Claims
- 1. A method of making a phthalate-free plasticizer for polymer resins comprising esterifying glycerin with a mixture of at least two different carboxylic acids in the presence of a catalyst to form a mixture of different triesters of glycerin, at least one of which meets the formula CH2(OOR1)CH(OOR2)CH2(OOR3), wherein at least two of R1, R2, and R3 are different alkyl or aryl groups; with the proviso that said mixture of different triesters of glycerin comprises at least two selected from the group consisting of glyceryl bis(2-ethyl hexanoate) benzoate, glyceryl bis(2-ethyl hexanoate) benzoate, glyceryl bisbenzoate 2-ethyl hexanoate, and glyceryl bisbenzoate 2-ethyl hexanoate.
- 2. The method of making a phthalate-free plasticizer according to claim 1 wherein said esterifying step is accomplished by heating said glycerin and said mixture of acids in the presence of said catalyst.
- 3. The method of making a phthalate-free plasticizer according to claim 2 wherein said glycerin, said mixture of acids, and said catalyst are heated under a partial vacuum.
- 4. The method of making a phthalate-free plasticizer according to claim 3 wherein said catalyst comprises zirconium acetate.
- 5. The method of making a phthalate-free plasticizer according to claim 1, wherein said each of said acids contains up to about 11 carbons atoms per molecule.
