Claims
- 1. A method of generating foam from a mixture of foam-forming materials in a structure having a preformed configuration, said foam-forming materials being dispensed from a plurality of stationary foam gun heads having valve means therein for controlling the discharge of the foam-forming materials therefrom, said method comprising:
- (a) conveying said structure along a horizontal path underneath said stationary foam gun heads with said foam gun heads having outlets being spaced transversely across said path;
- (b) horizontally sensing the presence of said structure at a point upstream of said foam gun heads by a first sensing means, wherein said first sensing means includes a horizontally directed photocell and means spaced therefrom for directing a light beam thereto horizontally and transversely to said path, said structure breaking the light beam when passing thereby;
- (c) vertically sensing along a vertical line through a point upstream of each of said gun head outlets the presence of at least a portion of said structure by a plurality of second sensing means spaced from each other in a direction transverse to said horizontal path, each one of said second sensing means being associated with one foam gun head;
- (d) opening the valve means of at least one of said foam gun heads in response to said first sensing means sensing the presence of the structure and the second sensing means being associated with said at least one of said foam gun heads and sensing the presence of said structure;
- (e) closing the valve means of said at least one of said foam gun heads in response to its associated second sensing means sensing the absence of said structure; and
- (f) reopening said closed valve means when said horizontal photocell and said associated second sensing means again sense the presence of said structure, thereby automatically compensating for narrow width or openings of said structure.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein each said second sensing means includes a vertically directed photocell and means spaced therefrom for directing a light beam in a vertical direction, said beam adapted to be broken when the bottom portion of the structure passes thereby.
- 3. The method of claim 1 further including flushing each said gun head with a solvent for a period of time in reponse to said first sensing means sensing the absence of structure after the structure has passed thereby.
- 4. The method of claim 3 further including purging each foam gun head with a purging gas for a period of time in response to said first sensing means sensing the absence of structure after said structure has passed thereby, said purging gas time period beginning at least after said solvent time period has begun and terminating after said solvent time period has terminated.
- 5. The method claim 4 further including raising a trough to surround said foam gun head outlets in response to said first sensing means sensing the absence of said structure after said structure has passed thereby, said trough being raised before the start of said solvent time periods, and lowering said trough after said air purge time period has expired.
