Claims
- 1. A DC-operable glow discharge lamp comprising:
- a light transmitting envelope containing a noble gas fill material;
- a pair of electrodes disposed in said envelope and comprising at least one anode electrode and at least one cathode electrode, said anode electrode having only a coating of a getter material disposed on substantially the entire length thereof, said getter material being located in the path of negatively charged electrons and ions collected upon said anode whereby impurity gases negatively ionized within said envelope are electrically drawn to said getter material for rapid removal; and
- lead-in wires coupled to the electrodes, extending through and hermetically sealed within said envelope, and for coupling a power source to the electrodes for establishing a lamp discharge therebetween.
- 2. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 1 wherein said envelope also contains mercury and emits ultraviolet radiation upon excitation.
- 3. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 2 including a phosphor coating on an inner surface of said envelope and which emits visible light upon absorption of ultraviolet radiation.
- 4. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 3 wherein said noble gas fill material comprises a mixture of neon and argon.
- 5. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 4 wherein the mixture is comprised of on the order of 99.5% neon and 0.5% argon.
- 6. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 1 wherein said electrodes are disposed in a side-by-side relationship.
- 7. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 1 wherein the getter material comprises an electropositive metal slurry.
- 8. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 7 wherein said slurry is a zirconium slurry.
- 9. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 8 wherein the slurry comprises zirconium dispersed in alcohol.
- 10. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 7 wherein said cathode electrode includes a coating of an emissive material, a getter material comprising a slurry more diluted than the slurry on said anode electrode is disposed over said emissive material.
- 11. The glow discharge lamp as set forth in claim 1 wherein said getter material is selected from the group comprising zirconium, titanium and hafnium.
