Claims
- 1. A radial motor adapted to be powered by a source of pressurized gas comprising:
- a unitary cylinder block having a hub portion generally concentric with an axis and defining a central opening, a plurality of hollow cylinder portions extending radially outward from said hub portion and a closed axial end face portion at one side of said hub portion, said end face portion having a valve drive opening extending therethrough;
- means for closing the tops of said cylinder portions;
- a piston in each cylinder portion;
- a master rod member having a central bore disposed in said central opening and connecting rod means securing said pistons to said master rod member whereby said master rod member orbits in a circular path about said axis as said pistons move within said cylinders;
- a support member at the opposite side of said hub portion of said block, said support member having a bore extending therethrough;
- a crankshaft having one end journaled in said bore portion of said support member and is opposite end extending through and journaled in said bore of said master rod member;
- backplate means secured to said end face portion and defining with said end face portion a plurality of passages, each passage leading to and in fluid communication with a cylinder;
- commutator valving means within said backplate means driven by the rotation of said crankshaft to close and then open said passages in a circular, sequential manner;
- said end face portion having an exposed outer surface opposite said central opening, said outer surface having a plurality of recessed channels formed therein, each channel extending radially outwardly to the top of a cylindrical portion from a point on a circle concentric with said valve drive opening;
- said backplate means including a spider plate adapted to be mounted in sealing engagement with said outer surface, said spider plate having a base portion and a plurality of leg portions spaced in equal circular increments about said base portion extending radially outwardly to a distance equal to the periphery of said unitary cylinder block, said spider plate having a central drive opening concentric with and equal to said drive valve opening, said spider plate further having a plurality of axial feed passages extending therethrough and spaced equally about a circle concentric with said central drive opening, said spider plate additionally having a plurality of ribs extending from one side of said spider plate, each rib extending from an axial inlet opening radially outwardly to the end of a leg portion, each rib adapted to be sealed in a channel to define said passages.
- 2. The motor of claim 1 wherein each piston has formed integrally therewith a flange extending in a direction towards the top of said cylinder portions, said flange being formed of a flexible material and being adapted to be forced in sealing engagement against the wall of said cylinder portion by fluid acting on said piston.
- 3. The motor of claim 1 wherein said closing means includes a plurality of cap members, each cap sealing the top opening of a cylinder portion and having a cap axial passage in fluid communication with the interior of a cylinder portion and a corresponding passage, the diameters of said axial feed passages, said passages and said cap axial passages being approximately equal.
- 4. The motor of claim 3 wherein said cap members and said cylinder block are formed from a plastic material, and further including a plastic prestress member having a preconfigured inner surface defining an opening, said preconfigured inner surface in tight engagement with the top of each cap member for prestressing said cylinder portions and said hub portion.
- 5. The motor of claim 3 wherein:
- said end plate means further includes a valve cover member adapted to be mounted to said spider plate, said valve cover member having a blind bore opening to said spider plate and concentric with said valve drive opening and a main gas inlet passage communicating with the closed portion of said blind bore;
- means for sealing said blind bore to said spider plate;
- a cylindrical commutator valve member rotatably disposed within said blind bore, said valve member having a noncircular, blind opening at one side thereof;
- a valve drive shaft having a noncircular shaped end adapted to be received in said noncircular blind opening for rotatably driving said commutator valve member, an intermediate cylindrical portion adapted to be journaled in said central drive opening and said valve drive opening, and an offset drive portion depending from said intermediate portion having a drive opening receiving said opposite end of said crankshaft.
- 6. The motor of claim 5 wherein said commutator valve member has an arcuate slot of predetermined length on one side of said valve member adapted to be in fluid communication with a predetermined number of axial inlet passages, said commutator valve member having at least one axial inlet valve passage extending from the opposite side of said commutator valve member in fluid communication with said slot, said axial inlet valve passage being approximately equal in diameter to said axial inlet passages and said passages.
