt assembly in position with a cartridge in said chamber, said bolt assembly being operated by gas pressure developed in said weapon barrel bore and exerted on the bolt extraction spring compressed during firing of the automatic weapon with a subsequent bolt extraction by the extension of the bolt extraction spring, the improvement comprising:
- means for momentarily releasing the spring pressure exerted on said bolt assembly immediately after firing of said ammunition round so as to reduce the pressure exerted on said bolt locking means during bolt unlocking.
- 7. The weapon according to claim 6 wherein said means comprises a high energy spring mounted so as to be compressed by said bolt extraction spring upon full compression of said bolt extraction spring whereby the drop in gas pressure in said bore allows said high energy spring to relax and momentarily reduce the pressure on said bolt assembly by said bolt extraction spring.
- 8. The weapon according to claim 7 further including an inertia mass interposed between said bolt extraction spring and said high energy spring, whereby the duration of said unloading is increased by the inertia of said inertia mass.
- 9. The weapon according to claim 8 wherein said bolt extraction spring comprises a flat section spring which may be fully compressed to provide a transmitted force created by said gas pressure into said high energy spring.
- 10. A gas-operated automatic weapon comprising:
- a receiver frame;
- a barrel, having a bore and chamber formed therein and secured to said receiver frame;
- a bolt assembly slidably mounted within said receiver frame and having a feed mechanism feeding cartridges into said receiver frame through a breech opening formed in said receiver frame and eject spent cartridge casings from said receiver frame;
- actuating means for causing said bolt assembly to move rearwardly to allow said cartridges to be fed into said receiver frame into a position aligned with said bolt assembly and further causing said bolt assembly to move so as to ram a cartridge into said chamber;
- means locking said bolt in position with said cartridge seated in said firing chamber;
- means locking said bolt during firing of said fire arm and releasing said bolt for said rearward movement after firing of said round;
- trigger means selectively operable to cause a cartridge positioned in said chamber to be fired;
- said means for actuating said bolt including dual power cylinder means including spaced piston and cylinder assemblies located on either side of said bolt and including means for communicating gas pressure existing in said barrel bore to one side of said piston to create a force on said pistons by said gas pressure generated by the bore by firing of said cartridge;
- said means further including a bolt extraction spring and a carriage drivingly engaged by said pistons of both of said dual power cylinder arrangements, said carriage being slidable in engagement with said bolt extraction spring whereby movement of said piston compresses said bolt extraction spring and means for retracting said bolt by said compressed bolt extraction spring after firing of said cartridge and unlocking of said bolt assembly;
- carriage return springs located along an axis aligned with the axis of said power cylinder means and compressed by said dual piston power arrangement simultaneously with compression of said bolt extraction spring;
- a portion of said bolt passing through a central openin formed in said carriage, said bolt being formed with a shoulder engaging said carriage on the chamber side of said carriage;
- means catching said carriage after a predetermined extent of travel rearwardly caused by movement of said pistons under said gas pressure, said catch means securing said carriage against forward movement during expansion of said compressed bolt extraction spring acting to retract said bolt, said catch means comprising a leaf spring positioned along side said receiver frame, said leaf spring having a catch tab formed thereon and extending into said receiver frame at a position adapted to catch said carriage as said carriage slides rearwardly in said receiver frame;
- said leaf spring comprising a portion of said feed means, said means including means displacing said leaf spring laterally outward upon release thereof by said bolt shoulder impacting said carriage, said leaf spring including a driving engagement with said feed means during said lateral movement;
- whereby said forces exerted by said piston assemblies on said gas pressure and said means for compressing said spring and operating said bolt are reduced and balanced by said plural points of force application created by said dual power cylinder arrangement.
- 11. The weapon according to claim 10 wherein said leaf spring is formed with curved portions and said bolt assembly includes an element adapted to engage said curved portions of said leaf spring and create a spring force in a direction to urge said leaf spring laterally outward from said receiver frame during rearward movement of said bolt assembly and further including means to urge said leaf spring back into position against said receiver frame during forward ramming movement of said bolt assembly.
