Claims
- 1. A process for separating a component from a gaseous mixture which comprises contacting the mixture with particles of a partially pyrolyzed macroporous synthetic polymer produced by the controlled thermal degradation of a macroporous synthetic polymer containing a carbon-fixing moiety and derived from one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, or monomers which are condensed to yield macroporous polymers, or mixtures thereof, which partially pyrolyzed macroporous synthetic polymer contains: (a) at least 85% by weight of carbon, (b) multimodal pore distribution with macropores ranging in size from about 50 A to about 100,000 A in average critical dimension and (c) a carbon to hydrogen atom ratio of between about 1.5 : 1 and 20 : 1.
- 2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is an aromatic hydrocarbon.
- 3. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is a chlorinated hydrocarbon.
- 4. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is a ketone.
- 5. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is ethyl acrylate.
- 6. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is toluene.
- 7. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is methyl chloroform.
- 8. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is cumene.
- 9. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is carbon tetrachloride.
- 10. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is chloroform.
- 11. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the separated component is vinyl chloride.
- 12. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the partially pyrolyzed macroporous synthetic polymer contains pores of molecular sieve size of about 2 - 10 A as well as macropores of larger sizes.
