Claims
- 1. An environmentally sealed electrical connector receptacle comprising:
- a) a socket capable of receiving an electrical plug and forming an electrical connection therewith upon insertion of the plug into the socket, wherein said socket has a rear opening;
- b) an environmental sealant disposed within the socket;
- c) an elastomeric diaphragm mounted to the socket opposite a side of the socket capable of receiving the plug, wherein sealant displaced by insertion of the plug can flow through said rear socket opening to said diaphragm and cause said diaphragm to expand so as to provide sufficient force opposing displacement to seal the inserted plug;
- d) at least one passage within the diaphragm; and
- e) at least one wire passing through said at least one passage and connecting with said socket.
- 2. The environmentally sealed electrical connection receptacle of claim 1, wherein said environmental sealant comprises silicone gel.
- 3. The environmentally sealed electrical connection receptacle of claim 2, wherein said silicone gel has a Voland hardness from about 15 grams to about 40 grams and an elongation of at least 100%, and wherein said elastomeric diaphragm comprises Santoprene rubber having a Shore A hardness from about 45 grams to about 75 grams.
- 4. The environmentally sealed electrical connection receptacle of claim 3, wherein said socket further comprises at least one electrical contact having a front portion coated with a silicone rubber adhesive, said contact connected to said at least one wire.
- 5. An environmentally sealed electrical connector comprising:
- a) a socket including at least one electrical conductor, said socket adapted to insertably receive a plug through a first opening, said socket also having a second opening;
- b) an environmental sealant at least partially filling said socket, whereby said sealant is at least partially displaced from said socket through said second opening when said plug is inserted into said socket; and
- c) an elastomeric means, coupled to said socket via said second opening, for containing said sealant when said plug is inserted into said socket.
- 6. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said elastomeric containment means further urges said displaced sealant to return within said socket when said plug is removed.
- 7. The electrical connector of claim 5, further including an expansion slot in communication with said socket.
- 8. The electrical connector of claim 7, further including a displacement inert within said expansion slot.
- 9. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said at least one conductor comprises a contact partially coated with a coating forming a bond with both said contact and said sealant, wherein said coating bonds to said contact and to said sealant more tightly than said sealant adheres directly to said contact.
- 10. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said environmental sealant has a Voland hardness of about 15 grams to about 50 grams and an elongation of at least 100%.
- 11. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said environmental sealant has a Voland hardness of about 25 grams to about 35 grams.
- 12. The electrical connector of claim 11, wherein said environmental sealant has a tack of about 12 grams to about 22 grams.
- 13. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said environmental sealant comprises material selected from the group of aliphatic urethanes and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrenes.
- 14. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said environmental sealant comprises silicone gel.
- 15. The electrical connector of claim 14, wherein said at least one conductor comprises a contact partially coated with a coating forming a bond with both said contact and said environmental sealant, wherein said coating is a silicone rubber adhesive.
- 16. The electrical connector of claim 5, wherein said at least one conductor comprises a plurality of conductors including a plurality of wires passing through a conductor aperture in said containment means, wherein said containment means and said sealant environmentally seal said conductor aperture.
- 17. The electrical connection of claim 5, wherein said elastomeric containment means comprises an elastomeric containment diaphragm having a Shore A hardness from about 45 grams to about 75 grams.
- 18. An environmentally sealed RJ11 connector comprising:
- a) an RJ11 socket including at least one socket electrical contact, said socket adapted to insertably receive an RJ11 plug;
- b) an adhesive coating covering a front portion of said socket electrical contact;
- c) an environmental sealant disposed within said RJ11 socket, said environmental sealant covering and forming a bond with said adhesive coating; and
- d) an RJ11 plug including at least one plug electrical conductor, said RJ11 plug inserted into said RJ11 socket, said plug electrical conductor forming an electrical connection with said socket electrical contact, wherein said environmental sealant environmentally seals said connection.
- 19. The environmentally sealed RJ11 connector of claim 18, wherein said sealant has a Voland gram hardness of about 15 grams to about 50 grams and an elongation of at least 100%.
- 20. An environmentally sealed electrical connector comprising:
- a) a socket including at least one electrical conductor, said socket adapted to insertably receive a plug; and
- b) an environmental sealant at least partially filling said socket, wherein said at least one conductor comprises a contact at least partially coated with a coating forming a bond with both said contact and said sealant, wherein said coating bonds said contact and sealant more tightly than said sealant adheres directly to said contact.
- 21. The environmentally sealed electrical connector of claim 20, wherein said sealant has a Voland gram hardness of about 15 grams to about 50 grams and an elongation of at least 100%.
