Description
FIELD AND BACKGROUND OF THE DISCLOSURE

This disclosure is directed to system for playing a card game involving golf, golf tournaments, and other competitive events. The disclosure is also directed to a method for playing the card game involving golf, golf tournaments, and other competitive events.

Many games have been developed that involve various elements. Some of these games are entirely self-contained and are games of chance and/or skill of the players. For example, a traditional 52-card deck is used to play many games such as poker, solitaire, gin, and blackjack. These games revolve entirely around the activity and play of the cards themselves and the immediate players of the game. There is no outside influence or contribution towards these card games.

Other types of games are commonly known as table top games, as the play of the games revolve include various pieces, cards, dice, and other components influence the play of these table top games. For example, table top games may include Parcheesi® by Parker Brothers, Monopoly® by Hasbro, chess, and checkers. As with card games, these games revolve entirely around the activity and play of the cards themselves and the immediate players of the game. Similar to card games, these games are also self-contained without outside influence or contribution.

What is needed then is a golf brackets game that includes cards and a game mat and also allows for outside influence and contribution to affect the play of the game. Such a game incorporates live action of a sporting event, for example, a golf tournament, with cards and a game mat to provide a more engaging, unpredictable, and unrepeatable game experience.

DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE

As embodied and broadly described herein, the present disclosure is directed to a golf tournament bracket game.

The following examples illustrate embodiments of the disclosure, but should not be viewed as limiting the scope of the disclosure.

Referring generally to the Drawings, one embodiment of the disclosure is directed to a golf brackets game directed toward a golf tournament. For example, the Professional Golf Association Tour (PGA) or the LIV Golf League.

Using the Masters' Tournament as an example, the tournament consists of four rounds of 18 holes of golf each. After 36 holes of play, a cut-off score is determined to reduce the size of the field of golfers. Typically, the top 50 places make the cut and are allowed to continue in the tournament.

Next, an additional 36 holes of golf are played in a final round by the remaining 50 golfers. If there is not a winner at the end of the fourth round, the tied golfers then play a sudden death playoff. The sudden death playoff begins on the 18th hole, followed by the 10th hole, and is repeated until one player remains. It should be understood that this format is only exemplary and the game of the present disclosure may be played with different rules and formats, even differing from the actual golf tournament.

In another embodiment of the present disclosure, the game is played using a single-elimination match play format (or “sudden death”).

Golfer Selection: In a match play tournament, golfers are typically seeded based on their performance or ranking, but other methods could be used, such as random seeding. The number of golfers depends on the tournament format, but it could range from a small field to a larger bracket.

Bracket Formation: The golfers are arranged in a bracket 10 (see FIG. 1), typically using a seeded format. The top-seeded golfer faces the lowest-seeded golfer, the second-seeded golfer faces the second-lowest seeded golfer, etc. This arrangement ensures that the strongest golfers theoretically meet each other in later rounds.

Match Assignments: Each match consists of one golfer competing against another, with the winner advancing to the next round and the loser being eliminated from the tournament.

Match Format: In match play, each hole is a separate contest. The golfer or golf team with the lowest score on a given hole wins that hole. The winner of the match is determined by the number of holes won.

Halved Holes: If both golfers tie on a hole, it is considered halved, and neither golfer wins the hole. The overall score remains the same, and the golfers proceed to the next hole.

Match Duration: Match play matches can vary in length depending on the number of holes played. Common match lengths include 18 holes, 36 holes, or even fewer holes for shorter matches.

Advancement: The winner of each match advances to the next round of the tournament, while the loser is eliminated from further competition (i.e., “sudden death”).

Tiebreakers: In the event of a tie after the scheduled number of holes, the match may proceed to extra holes (often referred to as sudden death) to determine a winner. Alternatively, some tournaments may have specific tiebreaker rules in place, such as a playoff format or a predetermined method for breaking ties.

Final Rounds: As matches progress, the field narrows, and players compete in subsequent rounds until reaching the final match, where the tournament champion is determined.

Winner: Following the final match, the golfer with the lowest score is declared the tournament winner.

Overall, single elimination match play adds a strategic and competitive element to golf tournaments, as players must focus on defeating their opponents one match at a time to advance and ultimately claim victory. However, the game of the present invention may be used with other types of golf tournaments and tournament formats, the present examples are therefore not limiting.

According to the golf tournament bracket game of the present disclosure, one embodiment is directed to a single-elimination match play bracket format 10 as shown in FIG. 1. In this example, a golf round of 18 holes is played by two players using game mat 20 (see FIG. 2). Each hole is described by its hole number, par number, and length of hole (in yards). An example illustration of each hole may also be included for added realism.

For example, two players of the golf tournament bracket game play head-to-head games involving the teams of the actual Master's Tournament. The two players divide the golfers between themselves, with one player taking, for example, the odd numbered golfers in the bracket (i.e., 1, 3, 5, etc.) and the other player taking the even numbered golfers (i.e., 2, 4, 6, etc.). Alternatively, the two players may decide teams using other processes, including using the golf tournament bracket game cards, a coin flip, a die or dice, or other chance-involving method. This approach can negate the perceived advantage of one player receiving the number 1 seed in the bracket, for example.

Using the card decks included in the golf tournament bracket game, both players play head-to head rounds of golf using their respective bracket selections. Each card game consists of a single round of single elimination match play, though other formats are contemplated. (It should be understood that the golf tournament bracket game can accommodate a golf tournament consisting of four rounds, or matches or rounds of other lengths and intervals).

In embodiments, a unique card deck of 40 cards (though other size card decks are contemplated) is assigned to each seed, for example, the 1 seed card deck contains a different card deck than the 16 seed (see FIGS. 4-5). The 1 seed card deck contains the most possible scoring outcomes and the least amount of non-scoring outcomes. Conversely, the 16 seed card deck contains the least possible scoring outcomes and the most possible non-scoring outcomes. For example, and without limitation, the 1 seed card deck may have more albatross, eagle, and birdie scoring opportunities than the 16 seed card deck and less non-scoring opportunities such as a snowman, triple-bogey, double-bogey, or bogey. For larger or smaller tournaments, respectively sized card decks may be used (e.g., 64 card decks for a 64-golfer tournament).

The percentages of scoring and scoring outcomes for each seed (1 seed through 16 seed) is based upon a table 30, an example of which is shown in FIG. 3.

As a result, the outcomes of each of the matches generally follows these averages, but allows for the occasional “upset” (e.g., a 16 seed defeating a 1 seed), similar to actual tournament results. As each round is played, the winning golfers retain their respective seed decks—the 1 seed deck is used by the 1 seed as long as that team is victorious. It should be understood that other data may be used with or substituted for the data illustrated in FIG. 2. Other data could include random data to create additional dynamic game play, such as using a computer software application, or “app” to improve the level of dynamic game play.

A Front Nine and a Back Nine result in 18 “holes” for both players. The holes are similar to (or exactly as) holes in an actual golf match or tournament. For example, the first hole of the card game has the same attributes as the first hole of the Masters' tournament golf course. In other embodiments, other courses may be used, either actual or fictitious. Each player draws a card from the card deck. The first player draw may be determined by roll of a die, flip of a coin, or depend upon the previous result of a hole. Typically, the player whose golfer had the lowest score will start the next hole first. That player then places the card face up on the game mat as shown in exemplary FIG. 1. Each card of the deck represents a single hole of a round of golf. One side of each card may include a decorative logo or design of the golf tournament bracket card game, for example. The other side of each card includes the playing side of the card including (at least) a possible outcome of the round. The playing sides of the card deck may include a number of possible golf outcomes, including but not limited to: “Chip-In—Par 0”, “Eagle!—−2 strokes”, “Birdie!—−1 stroke,” etc. Examples of playing cards are shown in FIGS. 3-4 and an exemplary table of the point value of each playing card is shown in FIG. 2.

According to another embodiment of the present disclosure, after completion of the first match round, the two players begin the second match round of the bracket (i.e., the round of 8 in this embodiment). The second match round consists of the winners of the first-round matches. The two players play 4 games resulting in two winners. To illustrate the second-round configuration, the winner of the 1 seed vs. 16 seed match plays the winner of the 8 seed vs. 9 seed match (Match 9), the winner of the 5 seed vs. 12 seed match plays the winner of the 6 seed vs. 13 seed match (Match 10), the winner of the 4 seed vs. 11 seed match plays the winner of the 3 seed vs. 14 seed match (Match 11), and the winner of the 7 seed vs. 10 seed match plays the winner of the 2 seed vs. 15 seed match (Match 12).

The third round of the bracket (i.e., the round of four) consists of 2 matches between the winners of the second round. To illustrate the third-round configuration, the winner of Match 9 plays the winner of Match 10 and the winner of Match 11 plays the winner of Match 12.

Once the winners of the third round have been determined, a final match (i.e., the final round) is played between the two remaining golfers—the winners of Match 13 and Match 14—to determine the bracket champion (i.e., the ultimate Golf Brackets Baby! Winner).

In addition to the head-to-head play of the two players in the four rounds of the bracket, there is another aspect of the golf bracket game of the present disclosure—the Sheet of Integrity (SI). The SI brings a prognostication element to the golf tournament bracket game. Before the start of play (e.g., before the four rounds of the bracket are played by the two players or before the actual golf tournament is played), both players fill out a SI forecasting how each player believes the upcoming bracket will turn out. A separate SI can be filled out for each bracket or a single SI can be filled out including all four brackets. The SI provides for additional game play in that a winner for each round of each bracket can be determined, and an eventual overall SI can be determined for all four brackets of the tournament (or other sized tournaments as well). Therefore, the SI provides at least two levels of entertainment-predicting the winner of the golf tournament card game and the winner of the actual golf tournament.

The scoring of the SI can be determined (in one embodiment) under the following criteria: for the round of 16 matches—1 point for each correctly predicted outcome; for the round of 8 matches—2 points for each correctly predicted outcome; for the round of 4 matches—4 points for each correctly predicted outcome; and for the championship match—8 points for each correctly predicted outcome—for a total of 32 possible points. In the event of a tie between the two players, both will also be asked to record on the SI their forecasted total strokes scored by both golfers in the championship game (for example, 72 or 74 strokes for an 18-hole round of golf).

In one embodiment of the disclosure, an example of the rules to the golf tournament game are as follows:

Object

Predict the outcome of a full Golf Brackets Baby! tournament with the highest level of accuracy against your opponents. For large groups (ideally 16 total people), the additional option to assign each player their own seed (and coordinating deck) adds another exciting option to be the bracket winner that defeats all other golfers in match play.

Contents

    • 1 Game Mat to be used for head-to-head play for each individual game to be played out on (See FIG. 1).

    • 16 Card Decks (each consisting of 13 cards), identified on the backs of the cards with the appropriate golf round result (See FIG. 2).

    • 1 Pad of 50 Sheet of Integrity sheets for each player to fill out ahead of each Tournament, making their predictions ahead of the games being played.

Set Up
For 2 PLAYERS:

Each player fills out their own Sheet of Integrity to make a “prediction” as to how the overall Golf Brackets Baby! Tournament will play out (and/or the actual tournament). The two players play out each individual match as head-to-head matchups against each other, to play out the tournament in its entirety. The winner of the golf tournament game is determined by which player has most accurately predicted the outcomes of the golf matches and filled out a bracket that most closely resembles the outcome of the tournament (and/or the actual tournament). Points are assigned with each round of the tournament that increase in value as the tournament rounds progress:

    • Round of 16: each match accurately predicted is worth ONE POINT.
    • Round of 8: each match accurately predicted is worth TWO POINTS.
    • Round 4: each match accurately predicted is worth FOUR POINTS.
    • Championship Round: accurately predicting the Championship Match winner is worth EIGHT POINTS.

For 3 PLAYERS to 15 PLAYERS:

Just like the 2-player option, each player will fill out their own sheet of integrity to make a “prediction” as to how the overall Golf Brackets Baby!—the tournament will play out. Depending on how many players there are, you can alternate match-ups for the head-to-head games against each other, pick, or assign initial seeds (using a similar methodology to the 16 Player game option), and the players who lose the matches in the initial round(s), are re-seeded in the next round to play against the players who won in the previous round. Play out the tournament and determine a winner by who predicts the most accurate bracket outcome (using the same scoring system outlined above for the 2 Players set-up). If one player happens to “win-out” during the game-play (i.e., the player is a #1 Seed—as an example—and wins every game in each round straight on through the tournament to win the championship), the players could elect to play out a final game between the person who predicted the bracket outcomes most accurately against the person who won the game-play tournament, to determine an ULTIMATE GOLF BRACKETS BABY! CHAMPION. If there is a tie, sudden death is detailed below.

For 16 PLAYERS:

For 16 players, each represented by a seed deck, playing head-to-head games until a Brackets Baby! Champion is crowned.

To determine seeds: Take 1 “Par! 0 stroke” card from each of the 16 different seed decks and place all of the game cards face-up on the game mat (so that only the “Par! 0 stroke” artwork is face up and the Seed # backs are face-down). Mix the 16 cards up on the game mat, so that no player can know which card has which seed number on the back. Each player selects one card, and the Seed on the back of that card that the player selects is their assigned Seed for the tournament.

Once all seeds have been assigned, each player will fill out a sheet of integrity prior to playing the games, to make their predictions of how the tournament will play out.

The 16 players will play out each game, via head-to-head game play, eliminating 1 seed/player with each game that is played, the winner moves on to the next round. Whichever player wins the tournament is the Golf Brackets Baby! Champion. Whichever player most accurately predicts the outcome of the golf tournament with their sheet of integrity prediction is the co-champion. If there is a tie, an exemplary sudden death feature is requiring the two co-champions play a sudden death game, using the #8 seed deck and #9 seed deck (again, using the “Par! 0 stroke” cards, face-up on the game mat to determine who is assigned which deck) in a head-to-head match-up to determine an ULTIMATE GOLF BRACKETS BABY! CHAMPION.

Optional game play: Each Golf Brackets Baby! game set includes 16 seeds/decks. However, multiple game sets can be utilized to play a larger tournament with more golfers as desired.

Game Play

In this embodiment of the disclosure, each individual game of the Golf Brackets Baby! Tournament consists of two halves, a Front Nine and a Back Nine, in which the players shuffle their respective card decks, place 1 card from their shuffled deck onto their assigned spots on the golf game mat face down.

Front Nine:

Each player has 9 regular “holes” similar to actual golf holes, represented by the cards that have been drawn and placed face down on the golf game mat.

After the first player is chosen using the typical rules of golf, each player flips over their respective card for each hole of the Front Nine. The cumulative total of each player's nine cards represents that player's golf score for the Front Nine (e.g., 36 strokes). At the end of the half, each player should record the score on their own sheet of integrity, then put the cards back into the respective decks.

Back Nine:

The second half of the match is played identically to the first half: nine cards, one each per holes 10-18. The seed card decks should be shuffled with all 13 cards put back into each seed deck and shuffled. Players follow the rules of golf, lowest score in last hole goes first as in the Front Nine and then the total stroke value of the cards from the Back Nine are recorded and added to the Front Nine stroke value. Whichever player/seed has lowest cumulative strokes at the end of the Back Nine, is the winner of the match and moves on to the next round of the golf tournament. The player/seed with most points loses and is out of the tournament at that point (with the exception that the player will still be eligible to win with their sheet of integrity prediction remaining intact for the entirety of the golf tournament.

Brackets Logic

In this embodiment of the disclosure, the game play for the Golf Brackets Baby! Tournament follows the same logic as most any 16-team/seed tournament format. The sheet of integrity details the format of what golfers play head-to-head against each other in the Round of 16, with the winners of each round advancing to play the winner of the golfer that is next in their assigned bracket (i.e., the winner of the #1 Seed vs. #16 Seed match goes on to face the winner of the #8 Seed vs. #9 Seed match, and so on).

In another embodiment, the game play is as follows.

Object

Predict the outcome of a full Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION tournament with the highest level of accuracy against your opponents. For large groups (ideally 16 total people), the additional option to assign each player their own Seed (and coordinating deck) adds another exciting option to be the Bracket Winner that defeats all other teams in game play.

    • 1 Game Mat to be used for head-to-head play for each individual game to be played out on.

    • 16 Card Decks (each consisting of 40 cards), identified on the backs of the cards with the appropriate seed #

    • Website Instructions: log-in instructions to create a profile at www.bracketsbaby.com to make predictions online ahead of tournament(s) played

Set Up

For 2 PLAYERS: each player will fill out their own online SHEET OF INTEGRITY to make a “Prediction” as to how the overall Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION Tournament will play out. The two players will play out each individual game as head-to-head matchups against each other, to play out the tournament in its entirety. The Winner of the game is determined by who has most accurately predicted the outcomes of the games and filled out a bracket that most closely resembles the actual outcome of the tournament. Points are assigned with each round of the tournament that increase in value as the tournament rounds progress:

    • Round of 16: each game accurately predicted is worth ONE POINT
    • Round of 8: each game accurately predicted is worth TWO POINTS
    • Round 4: each game accurately predicted is worth FOUR POINTS
    • Championship Round: accurately predicting the Championship Game winner is worth EIGHT POINTS

For 3 PLAYERS to 15 PLAYERS: just like the 2 player option, each player will fill out their own online SHEET OF INTEGRITY to make a “Prediction” as to how the overall Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION Tournament will play out. Depending on how many players there are, you can alternate match-ups for the head-to-head games against each other, pick, or assign initial seeds (using a similar methodology to the 16 Player game option), and the players who lose the games in the initial round(s), are re-seeded in the next round to play against the players who won in the previous round. Play out the tournament and determine a winner by who predicts the most accurate bracket outcome (using the same scoring system outlined above for the 2 Players set-up). If one player happens to “win-out” during the game-play (i.e. the player is a #1 Seed—as an example—and wins every game in each round straight on through the tournament to win the championship), the players could elect to play out a final game between the person who predicted the bracket outcomes most accurately against the person who won the game-play tournament, to determine an ULTIMATE BRACKETS BABY! CHAMPION. See 16 Players set-up for Sudden Death final game-play instructions.

For 16 PLAYERS: this is how the Brackets Baby! game was truly intended to be played! 16 players, each represented by a Seed Deck, playing head-to-head games until a Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION Champion is crowned.

To determine Seeds: take 1 “BOGEY+1” card from each of the 16 different Seed Decks and place all of the cards face-up on the game mat (so that only the “BOGEY+1” artwork is face up and the Seed # backs are face-down). Mix the 16 cards up on the game mat, so that no player can know which card has which Seed # on the back. Each player selects one card, and the Seed on the back of that card that the player selects is their assigned Seed for the tournament.

Once all seeds have been assigned, each player will fill out an online SHEET OF INTEGRITY prior to playing the games, to make their predictions of how the tournament will play out.

The 16 players will play out each game, via head-to-head game play, eliminating 1 seed/player with each game that is played, the winner moves on to the next round. Whichever player wins the tournament is the Brackets Baby! Champion. Whichever player most accurately predicts the outcome of the tournament with their SHEET OF INTEGRITY prediction is the co-champion . . . don't like the idea of two winners? Have the two co-champions play a sudden death game, using the #8 Seed Deck and #9 Seed Deck (again, using the “BOGEY+1” cards, face-up on the game mat to determine who is assigned which deck) in a head-to-head match-up to determine an ULTIMATE BRACKETS BABY! GOLF EDITION CHAMPION.

GAME PLAY: Each individual Game of the Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION Tournament consists of two sets of nine holes, in which the players shuffle their respective card decks, place 9 cards from their shuffled deck onto their assigned spots on the Front Nine (Holes 1-9) section of the Game Mat FACE-DOWN.

Front Nine: Each player has 9 holes to play head-to-head against each other via Match-Play format golf rules. Players alternate turns, by flipping one card face up at a time, to determine who wins each hole. The lowest score turned over for the individual hole determines who wins that hole. I.E. if Player 1 turns over a Par card (0), and Player 2 turns over a Bogey card (+1), then Payer 1 wins that hole. The scoring for Match-Play is hole-by-hole, respective to the cumulative outcome of wins/losses/ties vs. the # of holes played. So if Player 1 wins three holes, ties four holes (where both players draw a card of equal value to each other), and loses two holes, at the end of nine holes Player 1 would “Lead by 1 Hole, with 9 to play”. In that same scenario, Player 2 would be “Down by 1 Hole, with 9 to play”. At the end of Nine Holes, the players re-incorporate the flipped cards back into their respective Seed Decks and shuffle the cards all back together again.

Back Nine: The Back Nine of the game is played identically to the Front Nine: 9 cards are laid face down by each Player on the respective Back Nine card positions (Holes 10-18) on the Game Mat. Players alternate turns again as outlined in the Front Nine, with the overall score that was achieved through Nine Holes, carrying over to the start of the Back Nine. Again, the lowest score turned over by each player for the respective Hole in play wins that hole. If the # of holes left to play equals the same number as either player is leading/losing by, then the match is said to have gone “dormie”, where the leading player is more likely to win the match relative to the # of holes remaining (the greater # of holes remaining when a match is dormie increase the odds that the leading player will ultimately prevail). The two players should continue to play on however until the final outcome is confirmed. NOTE: once a player achieves a lead by # of Holes that exceeds the # of Holes remaining to be played, the match is then over. For example: if Player 2 leads by 5 Holes, with 4 Holes left to play, there is not a possibility for Player 1 to regain the lead within the 18 holes allotted; the match is over, with Player 2 winning.

Sudden Death: if after 18 Holes, the score remains tied, the players will re-gather the flipped cards into their respective Seed Decks and shuffle the deck again. Play will re-commence starting on Hole #1, where players will select the card from the top of their deck and place it face down on the respective places on Hole #1. Both players will flip the card over and whomever has the lowest score, wins the Hole and wins the Match. If the Hole ends in a tie, the players will repeat this process on Hole #2 (not re-shuffling the deck, just taking the next card off the top of the deck and placing it on the respective place on the Game Mat), and so on, until the first player to win a Hole decides the outcome of the Match.

The Player/Seed who loses the match is eliminated from the Match-Play tournament at that point (with the exception that the player will still be eligible to win with their SHEET OF INTEGRITY prediction remaining intact for the entirety of the tournament).

Brackets Logic: The game-play for the Brackets Baby! GOLF EDITION Tournament follows the same logic as most any 16-team/seed tournament format. Please refer to the online SHEET OF INTEGRITY (https://bracketsbaby.com/submit-predictions/) for the format of what teams play head-to-head against each other in the Round of 16, with the winners of each round advancing to play the winner of the team that is next in their assigned bracket (i.e. the winner of the #1 Seed vs. #16 Seed game goes on to face the winner of the #8 Seed vs. #9 Seed game, and so on).
