Claims
- 1. Apparatus for modulating power supplied to a load comprising electrical energization means for energizing the load, a thermally responsive switch having a thermally responsive element, the switch being connectable to the electrical energization means, the thermally responsive switch having contacts which are normally closed but which will open when the thermally responsive element is subjected to preselected temperature conditions, heating means having a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance operatively connected to the thermally responsive switch by a thermal coupling, means to energize the heating means when the contacts of the thermally responsive switch are closed so that the thermally responsive switch will cycle on and off, a cut-off heater operatively connected to the PTC heating means by a thermal coupling, and means to energize the cut-off heater to cause the thermally responsive switch to be maintained in its contacts open configuration after a selected number of on-off cycles of the thermally responsive switch have been completed.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1 including a second thermally responsive switch having a thermally responsive element, the second switch being connectable to the electrical energization means, the second switch having contacts which are normally closed but which will open when the thermally responsive element of the second switch is subjected to preselected temperature conditions, second heating means having a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance operatively connected to the second thermally responsive switch by a thermal coupling, means to energize the second heating means concurrently with the first heating means, and means to operatively connect the cut-off heater to the second thermally responsive switch by a thermal coupling.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the cut-off heater is disposed intermediate the first and second heater elements.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the first and second heater means and the cut-off heater are all disposed on an electrically and thermally conductive member.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the first and second PTC heating means have approximately the same base resistance and the cut-off heater has a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance with a different base resistance.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the base resistance of the first and second heating means is between approximately 4 to 6 ohms and the base resistance of the cut-off heater is between approximately 15 to 20 ohms.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which one of the first and second PTC heating means has a base resistance between approximately 4 to 6 ohms and the cut-off heater has a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance and has a base resistance between approximately 15 to 20 ohms.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 2 in which the first and second heating means has a generally constant base resistance at temperatures below an anomaly with the first and second heater means having approximately the same base resistance and the cut-off heater having a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance with a base resistance between approximately 15 to 20 ohms.
