Claims
- 1. A method for improving the life of a ceramic die comprising the step of:
applying a glaze to the forming surface, the glaze having a coefficient of thermal expansion, (CTE) substantially matching that coefficient of thermal expansion for the ceramic die.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the glaze is applied by plasma spraying.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the die's forming surface is preheated.
- 4. The method of claim 1 wherein the glaze includes cordierite.
- 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the cordierite includes minor additions of TiO2 to adjust the CTE.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the glaze is crystalline.
- 7. The method of claim 6 wherein the method includes using a toughening glaze on the forming surface of the ceramic die, the glaze having a coefficient of thermal expansion that closely matches that of the ceramic die.
- 8. A ceramic die coated with a toughening cordierite glaze at least on the die's forming surface to enhance the life of the die in SPF operations.
- 9. A glazed ceramic die including a glaze on the forming surface made in accordance with claim 1.
- 10. The die of claim 9 wherein the glaze includes crystalline cordierite.
