Claims
- 1. A light transmitting device comprising a body of optical glass consisting of from 0.1 to 5 mole percent GeO.sub.2, from 5 to 40 mole percent B.sub.2 O.sub.3 and remainder SiO.sub.2.
- 2. A light guide for transmitting light along a transmission path comprising a first glass which is the core in contact with a second glass which is the cladding along the transmission path CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the first glass is composed of from 8 mole percent to 40 mole percent GeO.sub.2, remainder SiO.sub.2, and the second glass is composed of from 5 mole percent to 40 mole percent B.sub.2 O.sub.3, from 0.1 to 5 mole percent GeO.sub.2, remainder SiO.sub.2, so that the first glass and the second glass differ in index of refraction by more than one half percent and differ in coefficient of linear expansion by less than 20 percent.
- 3. A light guide of claim 2 in which the approximate composition of the first glass is 15 mole percent GeO.sub.2, remainder SiO.sub.2 and the approximate composition of the second glass is 12.5 mole percent B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 2.5 mole percent GeO.sub.2, remainder SiO.sub.2.
